I'm not familiar with Kerbal Space Program, but isn't the point of the game is to try and emulate space travel and space shuttle construction as accurately as possible? Why make a mod like that? It's not even a, "It's difficult so as to be more realistic" argument, it just sounds like it's making the game more difficult arbitrarily.

I think he just thought they're boring and not cool

I mean they are kind of, it's just calculating orbital energy differences between your start and end, timing your launch, then real quick burning enough fuel to give your ship whatever the energy difference is. At that point you just wait and hope that the bafflingly improbable but still possible space rock collision doesn't happen.

e: To clarify they are actually quite cool and I still like them as a concept but I had to calculate a lot of them in different classes

I imagine it's probably a case of "I don't like this because it doesn't require any strategy, you just do it and it works". Which is not necessarily true, but compared to some of the wild poo poo you can pull in that game a realistic maneuver done by real spacecraft is pretty plain jane.

The actual best mod(ding) is the modding still being done on Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, because that engine is one of the most unstable pieces of poo poo in the industry, and in fact has it's inventory (and a LOT of other stuff) hard-coded. People are making entire new areas for a game where you can never add a new inventory item ever. It's sheer, unrelenting madness. But at least it's not toxic and garbage madness.

A lot of the drama for the game's mod community went away a while ago when the competition for the fan patch died when the one guy bitched out which left just Wesp, the strange German guy who obsessively mods the game as a hobby.

No one really knows what the gently caress he's doing but he just sort of quietly does whatever it is and is apparently happy doing it.

A group of modders including Wesp (indeed I think they're like, all German?) are literally trying to add an entirely new hub area and prelude storyline where you play as a different character.

In this game where you, again, cannot add items. At all. You can only ever modify and change the ones already in game. I have to imagine multiple other things in this engine are equally absurdedly hardcoded.

I have no idea how this is going to work.

Heck, there's even a team making a prelude mod that lets you play as a hunter and let's you flesh out what was going on before the game started. It includes all new areas, skills, characters, and everything.

There's also the Antribu mod, which is literally nothing but new clans that people were interested in like the Tzimisce, Nagaraja, etc, etc each with their own unique mechanics and drawbacks. Though it turned out that the creator was a bit nuts it did come out in a somewhat playable state.

quote:

No one really knows what the gently caress he's doing but he just sort of quietly does whatever it is and is apparently happy doing it.

Apparently he's one of the people on the prelude mod team. So mostly that when he's not working on the community patch. Which is basically what his patch is at this point.

Also, they can definitely add new things in. My best guess at how is that someone somehow decompiled or obtained access to the source code at some point in the past and just aren't telling people outside of the long time modder community. Because at this point many of the long time modders are adding stuff they literally could not add in before, like new characters, items, entire new playable clans with their own mechanics, etc, etc.

Edit: Beaten. :argh:

Well, bear in mind that it was built on the Source engine, a really EARLY version of the Source engine. There probably wasn't even a framework for any kind of RPG inventory. It's the same problem they ran into with Mass Effect Andromeda and Frostbite; they're engines built specifically for FPSes. Anything you didn't see in Half-Life 2 probably had to be hacked in to Bloodlines.

iirc Pokemon Red/Green had all its text hardcoded and localising those games meant having to rewrite the whole thing from scratch.

2004 was well after modding was a widespread thing. Team Fortress came out in 1996, Counter Strike in 1999. Heck, Morrowind was 2002, and that included modding tools.

Well Red and Green also had worse graphics, lower quality sound, and even more bugs in general. They needed a lot of work done regardless and probably should have gotten that before being published... but who knew it'd become one of the most popular media franchises of all time and get the sort of attention it receives?

That said Red and Blue are absolutely not games rewritten from scratch compared to Red and Green. Most of the original logic and engine is still there, just improved.

Turns out that A: his Mage was weak because he refused to change out of this mid range leveling armour set for casters that looks like lingerie on women, and B: a moderator revealed that drat near ALL of the people supporting his side were sock puppet characters registered to his account.

In Awesome Mod news, some time ago the CFO of EA, Blake Jorgensen, said that the decision to include only useful stuff in Battlefront II's lootboxes (as opposed to cosmetics) was dictated by commitment to "realism" and not touching the canon. To quote:

quote:

If you did a bunch of cosmetic things, you might start to violate the canon, right? Darth Vader in white probably doesn't make sense, versus in black. Not to mention you probably don't want Darth Vader in pink. No offense to pink, but I don't think that's right in the canon.

Well it seems that you can kinda mod Battlefront II. So lo and behold: The "Darth Vader in Pink" mod for Battlefront II.

The lengths modders will go to spite some people is amazing as usual :allears:

EDIT: Even more amazing, you can also replace Kylo Ren with "Matt the Radar Technician" from that one SNL skit about Undercover Boss.
