My pet theory is that RSI licensed the engine on a long-term contract, possibly rolling renewal-until-specified. One of the IP specialists may be able to describe this with more certainty than I. Some courts will consider a long-term license to be virtually owning something (because you might as well, for most intents and purposes), so they'll treat the licence as a property right.

Someone explained that to Roberts and Co and he went "ding! - I am a big important Space Game Director and clearly this means I own it! I have bought CryEngine".

The rest was just however many years of Chris shouting down anyone who opened their mouth in meetings. Every time Toast tried to bring it up, he got told to shut up and go make the TOS more ironclad.

Amazon bought full non-exclusive rights to the engine for, I've heard, between $50-72 million. It should be clear to anyone CIG didn't give CryTek $50+ million.

Well that verifies the rumour I heard from developers in the UK who are friends of a friend and how CIG/RSI fumbled refactoring for Lumberyard and were struggling to switch over to the new engine with some teams using Lumberyard and some still on Cryengine. Now, given their talk about a big Squadron 42 update coming out I’m curious if the other rumour I heard is true (they screwed up the mocap recording and all of the footage is useless).

For the armchair lawyers playing at home, which I am one of, regardless of them having the same original code base, CryEngine and Lumberyard are legally completely different engines.

The interesting thing here is the switching between two engines which are, code wise, identical (ignoring Lumberyard's modifications). I think this would be less of a mess if they switched from CryEngine to Unity, or Unreal, as that would be a great deal of work. They'd still be on the hook for the engine exclusivity, but there'd be a great deal of effort in the technical aspects of the engine switch.

It'd be like if you licensed Hershey's chocolate recipe, then jumped to someone else who had licensed a more liberal usage of the recipe and gave it away for free. You don't have to change your recipe at all, you only have to put a different logo on the wrapper.

It's shady as poo poo, and makes me wonder if an injunction against using CryEngine did ever come through, if it would also include a prohibition of the use of CryEngine derivatives.

On a serious note, SC backers can be forgiven for getting too used to CIG's new and exciting paradigm where you not only fund the company, but also send them food, do their QA, file bug reports, and occasionally provide full on development support with fixes and suggestions, all for free.

Some companies, unfortunately, still live in the past where you don't send out half-finished messy pieces of poo poo and expect the community to clean it up for you.

One thing to consider is that Lumberyard comes with a _lot_ of tight integrations. Like Gamelift. Which appears to be mandatory. Which means their netcode was always going to be amazon.

That will largely depend on the judgement or settlement terms. Depending on how big of an rear end CryTek wants to be about it. It very well could end up that CIG would not be allowed to use any of the modifications they did for Cry Engine. That even if they started out with a clean install of Lumberyard they'd have to start from scratch as any code they developed under the Cry Engine license and tried to copy over could be infringement.

So, I just heard something about the Star Citizen stuff at the 2014 Aus PAX. I can't verify this but I have no reason to assume it's based on lies. What was interesting is I don't think this has been ever mentioned there.

A friend of a friend had a pre-order pack which got him into the reveal of the FPS module, some kind of VIP exclusive event for certain backers.

Roberts gets up on stage and does the presentation and talks the talk about how great it is and so on and then a "lady space pirate" came up on stage and "took him hostage" in some kind of roleplay skit.

Then Squadron 42 stormed the stage and rescues Roberts, arrested the space pirate lady and put her in cuffs. Hooray, pirates have been stopped, all hail Squadron 42!

Then Roberts addresses the crowd. "What should we do with her?" he calls.

The crowd shouts in reply.

"STRIP OFF HER CLOTHES!"

Friend says he left soon after.

You’ve got to be lying or have been lied to. I know they are scum balls and probably did tinker with professional porn stuff, but I can’t imagine this happening in a video game unveiling event.

It wouldn't be Amazon, it would be any code that CIG produced specifically for CryEngine that was supposed to be passed back up the line to CryTek as per their agreement. CryTek, as part of the injunction, could specific that any such code could not be reused in another engine even if it was compatible. Again depends on how big a dick CryTek wants to be and if they can convince a judge/jury of it.
