When my CJ-8 got totalled, I had to take the title to the BMV myself, change it to a salvage title, then take the title to the insurance company and they wrote the check.

Then the whole re-certifying deal started. It was a big pain, but I got paid for the truck, fixed it for less than $1000 and got paid for the truck again when I sold it after re-certifying, so it was worthwhile.

Okay so I know that post seemed like I was being a gigantic pussy but I didn't really put into words just how wrong and 100% obvious it was that the place was being cased. I've had it happen before, once with the standard "are you interested in the security system I am selling?" scam, and another time with the "does X live here?" scam. Doesn't make me paranoid, just prepared. I've lived in this place for two months now and that is the first time anybody has knocked on the door, and she was very interested in what the inside of my apartment looked like, despite me taking up the opening and closing the door to my shoulder to try to block it. IDK how else to put it, just very obvious. I just moved one of the cameras from a few feet behind the blinds, to the exterior side of the blinds so it is more visible.

No, I meant quite the opposite.

It's a scary situation and you handled it well and in a suitably macho way. Kudos to you for not being a pushover at the time.

But I know that poo poo like this can hit you later and even the strongest of us can get unnerved.

I knew something was wrong with it so at least now I'm forced to deal with it and can make everything right.

I bought a Neato.

Friends of ours have had a baby, so wifey is now a 50% stay at home mum, and the robovac was taking too long to go around the house and working while baby was trying to sleep, so they bought a dyson stick vac, kicked the dogs outside most of the time and sold the Neato. So I got myself a 12 month old, $1100 Botvac D75 for $250 and an oil change on his 4wd!

First thing it needed was a name.

And it highlighted just why we bought the drat thing... we really dont have enough time to keep up on vacuuming our house. It filled its bin like this SIX TIMES the first time it went around. We've got three cats and our back yard is a construction site so theres a fair bit of dirt tracked in, but my god...

We've also got some friends who are allergic to the cats, ranging from mild congestion to "I cant step inside your house without taking 40mg of Phenergan first" bad, so we're hoping by having this trundle around every day it might help reduce the allergen burden.

Of course tho, $1100 robot, 48hrs after we buy it, shits the bed:

Its a commonly reported problem, and the first suggestion is "Replace the battery" since that switch isolates the battery from the robot to prevent it self discharging when its sitting around off the power dock. Except my battery showed good healthy voltage. Turns out that the ENTIRE power supply of that machine runs through a tiny little switch. And it burnt the contacts out. Bypassed it with a jumper wire and its actually running better than it did when we first got it. God knows why they went for full current through a small consumer switch- almost everything else uses a low current constant supply 12v switch to trigger a high current relay to handle that kinda load.

Interesting to see inside a Neato tho!

Hell there are some sensors onboard that thing.

Oh- and the missus bought herself a new computer for doing her teaching prep at home.

My local sportsball team is so bad they're one game away from having the guaranteed worst record in the league for the season.

At this point they could put Barkley back on court for five minutes a game and it would still be an improvement.

Was hoping for the best, planning for the worst, with the worst being what you said. I've kept receipts for everything I've purchased so far, and took a photo of the VIN tag + the actual car that donated the used parts.

The registration is good until the last day of the year, so in theory I shouldn't get any hassle about it being on the road (at least, I shouldn't get stopped purely based on the tags). The only hassle I might get is I'm probably going to have to rip the front bumper off before driving it to a friend's shop to get the alignment checked out. I don't want to sink any more money into parts until I verify that it can be aligned, either with existing parts or some new parts. I planned to zip tie the front plate to the car while the bumper is MIA, which should satisfy the legal requirements to drive it. I did try driving it a little tonight (just around the parking lot, and briefly on the road in front of my apartment complex - the PD here will most definitely stop you in a hurry for lights being out), and it seems to be pulling a little. I'm not sure if it's because there's a brand new tire on the LF vs ~1/3 worn tires on the rest of the car, or because something is bent, but aside from a pull, it wasn't handling any differently than usual. The new tire is the same tire that's on the other 3 wheels.

Trying not to get too wound up about it. After buyback and deductible, I should have about $2k (... once I actually get the check), before what i've already spent. Extending the rental car a few days will eat into that. I'm not going to find anything with solid maintenance history or a history of reliability for that price unless I really go out into the sticks, so I'm pretty much stuck trying to fix this. The only real options are some of the builder cars at Pick n Pull, which generally consist of a "new" VW bug, a beat up 90s minitruck (currently a mid 90s S-10), and some kind of CUV. At the moment that's a 2001 Outback for $1300. They're generally drivers, but you have no history and no real info on them; you just know they got junked for some reason, and PnP decided they were good enough to sell as a whole, running vehicle. kastein's experience with Subarus has kinda turned me off on a salvage Subaru, even though it was the cleanest looking of the ~8 cars they had.

"It's a small world after all" story.

Last night, my final delivery was from a place. Walked inside, was BSing with the takeout employee while waiting on my order.

His accent sounded familiar. "Where ya from man?"

He named my hometown. I name a semi famous restaurant in our hometown. He groans and says he hates the place, but most of his friends love it.

Asked him what high school he went to and when he graduated. He told me. It's not my high school, he graduated over a decade after I did, but my favorite teacher taught at his school around that time.

I asked him if he had <teacher> for history. "How the gently caress do you know him?!"

~650 miles away from my home town, and not only do I randomly bump into someone from there, but I find someone who had the same teacher as me. Small loving world.

Said teacher is still teaching, though no longer in my hometown (or even my state). He and I still stay in touch via Facebook, about ~25 years after my last class with him.

Funny when poo poo like that happens.

My last command in Cali I met a dude who I eventually found out was from the next town over, which is a feat in small town northeast Texas. Then find out his older brother graduated with one of my best friends, we know a ton of the same people, and had been at a lot of the same parties and poo poo as teens.

Then as we were planning a roadtrip home for the holidays, we got another new guy who wanted to go because he lived in a town like 20m away from us.

Edit: since you're an old and remember Honda's, normal for it to take an abnormally long time to start if you gently caress up and let go before it catches? I did it yesterday and it was a solid 5 or 6 tries before it finally decided to start again. Also, if I take a picture of something under the hood, chances you'd know It?
