I think they're going to do the classic price anchoring technique: - Really lovely tiny outpost that will embarrass you in front of your peers: $100 - Regular player outpost that everyone will be expected to buy: $250 - Ridiculously expensive outpost to make the regular outpost seem cheap: $750 (Clifford will buy three)

This allows the UEE to later charge ground rent on your leasehold property (presumable based on mineral content, etc) in addition to property tax on the value of all improvements. And it also makes it unable to be subdivided, resold, or leased out to other players. An outright sale of the land via a deed would be problematic in this regard. Which ever way you look at it, it's just another big old chunk of technical debt. Only, it's not specified by the game, or the engine, it's specified by the player, the end user and where he plants his 'safe space stick'. CIG have just told the world, that they don't mind having griefers, they don't mind their playerbase being griefed and trolled in game, because they can potentially make money from players wanting to feel safe, they have literally just privatized and monetized GOONFEAR. The pvp slider is completely redundant, because if it were a thing then the 'safe space sticks' would be useless once the slider was set to 'pve' or 'nice people only' mode. YOU HEAR THAT B'TAK? No safe spaces or protection from griefing unless you throw notes at CIG, and they just made you their bitch.

Sure CIG is selling land claim stakes--but there will never, ever be any game mechanic to support actually using the stake to claim land. This is the same development house that removed the tutorial from the game because they couldn't get missles to work. The same bunch of coders that hasn't created ANY actual game mechanics.
