I guess that is what Star Citizen has become to them: Obsess over JPEGs, obsess over funding it more, obsess over yelling at derek. What did these poor people do to deserve this fate?

Star Citizen is everywhere. It is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You can see it's fidelity when you look out your window or when you watch youtube

Now, 25 years later, he's making the most ambitious game ever conceived.

A balanced discussion of Star Citizen of say 4 people, would have all 4 thinking it's cool in 2013, 1 questioning it and 3 backing it in 2014, 2 vs. 2 in 2015, 1 backer and 3 skeptics, in 2016, and 4 people knowing damned well it's bullshit in 2017. That's what balance is - a proportional reflection of reality, not a constant reassertion of people's egos and the reinforcement of the belief that "all opinions are equally valid."

This was happening a year ago too. The only thing that was moving then was converting your ships into in-house currency and then selling that off at a 15% or so discount.

Nobody wants to buy the ships because they're ludicrously overpriced, and all of the risk is on the buyer. The seller could rip you off for the cash and then have you kicked out of the community if you are a new buyer with no history. Or they could sell the account, then claim they were hacked and reclaim the merchandise later. Or they could sell and then refund and who knows what happens then? Or, if it's a really big sale, like multiple thousands, they will probably demand that both sides go through a middleman with a good rep but then who is establishing that rep in the first place? It's just risk, risk, risk. Anybody who'd spend 700 bucks for a digital spaceship will probably spend 800 for one straight from the store that can be resold.

Nobody (sane) wants to sell the ships because if they bought them from the store originally, they can just refund and get their money back. The hot market and limited supply that raised prices above store level no longer exists, the constant sales and slipshod release cycle have killed it completely, so nobody's buying just to sell at a markup anymore. The only people trying to offload on the grey market are the ones who bought their ships on the grey market in the first place- they can't claim refunds for gifts so they're left with nothing unless they can dump to some other sucker. Hence the deep price discounts.

Literally the only ships I can see moving on the grey market are the capships that can't be purchased anymore, and that's pretty much just the Idris M, and two years ago those were going for $5,000 dollars. Nobody's gonna pay that now, and I'd bet that the people who own one these days are praying for some kind of miracle to come along and save their investment.

There's... Uh. Like four kinds of currency.

There's cash from a real world government. Sometimes they only let you buy new ships with this. Like pesos. Since SC isn't a drug or child porn bitcoin isn't in yet.
There's store credit. You can use this for things they're not demanding real world money for and now it's less valuable. CIG hates this and wishes it was gone.
There's UEC. Which is the game currency. You can use this to buy a $16 gun that may or may not work. CIG loves this because it's double pretend.
There's REC. Which is used to temporarily rent things in specific contexts. It vanishes after a period of time. This is how future real world governments will work.

There's also street cred but I don't know how to get it or spend it.
There's also credibility but CIG ran out back in 2013.

There's also CCUs. Which aren't a currency per se but more like a call option or jpeg futures.

No, you are wrong, at no stage was Star Citizen cool.

The very start of the project was Chris Roberts pitch video.

Are you saying that you thought what Chris was saying was cool?

It was failed games developer Chris Roberts from the very start of this - and many people here bought into his bullshit.

It is those people who are to blame for this even thought many of them are now the hardest critics. (Derek backed this to the turn of like 5 AAA games .... all while it was just an Chris Roberts brain fart)

For those who say "anyone who back this after XXX" are fooling themselves; if you have ever back this, you are somewhat to blame.

That is the truth that get forgotten around here.

It was Chris "I was failing at gaming so left to try Hollywood, which I got blacklisted from, so I'm now back to make the best game ever, but no publisher will have anything to do with me, after not releasing a product for over a decade" Roberts from the very start.

Now, aside from the Abuminable, business goes on as usual.
Here we have a Reclaimer with LTI that the original buyer paid £345 just for the CCU from an Origin X1. The CCU'ed ship was put up for sale at £250, but the seller had to drop the price to £200 before he got a buyer! Nearly 50% loss! The grey market is going great.
