Ah, it had been such a great load off of Kalpernicus' back, knowing that the prized possessions that had been stolen from him by his thrice-damned chrono-clone would finally be returned, more-or-less intact. As Kalpernicus watched Scramble dig through Kal Risso's finely-charred remains, he raised a glittering glass of gold-infused intoxihol to his lips and started swigging the fizzy mineral spirits in celebration. In total, there was the Medi-Kit (X), the Hazmat Suit, the DPM Rifle and the Optiscope (X) - those particular items Scramble could keep or sell off as she desired. Kalpernicus was a Rig-Ripper man after all, so the gun held no special attachments for him. It was the Squidpack that Kal wanted back - that thing was all that Kalpernicus had originally started with when he joined the Wrecking Crew games in Salt, and for that reason alone the all-purpose escape backpack had held a special sentimental value to the ex-Wrecker. That and his Comms Tablet, of course - Kal had been certain to put a bounty out on it, and-

Kal sputtered and sprayed gold-flecked drink across his console's holo-screen when he saw what Scramble dusted off from the scattered ashes of Kal Risso's body. What-?! When had Kal Risso picked up a QED Terminal? Furthermore, where was the missing Comms Tablet?

He was wiping his holo-screen dry when he saw it. Oh, right. The Comms Tablet had been sitting right there on the console desk, just behind the holoscreen's monitors. Of course. He'd put it there hours, maybe days ago. It's strange how things like that can slip the mind.

Kal Risso hopped on his Sponsor-enabled Comms Tablet to check on his Sponsor Challenges, blithely unaware of the seamless timeslip he'd just passed through. Time to delete one entry and adjust another.

Interstellar Patriotische Cybernétiques
Carrying the fire of Revolution since the Neolithic

IPC would like to congratulate Wrecker Midge on their courage in the field of scientific advances, this is the kind of spirit required for truly revolutionary advances.
As a reward we are going to send you an experimental medkit filled with Nanites that should will repair radiation damage to your cellular structure.
In addition, we are also sending you an experimental Coffin Nail from our King-Killer series, the CFN-Guillotine 0.5. With its pinpoint precision it is going to topple even the most oppressive king of the battlefield, so use it in good health against Capricorn.
Send a delivery drone to Midge containing an experimental Medkit and an experimental Coffin Nail that deals bonus damage to mid and final bosses using 33 Luxe from Midge's account

To further incentivise experimentation we are also issuing a new persistent challenge:
- Use the QED Terminal within one turn of picking it up
We hope that every Wrecker will participate in the advancement of science!

Mar 31, 2007

Mirko watched the replay of the QED terminal activation again. He'd been watching it on repeat for half an hour, on multiple screens, multiple angles, in slow motion at both the activation and arrival point. A dozen or more scientists and engineers were crowded around the displays.

What had happened was... unexpected. Not that he was really sure what they had expected to happen, but this was still unexpected. He grabbed his sponsor tablet and keyed in a quick challenge:

quote:

  • Use the ▌▃'▓'▇'▍▉'▐'▊▅'▂'▇ .

"I'm incentivizing the use of that... whatever that is. It looks like good publicity, is what it looks like." Mirko was pleased, and in a good mood. Almost immediately afterward he was on the holocom with purchasing, "Get me a pallet full of coffin nails, yesterday!" he turned to face the collection of R&D staff around him, "Find out if this is reproducible, right away. If we can bring that thing to market, holy hell..." He trailed off, his mind lost in the insane carnage and a never-ending torrent of luxe falling from the skies into his accounts.

She casually sliced some important cables and tubes, spilling oil and hydraulic fluid down the back of the rig, before hopping down to where Bobby-Jack was crouched.

Standing in the open, ignoring the slowly sizing rig behind her- "the distraction worked, good job! I'm pretty sure that camera drone got a good angle on you chasing it too, it should work as a looping holo, you know like you forever chasing it and it reversing awkwardly, for~ever. This was dangerous, exceedingly so: Methmaws were no joke at the best of times. He could lose the hard won Gunman or even his life, if he misjudged things and let it get a bite in. But the Church looked kindly upon the brave and the swole, so here he went.

His Beta Gunman leapt from its well-chosen position at his command, trying to secure a place on the methane wurm's back, behind the vicious head, grabbing and grappling. Its speakers broadcast, amplified and mega-reverbed Midge's voice as he proclaimed,

"The power of Muscle Jesus compels you!"

A fifty foot spout of inky liquid that shot out from the device and over a rocky outcropping convinced him otherwise. He sighed. He cursed under his breath. This was the sort of thing that made him hate x-tech most of all.

Befuddled she scrolls up through her wrist comp's message history. Ah, there. She had missed a sponsor's challenge to immediately use the terminal. How delightfully... whimsical. Bah. Crazy quantum fèn probably would have frelled her up something fierce anyway. Yea. Not sour grapes or anything.

Scramble breaks into a short run, before leaping back into the sky. No reason to sulk about it. Things to do places to be.

