Parrotine posted:Wasn't it a wet fart because most people managed to fix the bugs in time before the new millennium? The biggest reason it was a wet fart was because there was no possibility at all of the bug causing the problems people thought it would. There were seriously people that believed that all of the nukes would launch at 12:01 on January 1st because reasons. There was kvetching over how much it costed to upgrade everything to be compliant but really not much went wrong. Not much really could go wrong except math errors or people getting jury duty notifications for 1900.

I remember a relative of mine who worked at a nuclear power plant at the time talking about running endless simulations leading up yo Y2K, I assume to make sure all the interacting systems that operate it don't suddenly stop communicating with each other. So there were a couple of things that could have gone wrong without precautions I guess, but it wouldn't have been the end of times.

A lot of people spent a lot of time and money making sure it was a wet fart and it always seems a little mean to me that they don't get the credit for doing a good job. So many backend systems (transportation, power, banking) were from the time that punchcards seemed pretty like a pretty cool idea and one thing we have learned is that people will panic over tiny things, so imagine what would happen it transportation ground to a halt and you couldn't get money from the bank or watch TV. Still, I will admit that there was a certain amount of hype at the time:

" The world will literally catch fire nanoseconds after the millenium rolls over!!!! " got good ratings but was so far away from the truth that anybody who knew anything about computers mostly just facepalmed over the idiocy. It's worth remembering that this was in the days before everybody had a computer that fit in their pockets. Internet-capable cell phones are a bafflingly huge change to the world.

A lot of the most essential computer infrastructure also runs on the oldest software/hardware/firmware because it is so drat expensive and risky to upgrade it. Things like banks and insurance, and I imagine transport infrastructure, that sort of thing -- anything with a significant risk/fallout factor becomes incredibly expensive to upgrade, and so upgrades are often not done - and then they just get more expensive as time goes on and you have less Delphi and COBOL developers running around. Forgetting to upgrade your late 90s personal computer to be Y2K compliant was not going to cause planes to fall out of the sky and the atmosphere to ignite. But even though Facebook didn't exist back then, we still used computers for a lot of crucial stuff, and a lot of work was put into making sure that the Y2K bug didn't result in serious heartache, monetary loss, or loss of life. It's like saying why did we bother with WW2 if Hitler was just going to shotgun lobotomise himself in '45.
