Sure but isn't Stephens basically next in line for the title after Ortega? Aside from a paycheck what's he got to gain by fighting Aldo?

Nobody has anything to gain from fighting Aldo but it would be insanely sick if he did and one would hope that the matchmakers would do something like (lose to Aldo)->(beat literally anybody)->(title shot) rather than let Aldo Nogueira up the division

Yes, we as the fans have everything to gain. That's not really the point though. Stephens can sit around for a few months and then fight for the title

you’re not wrong but the ufc is an entertainment company and I personally would like Stephens a lot more if he chose to reenact Swanson vs Aldo in Brazil before fighting for the title instead of crying on twitter

aldo just wants to fight him. stephens hasn't said anything afaik and may well be content to just sit around for a title shot. it would be undeniably sick though.

Wow, 107 new posts. I thought Jon Jones must have broken that lady’s other arm. Instead, it was two pages of some guy trying to redefine the phrase “performance enhancing,” and one sexily homoerotic tweet from Luke Rockhard. If it weren’t for that second thing, this would have been a waste of my time.

Pennington is getting the title shot because before she got hurt she beat Meisha Tate into retirement and her last loss was a close decision to Holly Holm.

e. and this matchup had been announced a long time ago, but this is just the announcement of the date.

And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.
i take this to be a good sign

Stephens sparking Aldo could definitely get him a queue skip over Ortega if Holloway's out for a while.

All the Sean O'Malley hype makes me feel like I'm in an episode of Twilight Zone. Every talking head insisting he's a future superstar and insisting he has that "it" quality. Meanwhile, he seems like a decent fighter who comes across as a little awkward in interviews. Am I missing something?

Experiencing his debut live on DWTNCS with Snoop Dogg and Urijah Faber's commentary and then gushing over his performance? I have to admit that hilarious magical night made me make a mental note to keep an eye out for him.

I see more star power in that dude who smashed Dariush. He's as creepy as Rory MacDonald, speaks better than him, and looks like a decent fighter.

He doesn't have goofy hair and memorable tattoos, though.

I watched this too and Snoop yelling "O'MALLEEEEEYY!" over and over was pretty hilarious. That's mostly what I remember though. That and a pretty sharp right he used to put down his opponent. Then he walked in the booth with Faber and Snoop and just kind of stood there awkwardly. Maybe he was a bit starstruck or something.

I'll definitely watch him fight because he does cool poo poo but I don't see the shooting star quality being attributed to him by many.

actually, yeah, I am a little mad
He has the years and skills to be a really good fighter, but who knows if he'll be a Mighty Mouse or a Conor in terms of draw.

he showed up to the open workouts unscheduled in a weed leaf pattern robe and he smokes weed and he looks kind of annoying. that's about as much as it takes to stick out in ufc

As I said, he ticks all of Dana's hype train boxes. White, Irish name, tattooed, trash talks, swings for the KO. The rest is coachable

I feel like I never heard of the guy before this card, and he had a good fight with a memorable ending on the most recent night of fighting. I guess I'm not sure where the "why's he getting so much hype" comments are coming from?

threeagainstfour

I think he can probably be a really good fighter as he develops. He's got a bunch of bad tattoos, throws a lot of spinning poo poo, and has his own strain of weed named after him. The MMA media always hops all over any fighter with an iota of personality and declares they are going to be the next big thing so not surprising to see them doing that with O'Malley.

I watch more ufc than 90% of fans and I had no idea who he was despite being on the main card of a ppv and billed above arlovski, dariush, dodson, poo poo even Mike pyle and caraway. That is getting a little bit of a push when your contract is probably 10/10

he got a lot of focus on the UFC Embedded for this fight and Soukamthath showed up like once, when O'Malley was trying to clown him at staredowns
