hi i went to my first DSA meeting last night and I think I will go to more meetings and events, they were saying things that were good and cool and had a basic Q&A and it was engaging, and i asked a question too my problem is that it seems like there's a way to reach democrats, based on what they discussed particularly neoliberals and I don't see any reconciliation if there is to be any transformative action towards progress, and i will probably bring that up next time to see what they think ok bye Lastgirl has issued a correction as of 13:42 on Nov 16, 2017 |

Lastgirl posted:hi i went to my first DSA meeting last night and I think I will go to more meetings and events, they were saying things that were good and cool and had a basic Q&A and it was engaging, and i asked a question too If by "democrats" you mean the party membership/voters as a whole, then yes, it's both possible and necessary to bring them over to our side if we're going to make any progress. Very few normal people are actually enthusiastic about the neoliberal status quo, which is one of the reasons the party is struggling with voter turnout during elections. If we bring a platform that can actually speak to the issues people struggle with in their daily lives, I think we can not only bring a lot of democrats over, but some republican voters as well. If by "democrats" you mean the current office holders and party leadership, probably not. They benefit from the system as it exists now, where everyone from unions to racial minorities to LGBT+ groups have no choice but to vote D, since the Republicans want to murder them all. Embracing any kind of socialist platform would anger their donor base and threaten whatever private sector gig they have lined up for once they're out of office, and those two things matter more to them than winning majorities or making positive social changes. We can run on their ticket and use their party apparatus to our own advantage as long as they let us, but we can't compromise our message to their satisfaction without giving up on the things we actually care about.

Business Gorillas posted:We're having this argument in my locals slack so I'm just gonna copy paste what I said there: I think you're exactly right that dems and reps band together when faced with a credible left threat. That is exactly why we need a separate and independent political force outside of the dems, however, to help illustrate all the more how both parties serve capitalism ultimately when their back is against the wall. The election in Minneapolis that Ginger Jentzen from SA lost is proof of this, where the republican party and its pacs were pouring tens of thousands of dollars into the democratic candidate's coffers to help him beat Ginger. The idea of cannibalizing or using the dems in the short term is one that many people have right now but I think it ignores the very real fact that the democratic party elites also have an agenda of their own and there is just as much a chance of them influencing socialist orgs that try to work within them as the opposite occurring. This is historically what has happened to other left wing and socialist movements who have taken this approach. That being said, while I disagree with the idea of infiltrating or repurposing the dems or even just using their ballot line, and feel that the disparate forces of the left need to come together to form a viable new labor, socialist, or workers party, I'll also concede that this is not an easy step and will take much time and effort. It's something that has to be built from the ground up with patience and genuine solidarity, and that takes time.

I know a couple folks out there (Gainesville, right?) that helped out with the Irma relief work we did, and they're good comrades. We're less than a week out from our first meeting here, where we should be able to fill out the paperwork to become an organizing committee. I'm pretty loving stoked. I'd like to have a state level organization that all the chapters can have delegates to and can be empowered to handle state level responses to things like hurricane relief in the future. There was some trouble with responding in reasonable time with Irma, because people needed to go back and forth between our group and their chapter membership so often to get approval for everything we wanted to do.

I know the "I will never read a book" caucus is dominant here, but I read a book (Discipline and Punish) and it was dope. Anyone have any good reading suggestions? I got Rousseau's Discourse on Inequality and the Communist Manifesto at a used book store for so those will probably be next, but I'm always looking to add more to my list.

Yandat posted:the democratic party is unique in that most countries their center left party formed out of labor struggles and trade union movements and are generally more democratically accountable to members. if you joined the democratic party you weren't being given a vote for head of the dnc in the perez vs ellison debate, only 447 members were voting members during that election The way labour leaders are elected was drastically changed during miliband's tenure so it doesn't really have anything to do with the party's history (The change was actually an attempt to weaken the left that ended up backfiring spectacularly)
