Hey I came in here to make this post. I'm really liking it and I haven't listened to much of her older stuff. I'm glad she's singing in French a lot because it makes for good work music when I can't understand the words.

Saw Cut Copy last night and I must say it was a bit of a let down. I brought along a friend who wasn't really familiar with them, so I had made a best-of playlist to get him up to speed....and they managed to basically play every song not on the list! :argh:

As expected they played quite a few tunes off Haiku from Zero, but for some reason skipped No Fixed Destination, the best drat song on the album!

hmmm. I was thinking about going to see them Friday, and the setlist from that show actually looks like exactly what I want, tbh. though the one song I would like to hear that's not on this is the best song on Zonoscope

the show's at noted worst-venue-in-New-York Terminal 5 but, I dunno, I've never seen Cut Copy live and I really liked this album way more than I thought I was gonna

St. Vincent was on Monday and she is not traveling with a full band. It's sort of a let down after the last tour. Basically her and her guitar playing over pre-recordings. I think she's broke maybe?

Mentally or financially, or both?

So glad I didn't buy tickets for this tour then, the one in 2014 was amazing.

Mostly financially? I know she alluded to some mental health issues in the most recent album. I was at her Q&A and she seemed like she enjoyed just connecting and talking with her fans this round.

She gave a great performance, but compared to the last tour it was not what I was expecting. She showed her short film as the opener, which was cool. I bet that might have sapped a lot of funds.

I am glad I am not the only one with the same sentiment with her new direction. The show felt very impersonal, like "here is my new forced image, ain't I different?". The crowd was loving dead here too and she did absolutely nothing to get it going, just stuck to her routine. It was a very big let down after her tour from three years ago for Digital Witness. She was able to re-brand herself while still connecting with everyone as well as put on a great show previously.

We're a week from December, is it time to start compiling end-of-year lists? I'm pretty boring, my top 3 is American Dream - Sleep Well Beast - Lotta Sea Lice, with the only non-major artists hitting my top 10 albums are Thundercat and Charly Bliss. I'm always stuck in this bubble where I keep tabs on new releases but struggle to branch out beyond mainstream indie stuff.

I'm still waiting on LCD in two weeks before I determine best show of the year, but I saw a lot of good poo poo. Jeff Rosenstock three times, Arcade Fire twice, Run The Jewels, Father John Misty, The National and Charly Bliss opening a show in January and headlining their own show in June.

Shows that were less good but still good included Tokyo Police Club, New Pornographers/ Waxahatchee and TV on the Radio.

Fleet Foxes, Alvvays, Day Wave, Protomartyr, Slowdive, Grizzly Bear, Drab Majesty, Jens Lekman, Waxahatchee, Washed Out.

Not sure of the order, but Fleet Foxes is still number one.

Best show was Future Islands release show, seeing Angel Olsen in two weeks to cap the year.

gently caress, I could count but I'd ballpark that I've been to around 25-30 concerts in 2017. I have another one tonight (Youngblood), Dear Rouge next week, and a Sofar show in December. Already have tickets for 6 shows Jan-Apr, I loving love it.

I'm not sure what my top show of 2017 was, but it's probably a tie between Frank Turner, USS, and Fast Romantics.

e: You know what it was probably Frank Turner, my god that was a good show. If you ever have the opportunity to see him live, do it without hesitation

Only big acts I saw this year were Wavves, QOTSA, and seeing Grizzly Bear. Everything else has just been local. I’m pretty pumped for GB just because it’s my first time at the new concert venue in St. Paul, The Palace.

Seven for beauty that blossoms and dies

My top (non-locals) concerts were Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and Julien Baker.

Best NZ artist I saw was easily Anthonie Tonnon. It was a neat venue (a museum) and a great set.

Pinning down top albums is gonna be a lot harder. Julien Baker, The Indelicates and Mt Eerie are all on the list, but it'll take a lot of thought to figure out the other best ones.

Of the stuff that didn't get a lot of talk in this thread, my favorites this year have included:

Sampha — "Process"

Blood on Me
Plastic 100C (can't find a good video for the album version, but it may be my favorite track of the year)

Moses Sumney — "Aromanticism"

Quarrel
Lonely World

Ásgeir — "Afterglow"

"Unbound"

This is a song about messin' with people who've been messin' with you
I have a Ticketmaster question and I'm not sure if there's a better place to ask it.

I'm interested in going to a sold-out show this weekend. Ticketmaster has a bunch of print-at-home resale tickets starting at $10 under face value. But the venue's website says that the only authorized online ticket seller is Etix. Normally I'd just assume the Ticketmaster tickets were scams, but Ticketmaster has some strong guarantee language wherever they talk about resale tickets. What's going on?

Tickets on Craigslist are listed at $10-15 over face value.

If the tickets were originally on sale on Ticketmaster and you're using their official reseller thing (I forget their actual brand name for it) then I'd say you're safe. I've done that a number of times in the past, it's as official as you can get it. If the tickets were NOT originally on sale on Ticketmaster, then that's weird it's possible to officially resell on Ticketmaster, not sure if I've experienced that before.

Either way, despite their fees, I've always had really good experiences with Ticketmaster customer service so worst case I still wouldn't worry tbh

I omitted the heavy hitters that have been discussed enough here (Fleet Foxes, Broken Social Scene, War on Drugs, etc.) and realized of the 10, "The Underside of Power" by Algiers was one hell of an outlier compared to the mood of the other stuff, so I left it out too :)

I saw Grizzly Bear on Friday and it was loving awesome. So much better than when I saw them in 2012. It was my first time at the venue and it was waaaaaaay too loud, which I blame on the venue.

But it had way more energy and heart behind it than when I saw them touring for Shields. Highly recommend seeing them and it would go very well w psychedelics. My only regret is the mushrooms that I took didn’t really work.

I'm divided on the Palace. I've seen 3 shows there. I enjoyed all of them but I also thought the sound was a little iffy at times. Hopefully this is just due to it being new and it will get better.

I also think something might be wrong with the pit setup, like they miscalculated the fire marshal numbers or it's just an awkward size/shape, because both times I've been down there it's been really unpleasant. A dude pushed hard on my back to get me out of the way, I reinforced my footing so I wouldn't fall, and he tries to start a fight with me for "spilling his drink". This was at a Wilco show :v:

I dunno if this is the thread for it but I wanna recommend Meet Me in the Bathroom: Rebirth and Rock and Roll in New York City 2001-2011 by Lizzy Goodman.

It's all about The Strokes, LCD Soundsystem, Interpol, and all those great bands that started out in the early 2000s, as well as how Indie Rock/Pop/Electronic grew as a genre in those times. One of those "perfect storm" scenarios and it was a super-duper interesting read. If you hate Ryan Adams, like me, then it's a perfect read because that guy eats it hard during various interviews.
