Not huge into slam or BDM, but my friend's band (https://embodiedtorment.bandcamp.com) is pretty great and their album has some good slams on it.

So I don't know if I'm walking into another irony trap here or not, but why the gently caress doesn't Blind Guardian reissue Nightfall in MIddle-Earth on vinyl? I'd gladly pay $100 for it if it had some dumb bonus poo poo, but $300+shipping on discogs for a picture disc without a sleeve is a little beyond silly. Plus the band would get $0 for that.

The impetus for this poo poo post was me listening to the album for the first time in a very long time and realizing A) it's the best loving album ever and B) it's one of the few you can't get on vinyl without selling a kidney.

speaking of kalmah, i'm not a fan of their music but this interview is good. translated by me with a little help from google translate:

https://www.maaseuduntulevaisuus.fi/kantri/artikkeli-1.231640

quote:

We played in Slovenia for 20,000 people. It was great to play in front of such a large crowd, but immediately after the end of the gig, I started missing the Pudasjärvi forests, " Antti Kokko remembers.

Antti and his older brother, Pekka Kokko, founded the Kalmah band playing death metal at the end of the 1990's in Pudasjärvi.

The soul spirit of the band embodies the forests and swamps of Pudasjärvi. There is hardly many heavy rock bands in the world that take a loud stance on nature values.

Kalmah's eighth album smells of marsh tea and pinecones.

"Don't start a forest fire but listen to Kalmah's Fire," reads the cover in the cover letter.

The mascot of Kalmah is Suoherra (master of the swamp). The figure emerges from Pudasjärvi's brink of freshness inspired by the Iron Maiden-inspired Eddie mascot.

"Suoherra, created tongue in cheek, surprisingly lives to this day. Later, we started calling our music swamp metal because no one else plays metal quite like ours. "

Behind the humour there's a strong message. The situation in the forests of Northern Finland genuinely worries the band.

"The logging target numbers are hard in the Pudasjärvi region, but especially post-harvesting, the soil is completely torn to the ground, and it takes tens of years to recover" says Kokko.

He hopes that the Finnish forest industry would adopt a model from Sweden, which does not do clear-cutting.

"The tree grows well in our western neighbour, even though there is no ditch forests. In Sweden, around the swamps, they leave large strips of forest that are good for the game. Hopefully game-handling forestry would become even more popular in Finland. Should we create some kind of incentive money. "

Kokko lives with his wife and two daughters in Pudasjärvi, on the shore of the lake and in the middle of the forest. Metal music is a hobby and a side work for him.

He works as a software developer for daytime work. Work is handled remotely from home.

The couple maintain the Suoherra hunting blog. Hunting is a way of life for them and the reason they returned to Pudasjärvi.

"We lived in Kiiming for a few years. When my wife started to get interested in hunting, we started to visit Pudasjärvi every weekend . We came to the conclusion that we should move here permanently. "

The majority of Kalmah's fans live abroad, and the band is also performing more out of the country's borders. Foreign fans have taken note of nature-based lyrics.

Some tourists have become inspired by texts in Northern Finland to look at forest landscapes.

When making metal music, Kokko finds inspiration from the silent nature.

Blood Run Cold's melody is the same as Eränkävjät's theme song (a finnish nature-themed tv-show he was involved in the making of)

"I got the idea when we were picking cloudberries. That's where all my other ideas arise as well, as my life revolves around the forest. If I won in the lottery, I would buy forest land with the money. I could spend the rest of my life taking care of it. It's good for the body and the mind. "

Cradle of Filth in Minneapolis was canceled last minute as staff and openers couldn't get in :/ so 18 more years to see em play live but at least they were there to speak with us, sign setlists and take some pics. Dani is short as hell which I knew of but never witnessed in person. Setlist looked great too - some great stuff from the old days.

This is pretty cool. I have a lot of family near there in northern Sweden so I hoped I’d like it but that’s not my poo poo. It’s weird to talk about forests and swamps then rock some Iron Maiden style leads. Eyehategod got the swamp style figured out a lot better.

wtf i feel like i'm in the twilight zone with all these "ghost is great live" posts. i've seen them live and they just played their songs as-is, with no one moving from their spots except for the singer who also decided to spend 5+ minutes of their set bantering about loving. half the audience was checking their phones.
