Well, my grandpa finally died. Old bastard clung on 5 days with pneumonia after his most recent heart attack, with end-stage COPD. It's weird, everyone knew he was a deadman walking, but he turned for the worse so suddenly that it caught all of us off guard. He was laughing, walking, having fun with the family 2 days before he was hospitalized. Half the people in my family thought he was going to go back home soon because he's so drat stubborn. Hell, when I said goodbye to him the last time, he tried to trick me into standing him up so he could get a ride with me

This sounds lovely, but it's almost a relief that he passed, because at least he isn't suffering anymore. That was a very long 5 days...

Finally registered my Acura.

Apparently because I never sent a plate in like 10 years ago, it meant I still 'had' a plate in the system. Nice $225 savings. gently caress yeah. Went in expecting to spend 400+ and walked out spending 200.

2008 Spectra5. Other contemporaries seem to have a similar issue, anecdotally, at least.

Have 130+K miles on it now, and it's on the third clutch.

Very much so.

And yeah, a coworker has a Kia Soul that eats clutches every ~75k, and ate a gearbox around 150k. He's up to ~250k.

His biggest annoyance is there's just no aftermarket (parts) for so much of it. When his starter went, it was junkyard or dealer only... think it was the same when his alternator went out.

Heh, the second gear synchro poo poo the bed right after the first clutch (no relation, as far as I can tell,) replaced under warranty. It's still behaving 60K miles later.
Parts are not bad. I've found everything I needed on Rock Auto, eBay, and Amazon, so far. The AC compressor was a bit annoying @ ~$300, but the replacement door handle was $25, radiator was $90, I forget how much the clutch kit was, but reasonable, and the cable to fix the current door handle issue was all of $6. It helps that the Spectra shares a lot of parts with the Hyundai Accent, among others.

There are some directors that, even if they make a flop, talent shows through the poor script (Spielberg). There are other directors that are poo poo in every single way, but sometimes the stars align and they crap out something that is excellent and unique and too good for this world (Duncan Jones).

That's what Moon is. Excellent and inconceivable that it came from the same guy that did Mute and the loving World of Warcraft movie.

My little brother isn't doing well.

He's thirty, living with his girlfriend. Hasn't had health insurance in a very long time, despite my begging him to get it. He was always healthy. He's a big strong man and doesn't get sick.

He quit his office job to do landscaping. It's what he enjoys - manual labor outside. Problem is, four months out of the year there isn't work, and he doesn't plow anymore, so he sits for four months and does nothing but collects unemployment. He was volunteering at an animal shelter because he hates feeling lazy.

Well, somehow he developed what the doctor says is a stomach ulcer. He can't hardly eat, and he pukes up blood all the time. This has driven his anxiety through the roof. He's been to the doctor, been to the hospital, it's been very expensive. He's broke, not working, and not listening to the doctor - he is supposed to be on a strict diet of toast and soup, and instead he's drinking heavily and eating sushi. He refuses to take medication.

He was over briefly Saturday, but left after he puked blood in my toilet. He broke down on the way home (according to my mom) because he doesn't want to be seen like that.

Nobody knows what to do with him and I'm worried sick, as are my parents.

He drinks though, and makes it worse. He tries to hide it from everybody and he won't seek help and doesn't want help because help is for weak people.

I mean, do I try to help anyway, or so I stay away and let him work through it so he doesn't feel like he's being a burden, or what?

With an ulcer there's a pretty good chance this would be a death sentence - most prison health care providers have profit incentives to not treat inmates.

Their relationship is rocky. One day they'll be talking about getting married, the next they're fighting and on the verge of breaking up. He was over yesterday complaining that she's being a bitch, she's complaining that she doesn't know what to do with him, my parents are complaining that he's being self-destructive.

He sold all his furniture when he moved in with her a few years ago, and I've told him he can crash at my place and he knows he can move in with my parents, but again, he feels like he's a burden and wouldn't want to do any of that.

It's really more of a statement on how poor our healthcare industry is here. There isn't anywhere to do to just get healthy and be taken care of if you need it - the only place that will feed you properly and keep you from being stupid is a prison.

It was in jest but it's about all that will keep him from drinking and doing more harm to himself. A hundred years ago they had asylums for that, and convalescent care places, but now those are limited to the elderly and are ludicrously expensive even for those.

That being said, while the SCOTUS ruled that prisoners have a constitutional right to (well, technically that the states have a constitutional duty to provide) healthcare that doesn't mean they actually get it.

Most states seem to have taken the "its cheaper to violate court rulings and pay settlements to the surviving family members" approach than actually abide by what the courts have ordered them to do. If the treatment for your illness isn't "take two inexpensive over the counter pills after each meal" you're very likely to die a needlessly painful, easily preventable death in prison.

Anyone used a mobile tire installer? I went to order new tires and they have an option for getting them installed at your home or office for $25/tire. I have a tire place I like, but it's a huge pain to get there now and $100 to mount and balance 4 tires isn't much more (or any) than I usually pay, I just wonder how well they mount and balance doing it mobile.

I have used mobile tire services on truck and tractor tires with good results. For a car, I would ask the same questions I ask any shop. Primarily, who made your balancer and when was it last calibrated? If they can’t answer either beware. After multiple attempts and multiple shops I have found hunter road force machines the best, but I doubt those work in a cube van.

MomJeans420
Mar 19, 2007

They actually list their equipment on Tirerack's website:

Mounting Equipment: Hunter TC3300 RunFlat capable touchless
Balancing Equipment: Hunter GSP9600 balancer

But I don't know anything about equipment so I can't say if those are good or not. FWIW, I have 16" wheels with regular (not runflat) tires, so I don't think it's the hardest mounting / balancing job.

Sounds decent. Its not road force but it still uses a contact roller. I would give them a try. Hunter or coats are generally considered the best.
