That's essentially right in line with what something like this would go for in the USA.

https://landcruisersdirect.com/cars/1980-toyota-land-cruiser-bj41-9961/

https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/cars-for-sale/toyota/land-cruiser/1969078.html

https://bringatrailer.com/2016/05/31/stateside-rarity-1979-toyota-land-cruiser-bj41/

I'm assuming the interior is in good shape too? F/BJ40s are into classic car territory here though, like old Broncos and old Stingray Corvettes so it might be a different thing elsewhere.

Worry not friend, a similar sort is up for auction on Tuesday next week! It's TAA too so if it sells we'll see the final price.

EDIT

Little money? As in how much?

I wonder how the market would be for those here, the less fancier ones would make good work vans.

Been thinking of importing them here into NZ to sell onto tradesmen and backpacker types. $400-800 USD would make it quite financially viable even after all the fees etc.

$1600 at the low end for really nice ones. That's under $5k for a large Toyota van in good shape. As for using them for actual work though...

madeintaipei posted:

I can see a single person using one but whatever their trade would have to benefit from the gimmick. Sure a plumber can run around in a early 90s HiAce but what does that actually add to their business? Why wouldn't they just use a Transit Connect or an Econoline or an Express instead? Those are everywhere and are easily worked on and parts-sourced.
If you have a business that the vehicle is an accessory to it then yeah I can see that. There is a family that uses a Hijet to sell shaved ice out of in Florida. I feel that's a pretty good use for a weird import. The ever-present rural post route workers too.

That's why the backpacker camper-types like them, the idea of self-sufficiency and a 4x4 (with diesel usually!) really appeals to a lot of people. The crossover seems high.

Picked up my kei's a week ago. A pic of the van getting its pic taken, and the truck.

Truck is stupid clean, has a small dent that I need to pull but that is about it.

The van is a bit more work but ok. A/C still busted, have not had time to look at door handle. Some funny things, no rear seat belts. Also, the rear defrosting lines spell out Atrai, so you see that when you defrost. Seats fold down to mate up with back ones to make a bed.

I will get more, not my product but this one https://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/ctd/d/1992-honda-acty-street-4wd/6501748940.html while expensive is about as close to being mint as you can get. I have seen it in person, was really well maintained.

edit: to compare it to ones you see on the auction house, this would be a 4-4.5 and the interior would be a B or A depending on the auction house. Mechanical would be an A.

Here is all I have on my phone. If you zoom in on the back you can see the Atrai written in defrost coil. If i had a perfect pick this would be cosmic roof, turbo, and with factory a/c not dealer installed.

That Atrai is rad as hell. Also as far as I can tell no kei vans are going to have seatbelts in the rear, not any legal for US import anyway.

Lord of Garbagemen posted:

This is true too, there are hardly any vans at all that show up and the ones that do are usually ungraded (***) or R grade. R grade isn't bad but you must get an inspection on them to make sure they are nice. If you just want a kei van then I'd assume get whatever one comes up be it a Subraru or Daihatsu or Honda or whatever. They are similar enough to each other to over-ride the specifics if you just want a tiny van.

EDIT
Could you just install an aftermarket AC unit in there? Like from an air-cooled VW or something? Rather than trying to chase down repairs for whatever one you have in there?

I could but I think to get top dollar , the buyer is going to be the type of person that wants "factory or like factory". My partner in this venture said we could just pull it all out, and say it never had A/C (better to not have it , then have it but it does not work) but I am not quite ready to pull the trigger on that. My work slows down after the middle of April so I will have time to look into it then. Meanwhile if someone wants to buy it at a decent price with the A/C busted I wont turn them away.

No, I wouldn't. Something rare/specialised like that, it'd be a massive red flag to me to find a "we couldn't make it work, so we removed it" situation on something. I'd either not buy it or drop my offer by a large amount to account for the risk of what other fuckery I'd find when I started digging into it.

If you can't fix it right, leave it alone and let the buyer make the call themselves.

Stupid drivers always breaking car, Gronk fix car...
Ac systems are all pretty similar, so it's not like you couldn't go to a specialist shop and get at least a diagnosis. Amayama some new parts and you're golden. Hoses can be custom made, and there's far fewer compressor designs than it seems.

Hacking out the hardware and without the proper AC-less parts, it'd kinds ruin the quality of your sales philosophy.

This. Don't remove it, because having it not working is better than not having it all in terms of selling.

The one on BaT isn't too bad if you want something weird and I agree taking a bath on a $5k purchase isn't going to be as ruining as losing out on $13k and flipping cars is always going to be super risky. My personally held belief is that the current inflation in 90s Japanese cars isn't sustainable since even once the US demand has been met there will still be a lot of them and someone is going to be left holding the bag on all those GTRs, Evos, Celicas etc...

However that said I think the following are going to hold their value forever:

R34 GTR (duh they have hardly ever moved from their original retail price in some cases)
Mk4 Supra (even the lovely auto ones are making good money and there is no shortage of 1JZ/2JZ power trains to swap in + oh hey the car from The Fast and the Furious!)
Evo 1 to Evo 6 (the hardcore ones before Mitsi realised they could make some money selling slightly softer ones in larger numbers)
2001 Impreza WRX 2 door (rare and have been sought after for years already)
Honda Integra DC2 (serious drivers love these things and I do to, double wishbone suspension all round and VTEC in a light car unf)

There will be more but they will be quirky things like the March Super Turbo.

Future Winners aka stuff that will be open to import to the US in the 10 years:

Nissan Stagea RS Four (Wagon built on Skyline platform with 4WD and an RB25DET :getin:)
Honda Integra DC5 (not as good as a DC2 but feels more modern on the inside and still handles great)
Nissan S15 Silvia (more modern 200SX and easy to make stupid fast however already holding its value well)

These are the main ones that come to mind but really after the Late 90s pretty much all the cool stuff went away.

Could possibly add the Legnum VR4 to the list. (I really want one)

A part of this Hilux Surf is that it was listed as 'Toyota Other' rather than a Hilux Surf. and when you DO find a vert Jimny it almost always is lifted to high hell, doesn't have AC and has the drivers seat replaced with some goofy hard racing one with an awful aftermarket steering wheel. Jimnys are desirable too so sometimes I'll see one that looks nice and it will go for 4000 USD. Next week one almost identical to it will go for 1200. :iiam:

I asked for a translation but if it is truly a USDM 4Runner (and not a Canadian one) then the unknown thing that Garbage sees might be due to the odometer being in miles rather than kms. We'll see when I get the translation but I'm not in a position to bid on it anyway.

Asked for a translation on this sheet too and a favor to let me know what the results are of the auction if it sells. With USS auctions they don't ever reveal the final prices but I've asked before to peek into USS ones after they are done in order to get the sold prices.
