If I'm not mistaken, the Black Hound was supposed to be a backer-created inn, but the backer never responded to the surveys, so they put in some lines about the old owner abandoning it.

Speaking of monks earlier, anyone who hasn't tried it before should load up an old White March save and spec Zahua into being a Long Pain focused build and then take it into a fight. I've said it before but it's really funny, try it and it's a risky gimmick too.

You rush him in, take some wounds, Torment's Path to get him out, activate Long Pain, and then you just watch every other enemy (especially ranged ones) just wither under the weight of ranged superpunches doing 20-30 damage with less than a second in between each one.

This is correct. There is some audio commentary on that if you have that option activated.

I believe GAF users bought an island chain in Deadfire as well, but last I heard the folks who moved to ERA (aka most of them, including the person who put in the pledge for it) were contacting the devs to try to see if the GAF references could be removed.

As far as I can tell, Obsidian quietly removed his portrait from PoE2, so I would not at all be surprised to see them quickly scrubbing those references away.

Also, link the base stats of the weapon types in the weapon specialization screen. They're just as important to weapon type selection as the modals are.

And it's annoying trying to remember what the baseline bonus of a morning star is now that it's no longer an interrupt bonus, or how big the accuracy malus of a large shield is, or whatever.

You can also hotkey groups of people (or pets) with ctrl + 7-9 and reselect them with the same number, also like RTS games. Helpful for rangers.

The only character in Pillars of Eternity that I disliked was Aloth--mainly because he was an elf wizard with an upper class accent and posh airs. His little plot twist seemed to lean more into that element of his character than to redeem it. I was disappointed he's one of the main returning characters, although I loved Eder and Pallegina. Still, I'm curious as to how he'll play out in Deadfire.

Grieving Mother was one of the weaker NPCs in Pillars of Eternity, possibly my least favorite after Aloth. But mainly because she was a non-entity rather than directly offensive. I thought her character and story tied in with the broader crisis facing the region and did a good job showing the emotional stakes involved.

I think there's room in the same game for characters like Durance and Grieving Mother and Eder and Sagani. I don't agree that its jarring to have different characters with different tones in the same game, and think there's a lot of potential for interesting character dynamics if they actually interact with each other. See, e.g.; Planescape:Torment, which had Morte and Annah along with Dakkon and Falls-from-Grace.

I don't know how Durance can be a Mary Sue. He doesn't have any special powers, he was one of a team comprising dozens of people, and he's scorned by his goddess, he doesn't have a special relationship with her. There are lots of constraints in role playing in reactivity in the main campaign of Pillars of Eternity(the DLC is much better about this), and its seems more like a function of the production cycle than any particularly unique aspects of Durance's character.

It's funny how an internet echo chamber develops. Avellone is presumed to write only metaphysical/philosophical characters. But he also wrote New Reno in Fallout 2. I don't know if he wrote other NPCs than Kriea, but I think even Kriea is badly misunderstood. As others have pointed out, she's not a Mary Sue-she's also full of poo poo, and she frequently fails in her goals. Avellone was the project lead on the New Vegas DLCs save Honest Hearts. And yes, Ulysses talked about high concepts a lot. I don't know if Avellone wrote any of the characters in Old World Blues or Dead Money, but Old World Blues especially didn't have the stereotypical Avellone writing. Same with Wasteland 2. Same with Alpha Protocol. Same with Prey. Like a lot of figures on the internet, the perception meme has a lot more sway than the reality.

There is a pretty interesting correlation between people who think Durance is a Mary Sue and people who think that RPGs should give you the ability to completely rewrite a character's personality with a few conversations, a la Jack from ME2(paragon path).

I liked Durance because he was an important look into some major historical events of the setting. On top of this, his ending has him realizing that his god just wants him to gently caress off and die alone somewhere, and depending on how you talk to him, that's exactly what happens. Yes, he sets off to find a way to kill a god, but since it's been proven it can happen(kind of) and he now knows that gods have vulnerabilities since they're man made, that's not mary sue at all. We'll see if Obsidian can do more with him, but I doubt they'll use him again - he doesn't have much use to the story and I don't think the PoE saga is necessarily about killing gods.

Says you. Killing them is my number one goal ever since I found out about their shenanigans.

And yeah, Durance was fine, in the sense that you should see him as more of a challenge in addition to the rest of the game. As in, dismantling his philosophies. Sometimes, making companions see reason rather than agreeing with them or trying to help them with everything they do is more interesting.

I understand being down for debating philosophy, but consider that he’s not just a traveling companion--you are bringing him to fight alongside you, in life-and-death circumstances. And while I may be willing to debate politics with some dickhead while I’m traveling, I don’t see much in-story reason to bring him along to fight at your side, especially when he explicitly tells you he may judge you a bad seed and therefore need to be killed. The last thing I’d want is to suddenly get stabbed in the back by someone who’s supposed to be on my own team. There is basically zero incentive to take an untrustworthy loving wackjob along with me when he may well just shank me in my sleep. I liked the idea where he lies and tells you he’s your only chance for a cure, because then the PC has a compelling reason to take him along and risk getting shanked.

Again, Durance’s impotence as an actor is his defining feature, and it’s most apparent when he’s making threats. He talks a big game cuz he knows his soul is half as big as any other guy’s.

As for why you’d take him with you for fighting, he’s actually the least nonsensical party add, his magical power is immediately evident on meeting him he seems more enthusiastic about violence than anyone else, save maybe Aloth (who you meet while murdering some kith together). It should break your immersion more when Pallegina or Kana goes along with a random battle in the wilderness off the road, or Eder joins in on murdering a man in the Gilded Vale town center for his plate mail.
