There is a lot of gross sexual content plus him stalking the girl and breaking her into submission so she will "love" him.

Lots of “kids” books delve into some really screwed up poo poo. I remember reading The Chocolate War in middle school and there’s a part where it intricately describes one of the characters jerkin’ it while making out with his thirteen year old girlfriend.

Some people see that kind of gross poo poo in a book and think “wow! they put this gross crap into prose, how deep!” See also: most science fiction

So Ready Player One is basically the Big Bang Theory for gamers?
It's the Big Bang Theory for 80s pop culture as a whole, not just games. It takes place in a VR game, but only because that was the easiest way the author could think up to justify having Godzilla, the entire cast of Ghostbusters, the Predator, the Ninja Turtles etc. all come in for a HUGE party.

If I've learned anything from these last ten years of my life, it's that you can never lose money by underestimating the quality of work that people are willing to consume. I feel that you can write a book where every sentence is no more than ten words long using only words you learn in elementary school and it will sell millions so long as you put enough references into it. Watch out for my next book: Monster Island Romance, where a gamer is sent to a world populated by hot monster ladies and has sex with all of them because they are extremely turned on by his ability to quote game, movie, and science trivia at them. It will sell billions

You'll attempt to write the great American novel, and support yourself in ways not of your choosing. Hopefully sooner rather than later you'll crack open a book that is older than Coca-Cola and realize that here under the sun, there is nothing new left to be written. Once you recover, you can just rattle off whatever you like and sell it by the pound.

The F-plus did an episode on a game with a similar plot, just without the 80's pop culture references.

Get in on nu-metal nostalgia now, that would make a great novel. Throw in some warped tour “punk” while you’re at it.

Ready Player One isn't high art or good science fiction, and it didn't seem like it was really intended as such either. It was fine light read to see what all the hype was about, entertaining like a Donald Duck comic would be.

Along with being really bad, it also has transphobic, homophobic, and racist behavior on the part of the protagonist (and in some ways the author) that never gets addressed or viewed as a bad thing.

Guess I should go read the thread in GBS about this for more on that point.

I didn't mean the classic Barks stuff, but rather the worn out books by whoever wrote the weekly? issues my cousin had laying around on his floor when I was a kid. Some Italian I guess.
