Players should be paid for actual performance. Do it like scoring in fantasy baseball. Get a hit? $10k. Hit a homerun? $50k. Pitcher gets a strikeout? $25k. There, now players are getting paid for their performance and teams can base their budgets around how they expect the player will perform.

And the player has to pay money for TOOTBLANs and errors.

I'm also in favor of removing batting orders entirely and replacing them with a Plinko board to decide who gets to hit.

On one hand gently caress the owners, but I also don't get the treatment that MLB players are just another Average Joe barely making ends meat (for minor leagues players, I have no doubt the typical salary is poo poo and it's a rough life).

I work with a lot of contractor craft staff, and while they're angry, racist Trump-loving assholes typically, they're average salary is probably a little more than 1/10th of your average MLB veteran's minimum salary, and the chance of injury/death is higher on a construction site than an MLB player. So MLB players are hardly downtrodden individuals whose lives could come crashing down at any moment...

The only reason the atrocious deals really matter is the luxury tax, though.

It’s more like the luxury tax is why some of the deals are so atrocious. Back-ended, spread out over more years, etc.

Put a limit on the number of years and not on money per year and watch the average pay go up. Not saying it has to be every year like the Finley proposal.

Backloading doesn't matter, they're all calculated by AAV. Point is, the luxury tax leads to bad deals one way or another.

Taking money out of the players pockets doesn't increase the money in Joe Blow's, it makes men who are already billionaires even richer by virtue of simply owning the team while costing the men who are the actual product, who are uniquely talented and work their asses off for years and years. Who cares what someone in another industry makes? It's about how much money the job generates that should dictate the salary

I sure love how the easiest way to make money is to have money already

I'd be interested. Indians should place a call, our catchers are kinda awful. Although Meija is probably gonna be a main roster guy next year, but we could move him to 1B.

Speaking of the Tribe, we signed Mel Upton Jr. to MLC, not a bad move at all.

I dispense wisdom by the gallon.
Sometimes I wonder if we watch the same team.

Gomes and Perez are below average bats right now, sure. (OPS+ of 83 and 72 in 2017, respectively). However, they also threw out 42% and 43% of attempted steals, when the average is about 27%. They're both regarded as decent defensive catchers, and they have a good rapport with the rotation. That kind of value is difficult to quantify, but without them I don't think the Indians have one of the best rotations in baseball.

Crosstown games (and any rivalry that travels well) are always a ton of fun as long as you're willing to really dive into the city and fanbase with public transportation, local bars, hanging out before and after, and talking to strangers. And as long as you know how to spot a fight before it breaks out and get your distance.