The curious effect of the QED terminal had piqued Aethelreds interest, and he would be contacting Mirko about potential fat stacks of cash pertaining to replication of that coffin nail, but for now he wanted to see what else that odd little box could do. To that end, he added a couple of me challenges.

Stev frowned, reviewing the scan results for the vault's contents, almost completely disregarding the superheated blast that was washing over him--and incinerating Trav and Vict--as he did so.

"Really? That's it? Seems a bit poo poo, doesn't it? I mean, I could do with some patching up after, you know, that, but it hardly seems worth it to stick around for that when we've got a couple medkits and a bunch of toxic waste for you to swim in. I don't know about you, Cryo, but I say we head out."

Stev paused and ignited his Thermal Lance, carving a message into the rock.

With his trusty Squidpack safely placed inside the transmat hopper beneath one of Rime's Luxe Crucibles, all Kalpernicus had left to do in the Wrecking Crew games was watch and wait. As a Sponsor, waiting for the materiel exfiltration that took place at the end of the games was a bit of a painstaking chore, but Kal had plenty of other fun things to occupy himself with, so long as he was stationed on the Lucindas' pleasure barge, things that would let him while away the time in comfort and style and decadent excess. Kal was going to enjoy himself, at least until the Capricorn rig was defeated. Besides, Kalpernicus had a big plan that he was going to enact, one that would surely speed up the process of Capricorn's defeat. Agitated by his racing thoughts, Kalpernicus threw himself before his private quarter's desk and fired up his Sponsor console.

"Patience, Kal," he idly reminded himself as his foot tapped in place. "Rime wasn't blown up in a day."

Kalpernicus reviewed his Sponsor-issued Wrecker Challenges and got down to editing them for relevancy. One of them had just been completed by the Wrecker named Scramble, and Kal had a lingering suspicion that the other two challenges he was looking at would never get completed by the Wreckers, not on this map at least. He crossed them all off from his Sponsor console and didn't look back.

Seeing several requests ping up on his sponsor interface, Aethelred reviews them in picoseconds thanks to the ol' cognitive acceleration matrix. It takes a few moments longer to actually queue up the purchases and allocate the funds. There's also the matter of another request from Bobby-Jack, asking for permission to release funds to Rook for another mutagen. For now, it seemed, Rook and Pertinax had a shared interest in the continued evolution and survival of the Cancer Killer, so the relevant encrypted seals are applied, the requisite disbursement notifications sent.

Aethelred is purchasing two Mutagens for Cryo, an Experimental Medikit v.1 for Stev, and splitting the cost of a Portaluxe between the two. Also authorising Rook to use funds from BJJ to purchase another Mutagen.

Further review of recent footage from Rime, specifically that of Capricorn's Flare weapon, also prompts more additions to the Pertinax challenge list.

Perform a focused scan of Capricorn by delivering a sensor into the cryovolcano nearest its last emergence site.

Bobby-Jack whistled under his breath a bit.

"A Beta x-12 Fire Support Platform. Been a while since I last saw one of those", he turned to face Lucinda, "The gun on those is no joke. I've been tuned to take a hit from one of those, you haven't. I suggest you do that fancy pirouette you did last time, whilst I'll see if I can bring this thing down."

And with that, Bobby-Jack flanked the mech, until he reached a little outcropping behind the rig. The he leaped, fell on top of the rig, and sunk his claw into its rear plating, pulling off a widening gash to gain access to its internals as he hung on...

"Look, you can say all you want about how tough Steeljaw Jackson was, I get it. I do! But his left hooks were goddamn miserable, and you know it. Even if he managed to close the distance on Threshmaster, that doesn't get him anywhere when he doesnt have a solid set of grapnels to keep Thresh immobilized. It's Thresh's win by dismemberment by round five at the latest."

Stev was so engrossed in his Extreme Cyboxing debate with Cryo as he waded through the methane river that he didn't notice the Methmaw before it had risen up and screeched at them both.

"Shut up, this is mportant" he yelled at the beast as he raised his hands and skeletonized it with a beam of overwhelming heat.

[SCRAMBLE / HP: 4/4 / MOVE: 6 / PATIENT ZERO / FLEXIBLE SNOUT / VOX MUTANDIS / REGENERATIVE BROOD / DRIFT BLADDERS / 25 luxe ]

A plume of smoke draws Scramble down. She lands delicately in a hissing cloud of vapor as her lift vessels vent (relatively) hot gasses into the Rime's chill. Before her sits a thoroughly wrecked rig. Just as she's plotting out the best way to crack into the ventral access panel, a shot sizzles over her left shoulder. Her body drops into a pirouetting crouch even as the conscious part of her mind considers how close that came to giving her a new breathing hole. There! She spots what can only be the rig's pilot lining up a second shot from behind a low rise. Scramble leaps forward, hand rising to the rig ripper over her shoulder as she charges. It roars to life as she closes with the pilot.

Ripping (accounting for cover this time): 1d8 3

The pilot dodges back adroitly as Scramble clears the rise. Invective sears the air.

(Forget to downgrade for cover on the first roll.)
