Does someone have a link to that odd translation that replaced all character and place names with clunky western ones like "Beauregard Washington"?

The teaser doesn't really tell us anything other than the setting and lord knows Total War has definitely made lovely games in potentially awesome settings. I'll still buy it but if they're released closely to each other there won't even be a competition between choosing one or the other. Having consumed RotK in many forms, I think one of its most accessible forms is the manga adaption Sangokushi from 1971. Its art style is dated, but in a charming way. Here's a sample:

Meh. As someone who has spent a year in China and has made a serious effort to learn Mandarin, I've learned to take the pronunciation issue in stride. My tones are always wrong anyways, so its not like I'm doing it right either. Now Wade-Giles, on the other hand, bugs the hell out of me.

Playing some Shogun 2 again. Someone remind me, can I recruit generals in this one or do I solely gain them from family members and events?

Family members and events only, although you have a really high chance of getting one if you win a fight with a regular unit as the general of the stack. Remember that recruiting more generals will make your other generals less loyal. The game also weights the liklihood of those events firing based on how many generals you already have, so if you only have 1 or 2 it's pretty quick and easy to get another.

I had no idea this was a cult thing, I thought it was just another scenario. Looks like it might be less fun if you're not already a fan of the thing, I never gave Warhammer a second look for instance. But I'm looking forward to the Alfred thing.

Yeah, I figured out as much a little after I posted. I'm really feeling the improvements to campaign and battle AI since Shogun 2 though (particularly the ones in the Warhammer games), which is a shame. Particularly campaign AI where the AI finds it far too easy to split up their armies and go marching all around the map rather than maintain a strong presence to defend their territory. Far less large battles in general. Which is a shame because the underlying game is still good and really flavorful. Also a shame that there's no immortality or atleast ability to get wounded a number of times rather than outright dying for important characters, especially as AI carelessness with its general combined with the general lethality of combat means that any battle you fight will usually result in their general dying. Game still looks great too (though there's some weird distortion effect from the weather or something going on there which became a lot more apparent in the screenshot than ingame). Love those ashigaru uniforms. e: Speaking of the AI, does Darthmod actually improve the AI as it claims to do? And in what ways? Randarkman fucked around with this message at 10:09 on Jan 12, 2018 |

Yeah I agree we don't know much of anything about either game aside from the setting. It could turn out that Three Kingdoms is an Empire/Rome 2 at release mess and Brittania is Shogun 2 level of perfect or other way around or both could be great or both could suck. It's always best to assume any Total War title will be poo poo until it actually releases and then be pleasantly surprised if it isn't.

DKD posted:Robert Moss' seems to be the best translation, but it can still be quite a task. Everyone has at last two names, and the one they use most is not the one you know from Dynasty Warriors - he's Kongming or Master Sleeping Dragon, not Zhuge Liang; Zhao Yun is usually Zhao Zilong; and the three brothers are often (but not always) called Xuande, Yunchang, and Yide, instead of Liu Bei, Guan Yu (or Lord Guan), and Zhang Fei. I enjoyed reading it (though it was the abridged version), but do keep a cheat sheet handy. I've played about 15 minutes of Dynasty Warriors, so I am not attached to the more popular names and, well, I got through Crime & Punishment, I can handle the dual names. Thanks, I'll be hunting that down!

China is and almost always has been saturated by Three Kingdoms in its popular culture, from plays to operas to novels (the original novel was keying off popular stories already common at the time) to songs to common sayings, some of which are still used today. Yeah, Koei hit on a good thing with their games and portrayals, but they wouldn't have been able to get away with making thirteen iterations of the same drat game if they weren't tapping into a market hungry for all things RTK all the time.

Do "welcome to erf" and "shamefur dispray" really have racist connotations? I mentally have them in the same category of Game of Thrones' "king in da norf" and "Luke, I am your father" or "beam me up, Scotty", none of which are really accurate to what the actors really said but that is just how the meme became popular.

For a while I thought it was "welcome to Earf" because I hadn't seen the movie in years and misremembered Will Smith saying it with a giant cigar in his mouth. Turns out I was confusing that with the much better line that comes a few moments later..

The steam page cites 190 CE. That's after the start of the Yellow Turban stuff (184 CE) but before the three big boys are all fully established (222 CE ish). The trailer shows events from 190 CE where the warlords gathered to (fail to) defeat Dong Zhuo before falling out with each other, and there's a couple more years before the real infighting between them starts which makes it an excellent starting point. The end of the period is about 280 CE, so the guess about one turn per season could be about right - endurance games tend to have a soft limit of 350-400 turns in the current CA designs - but I could also see it being broken down into just summer / winter as few players get beyond 150-200 turns without winning or getting bored. About 60-120 turns for the main blocs to form also seems approximately correct, and matches the Chaos events in WH1 in terms of timing. The tutorial campaign could be Yellow Turbans but is more likely to be the Alliance to Depose Dong Zhuo so they can gently caress around with Lu Bu in a scripted mission based on the trailer, assuming they go back to those instead of the Warhammer style introductory advice and obivious enemy stuff. Hopefully it's still a good Total War game, maybe with literal tiger riding cavalry, machinegun crossbows, and Zhang Liao literally cutting his way back and forth through entire armies several times in a single battle like a wind of death spell (and most of the players wondering who the gently caress he is). Also lots of falling rocks and dams to break and cause flooding, things being set on fire, and dudes holding up entire armies at passes and bridges on their own. But we'll probably get something equivalent to how Sengoku sits in Paradox's history, and the Koei games will remain the gold standard for the period. The Koei games actually do the heroes in battle thing really well - the heroes affect the stats of the units they lead a little (or a lot in some iterations), but are made important by having unique abilities like starting fires, and can outright duel one another to deal massive damage to the entire enemy unit if they win. I think one of the older Warhammer Fantasy video games had something similar that could be cribbed, and allowing units to be attached to other units would be a nice piece of tech for CA to properly figure out at last.

I pretty much agree with what you say, but to give more context to where the Grand Campaign begins, I think it'll be just after the coalition dissolves and all of the petty shits are in their own power blocs. Dong Zhuo features prominently in that trailer, so I bet his death and the Emperor's flight from the capital are going to be events. Really hoping they make control of the Emperor important, and managing where your capital is as well. I don't think I've ever moved capitals outside of maybe late game Medieval 2 or Rome. Also give us cool rear end mounted duels CA, I want to see people jousting and riding side by side exchanging blows through raging battlefields, that'd be visually exciting and 100% true to the setting.
