Huh. Some caravan utilising nomadic traveller sorts have helped themselves to a couple of old Landie axles I had sat in a corner by my hedge. Including lifting them over the fence. I'll pull the CCTV footage but I suspect it's just on the edge if what the cameras see. It's a minor irritation, but I'm not entirely sure why they nicked them. They're not really worth any great amount to either sell or weigh in relative to the sheer effort of moving the drat things. Ah well. Hopefully they'll pick on a nice retired gentleman next and get stabbed to death.

Thank gently caress that's over. I have no idea if I passed or not, but I don't find out for like 10 weeks so time to put it completely out of my mind I guess. First thing on the agenda: nap.

Just broke my last pair of good glasses. All the local shops closed before 7pm today, and open after 7am tomorrow (also close before 7pm). I work 7am until 7pm tomorrow. I can get by without them, kinda, but with the double vision and a left eye that can barely make out text with correction I am not looking forward to the next few days.

My friend lemme tell you about the majesty of Zenni Optical. Cheap, spare pairs of glasses for like $15 and not terrible styles. I know it doesn't help you right this minute but it's worth checking out to have spares when this sort of thing happens.

I bought this pair off clearly contacts for $12.50 (some coupon code way back for free frames, lenses, and coatings, just pay shipping). I've gotten over half a decade of abuse on them. Not long after I posted, the other arm snapped off while I was loving with them trying to get them to sit on my face, so I had them sorta balanced on my nose. Then, I got it in my head to solder the arms back on and couldn't locate them. Stood up to see if they'd fallen under my desk. Glasses fell off my nose and I prompty put my foot down on them and now my face is 8" from the screen with my left eye closed and my right eye in a squint just to read this as I'm typing it. RIP Cheap glasses, you were the longest-lasting pair I've ever owned but tonight the Universe and Physics conspired to kill you, I am sorry. E: Funny thing is these were my spare pair, pressed back into service three years ago after my other pair broke. At least now I can afford to get an exam and new glasses, just have to wait until Monday I guess. I'm gonna try to weasel out of work so I can get a new pair tomorrow, my vision is just bad enough to be really loving annoying. They feel cheap and don't fit particularly well, but they look good and hold up to a lot of abuse. Between the 8 or so pairs that I've bought, the most expensive was $40 for prescription sunglasses I wish their shipping times were better, but it's worth the 90% discount vs brick and mortar

My last pair of glasses before the ones I have now, I used heat shrink tube to hold one arm on after the hinge failed. Worked pretty well actually.

So somebody hit a massive pothole right up the street from the entrance to our complex and they pulled in here to wait for a tow. I ran out to see if they needed help, they said a truck was on the way so no worries. Not long after the dude knocks on my door, super embarrassed, says the truck called them and will be another 45 minutes. So I grabbed a jack and some tools and went to help them out. Smooth wheel change, massive dent in their wheel but they're rolling again. And then I drop the car and don't see the dude is putting the wheel in the back and clonk his head with the hatch, if he'd been three inches forward he'd have probably shattered the glass. So uh, be careful when good samaratining!

I broke a pair of glasses at the bridge (single bar design) and used heat-shrink to hold it together. Worked surprisingly well since my ears kept the normal alignment. Wore those for almost a month while waiting for a new pair of progressive lenses to be made by my doctor's office. They thought the repair was brilliant and had everyone in the office come out to look at it.

Working as an optician for seven years, I did a LOT of repairs for people that just needed to get through the next month or six. We had a tool I called "hot fingers" that would grab a piece of metal (usually a hingepiece) and, while pinching it, heat it up with 24VDC so it could be melted into zyl (cellulose acetate) frames for mounting. One way I figure out how to (inappropriately) use them was to bend a piece of solid wire into a kind of "staple," and heat it up with the hot fingers to "stitch" the zyl frames together. Zyl bridge broke? Three stitches, front top and back (but not bottom because that tends to rest against people's nose bridge). Or, if they were wide Wayfarer-style glasses, two stitches crossed against each other in the front, with the "legs" of the stitch/staple melted into the plastic. I even used the serrated pliers (which are rare in a glasses shop, don't want to mar the frames) to "serrate" the legs of the staple, so they would bond better with a kind of ratchet mechanism when melted into the zyl. If it was a true emergency, and the bridge was thick enough, I could make wire "pins" and melt them into one side of the frames, then drill the other side matching and glue them together, like screws and pins in a broken bone. I had a huge box of old, garbage frames that I kept around solely so I could cobble something together with the oxy/propane brazing torch to get someone through. Or bend the frame material into a splint and glue or braze it alongside the broken piece. I brazed a lot of broken hinges on metal frames solid, too. Makes inserting/removing the lenses kind of difficult, but we had a diamond wheel lens edger that I could use to edge the lenses down just a tad so they'd pop in.

I used Gorilla Glue for my glasses when they broke at work. The hinge broke from the arm so we grabbed some GG, put a drop on the hinge, and used electrical tape to hold it in place while it dried. Worked like a charm!

Man, when it rains it pours. Taxes due, didn't withhold enough - $2500 federal, haven't done state yet. Turbo blew in my V70R, just bought a used one for $375 Yesterday I noticed the front tires on my daughter's car are showing belts. I might be able to keep running the rears as they look fairly new but it's AWD so I may have to replace all 4. $300 minimum. Woke up to a dead furnace this morning. It's 24 years old so fixing it would be pointless. I almost replaced it last year but I was and still am digging out of my unemployment hole from 2016. $3000 minimum. On top of that a buddy talked me in to a $1600 vacation before any of this happened and I haven't paid him back for it yet. It's next month. Welp, at least I have good credit. I guess I'll start by buying a couple space heaters so my kid and I don't freeze to death tonight. Also my gas fireplace still works.

Sigh. So Free Car Part Deux was a bust. It was a 1992 Cayman (color matched wheels) Ford Escort GT but when we arrived to check it out the dude's mother suddenly wanted $3000 for it. Car is rough as hell, doesn't run but is shockingly rust free. We sat there while she screamed at her son for 10 minutes and bailed. I guess she told him to get it out of the driveway or she was donating it and when we showed up to get it she went berserk on him.

EGTs are hens teeth now because Escort equals disposable car GT or not. I was looking for a long time and gave up, same with BG 323s, they are cars no one cared about so hardly any of them were taken care of.

So, by law here in Ontario, an Optician cannot issue glasses without a paper prescption. lovely too, cause one of the brick and mortar stores offers not only same-day but right now they have a deal on for $400 for two pairs with lenses, coatings, etc. I priced out similar on Clearly, and just for the same day service I think I'm willing to pay the $50 or so difference. Apparently Clearly Contacts has been battling (for over a year) a lawsuit brought against them over this, cause they don't take a signed rx. It happened out west in BC a few years ago and they won and had the legislation changed. It seems dumbfuck as hell that I couldn't just give them my rx (I have it saved on Clearly) and get a pair of loving glasses so I can see.
