So today I got a job I don't actually want, and I'm not sure what to do.

I've been applying to several different places, trying to do what I did in FL, commercial HVAC/R work, and today I had an interview at a residential company.
Went to the interview, took their skills test, asked some questions and normal interview stuff, and they ended up hiring me on the spot. And then they're like, your first day is tomorrow. I really wasn't expecting that. Like, at all. At most I figured they'd need a few days to review other people and stuff. But the thing is, I have no interest in doing residential stuff. I don't want to deal with people, or crawl in attics, crawl spaces, etc... There's just nothing I like about it. But on the other hand, I haven't really heard much from other companies, and they did offer a pretty great salary.

I want to get back to work, and soon, but it seems like it'd be kinda awkward to be there for a few days and then be like peace out if a proper commercial company hires me.

Yo they would gently caress you over if the situation was reversed so it is your CAPITALISTIC DUTY to return the favor. Work as long as you want then stop.

I've learned the hard way that companies are not going to be loyal to you, their employee, so you have to do what is best for you, because the employers will not.

As has been said, go in, do the best job you can so that if you quit in two weeks you can look at the check they cut and honestly say that you gave them a good value and fair work for that check, and you then should have no problem looking yourself in the mirror and not feeling guilty about doing what you need to do for your own good.

PUBG is extremely good if you play it in first person/fpp with a few guys you know - I've been playing it with some old core friends and it's fantastic. Only game to ever give me actual sweaty-palm adrenaline rushes. Winning a round actually feels like an achievement. This damned game pulled back my old gaming buddies who have four kids and haven't been online in years. It really rewards teamwork and communication, so if you can get some friends together it's a great time.

BF:1 suffers from typical battlefield server-setting balance issues, but if you can find a good hardcore server that chokes vehicle spawns it's really fun. Fantastic graphics if you've got a ~modernish system. Play the medic/marksman single-shot rifles and go 30-2 with pubbies screeching about hacks.

Rainbow Six: Siege is probably what you want. The dev team updates it constantly and it's twitchy enough to give you a real edge if you play it enough. I'm a diehard old Redstorm/Tom Clancy fan and the game is a really good mix of R6 corner/pie-cutting gunwork and modern player-specialty stuff. I get schooled a lot by teenagers but meh. So yesterday kinda sucked, in terms of traffic. We had a cop get killed in the line of duty in a suburb last week. His funeral was yesterday.

They shut down a major highway (US-75) from I-635 to SH-190 for the procession. It was one hell of a sight, fire trucks at several overpasses with ladders raised, even tow trucks at one overpass with an American flag, and what had to be close to 100 police cars leaving the church where the services were with their lights on with a little bit of fog.

Our local drive time talk radio show (The Russ Martin Show) is a big supporter of first responders. They had someone call in; I haven't been able to verify this myself, but it sounded pretty AI (Russ Martin is a bit of a car guy anyway). A caller claimed to be a cop that was at the church service, and said the officer's body would not be in a typical hearse. He was supposedly transported via motorcycle side car from the church to the burial site. :911:

But... it seriously hosed traffic, and I was on a quad (as in 4 orders on me) at the time. :sigh: I can't get too upset. I have a hell of a lot of respect for all first responders, and DFW still remembers the attack against cops a year and a half ago - lots of "back the blue" and black/white flag stickers with a blue line on cars. A friend/coworker had a rant about it while we were BSing on Voxer, and part of me wanted to slap the poo poo out of him.

I'm very much a liberal, but I respect the hell out of first responders and military (which apparently doesn't go that well with "liberal" according to my family?). They're doing the jobs that I don't have the balls to do.

She works big box retail, in the "secure" cash office, so she won't really be able to get anything delivered. She's also 3 hours away, otherwise I'd just show up in person with said flowers/balloon.

Also I have $20 to last me until I get paid tomorrow, I'm gonna need that money for food and fuel. She's a lot better at the whole "adulting with money" thing than I am - enough that she'd likely get angry with me for dropping that kind of money on her.

This sounds terrible, but she's also my escape plan - I've been wanting to move to the Austin area for years. We've known each other since 1993 or so, and went to high school together, we both migrated away from "home". I'm sick of DFW, and I can transfer all 3 jobs down there

That's always possible. When the 1SG from my unit retired from the army he became a "traveling construction foreman" for a company that would bounce from big job to big job, all the way up to Alaska, and down to Florida. He bought a retrofitted vandweller short schoolbus from a traveling nurse that decided to settle down. Bus had solar water heaters, composting toilet, bed, etc. Essentially lived on the construction sites for a few years and saved money, same as the nurse prior to him did with the bus at various hospitals.

We're 100% agreement on this, I just couldn't articulate it the way you did.

I used to have a "gently caress the cops" mentality until I became friends with a few cops. I don't agree with a lot of the poo poo they have to do, but I respect the hell out of them (and thanks to many interactions with them, along with stuff various people like nm have posted over the years, I know the place to argue a ticket is not the side of the road, unless you like to find out what a taser feels like). Out of all the cops I've been friends with, none of them agree 100% with the laws they're enforcing, but they can't look the other way on a lot of stuff, particularly since body cams have started rolling out.

I absolutely support the good guys (also did you know that not only was "The Good Guys" was based and filmed right here in Dallas, they also used a friend's apartment for about 2 seconds in one episode? it was so weird seeing so many places I frequent shown in that series in general, too bad it just wasn't a good show overall). Days like today I really wish I could code, because goddamn I could fix some simple rear end issues.

One department uses a timesheet that populates an access database. The issue is the guy that created it 18 months ago is no longer here, and he created it as a .xsn file. Which means as soon as the systems updated to office 16, we lost functionality for that format.

So now time sheets are having to be emailed, and the data entered manually into the database, until I can find a better solution.

gently caress.

You can do it! Or get a consultant...
