The Go! Team has a new album coming out on Friday, but you can stream the whole thing here: https://www.npr.org/2018/01/11/576551888/first-listen-the-go-team-semicircle It's no Thunder, Lightning, Strike, that's for sure. Like it's not terrible either, it's just not invigorating to me in the way that TLS still is 14 years after I first heard it.

So I'm Russian and early last year I decided to get back into Russian music, mostly because not being well versed in your own culture and only consuming foreign media is mildly embarrassing. So I did and spent way too much time listening to too many of that year's releases and it turned out in the last few years Russian music has become pretty good, which is something that definitely wasn't as true, let's say, ten years ago. Then I decided hey, how about I create a playlist to post every time someone asks me to recommend them some Russian music. (It does happen, okay?!) I've briefly considered maybe making a separate thread here in NMD, but I doubt anyone would really give enough gently caress about foreign music for it to be worth the effort. However, since I mostly populated the playlist with the poo poo I enjoy and I enjoy, let's say, dark or minor-key electronica influenced altrock and indie poo poo (with some folk and hiphop of similar flavor) I felt it would be a decent people for at least some people who post in this thread, so I decided to just share it here. This is the playlist on Spotify and this is the playlist on Youtube in case you don't use Spotify. The playlists mostly duplicate one another, but not everything is available on both platforms, so there are minor differences. Every track here is a track I personally dug, so I didn't include anything that was critically acclaimed or popular but I didn't enjoy. For example, this has also been a big year for Russian punk and post-punk and whatever-punk, apparently, but I bounce right off that poo poo, so I haven't retained any band names to recommend. (Another big trend I noticed for some reason was dudes doing really pretentious spoken word over electronica and for gently caress's sake learn to sing or rap or hand-fart or something, you twats.) So yeah, anyway. Hope you enjoy any of it. Have a nice day.

Like in that set I posted, she's on the ground playing synths and doing everything herself and just watching her play everything herself is mystifying to me. And when I saw her on the Art Angels tour, she put on such a loving good show. She had broken her leg I think and was in this cast, but she was still flying around stage dancing and playing all these instruments and...she just puts a whole lot of loving energy into everything she does

Neko Case has an album coming out this year. She played some of it live (amid a show where she played close to 30 songs). It sounds really good.

This post made me wonder if any of those hip college radio kids give any fucks of about buzzword bands like aforementioned The Go! Team or any of the others that seem a bit forgotten now from them being relevant when I was there 8 years ago. Something tells me many of them could recognize names of that last generation of indie stuff but mostly would have never actually cared to listen to much of it.

On a somewhat related note, I just saw an hour or so ago that Built to Spill announced a show here in May, and...I'm not sure if I care anymore? Like they're one of my all-time favorite bands, don't get me wrong. I've seen them like 4 times. It's just that the last couple times I've seen them were kinda samey and not particularly standout. They didn't have that same energy as when I first saw them in like 2009 and they closed their set with like a 15 minute long improv jam version of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCCX-E8VMJw And even seeing them for the first time in 2009, I'm sure I was already seeing them way past their heyday of live shows. I've got a great weekend of shows lined up. First is Shenandoah Davis tomorrow - I get to skip work and (hopefully, if it doesn't rain) relax in the sun to an artist I've looked forward to seeing for years. Then on Friday I get to see Mount Eerie play in a cinema buried three stories underneath a library and cry. A lot. And finally on Tuesday I'm going to see Anthonie Tonnon who cptn_dr already made a Good Post about but you should check him out again because he's really, really great. I'm always surprised whenever somebody like Mount Eerie comes to New Zealand. He's playing one show at a tiny venue that can fit maybe 200 people and tickets were pretty cheap too.

I've got nothing but love for BtS' albums, but yeah, had pretty much the same experience seeing them ~2013. They had a legit tour bus parked outside, which surprised me. That was a bad year for shows. I also went to one billed as "Xiu Xiu" but it was just Jamie shooting dart guns at cymbals and screaming.
