If the Leafs were gung-ho on re-signing McDonagh and think their defense is a bigger need than their offense, which would be accurate, it wouldn't be irrational for them to send either Nylander or Marner back to the Rangers, considering they're definitely not going to be able to sign all three when their contracts run out at the same time.

If they won't be able to get Matthews, Marner and Nylander all signed they should trade Nylander. As much as I love the guy, they're not trading Matthews and Marner is better and more valuable imo.
