This might be a good plan. Get a 4K TV with real good HDR, those TVs currently are quite expensive. Don't make the mistake I made and get a cheap HDR TV. This is what I bought because I didnt know better https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072FN2B2N/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It's a great 4K TV, but the HDR is only 8bit and quite weak overall. You want something with dolby digital HDR.

I did more or less the same thing because my hand was forced when my old TV straight-up died, and I really couldn't afford to dive into anything fancier. Still I'm happy with the results, and I kind of feel that for non-gaming purposes 1080 is enough p's. Hell even for gaming purposes, hitting some real diminishing returns territory, not to mention how hard to come by 4K material actually is.

I'd like a bigger tv but my budget doesn't stretch to a 'good' 4K one at the moment so I'll probably just wait until my current one breaks or the next console gen makes 4K standard and I don't have to worry about getting one with the crap HDR or whatever.

Honestly I'm teetering on the opinion that you're probably off just getting a really good 1080p TV. Could well be a function of how big a screen you want to get and how far you sit from it, but there's limited 4K material available especially if your internet isn't really good and it's really not a significant step up from 1080p IMO. Maybe if you spend a few grand and get a big OLED.

Few have truly dark rooms which is definitely what you want for a projector, on top of all the setup they require in terms of a surface to project on, a place where the projector can go without being obstructed, stuff like that. But at least for 1080p units you can get decent ones for not that much, and they're the only modern option for 3D if you still want to do that, but then you also have to import movies from Europe if you're in North America because most studios stopped bothering with NA releases.

Some studios are still clinging like Warner and Universal, but others have abandoned putting out North American SKU's like Disney (their last one was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as a Best Buy Exclusive Steelbook with the 4K version included as well), and even then some offerings can be weird, like a few Disney and Pixar films were only put out on Blu-ray 3D internationally (including Frozen, Big Hero 6, I think Ratatouille also). It's gone in a similar direction to Laserdisc, it's pretty much understood with the hardcore collectors that they have to import to get what they want. The same is true for the super-rich fuckers who got an Auro3D setup, there's only like 10 or so movies you can get with Auro3D and you have to import from very random territories (usually Germany, although Blade Runner 2049 you have to get from Poland).

Holy poo poo I remember Graal

Anyway your list seems pretty rational to me. GW1 was real good and I'd probably still go back and play CoH sometimes if I could. Maybe I'll give DFO a shot sometime--it definitely looks like it has a unique take on the action-MMO concept.

Just know that DFO is a korean mmorpg and its endgame stuff has a lot of raid type poo poo where you're expected to gear up in specific ways and team up with others in specific ways to kill stuff better. I love the game but I was never any good with raids and I did better with the main story PvE stuff where I could just run through a dungeon a couple of times and press my hotkeys to make cool animations go off and watch the enemies explode into meat chunks.

Aw hell that's exactly it.

I vaguely remember being unimpressed by the first HD TVs I saw in stores and I thought they were a waste of money, and now my stupid eyes can point out exactly when a game with adaptive resolution drops below 1080p for even a few seconds. It's a goddamn curse.

Side note, but at this point my track record on which new technology will catch on is so bad that I'd recommend everyone bet on the opposite of what I think. I thought iPhones were dumb (who'd want to do everything on a touch screen?), then years later I thought iPads were dumb (it's just a big iPhone!), and, uh, let's just say that didn't bear out.

Yeah that's fine. I never really get into MMO endgames that much anymore.

Does it do that classic Korean MMO thing where you need to power up your equipment, but beyond a certain level there's a chance that the powering up process will gently caress up and you'll lose all the resources and/or maybe even lose all the powering-up progress you've done so far? That one used to be everywhere.

YUP

but thankfully it's like... well here's a chart.

On top of that, you can get reinforcement tickets through events (and probably the cash shop, I haven't checked that in a while) that'll guarantee reinforcement up to a certain level, as well as some that'll safeguard against the breaking so it'll just go down to +0 instead. Reinforced stuff at that high of a bonus only matter for those endgame raid things iirc.

The real upgrade is in HDR. Which not a lot of content supports, but the games and movies that do support it look pretty beautiful. It's a night and day difference over normal 1080p or normal native 4K.

HDR is a hella-weird thing since yeah it looks better but then so does just getting a better TV that does SDR colors better, not sure where the line is. And I suspect on a PC the smart thing to do might be to play stuff at a lower resolution with the effects turned up (like 1440p or even 1080p) as well as HDR, instead of trying to run stuff in true 4K. What also drives this is if you want movies/TV that's watchable anywhere that pretty much means you need an SDR copy as well, you can't "just" have an HDR copy (HDR->SDR isn't an automatic conversion thing).

And then UHD Blu-ray's have the whole issue of typically being simpler in nature at this stage (e.g. in a few cases they'll only have a single version of a movie while the Blu-ray will have them all).

With the really messy availability of UHD Blu-ray I think I'm just going to get a 4K Apple TV since I have an extensive library of stuff from years of digital codes and beefy enough internet for it, and those by default give me the SDR versions as well.

The biggest game-changer for me recently has been G-Sync as it completely smoothes out the stuttering and screen tearing normally associated with oscillating between fractions of your monitor's native refresh rate. You don't need to target 60fps in every possible area of the game anymore since it can perfectly transition to a slightly lower framerate without losing visual fidelity. It's still hella expensive though.

I had decided a few years ago that I wanted to go with Amazon digital for my video library. They have yet to upgrade to 4K video which is frustrating because I prefer digital movies over physical, but I already have a large Amazon library and I feel like switching over to another service such as Apple for buying movies would be annoying.

Yeah, iTunes was an easier choice in Canada since it's practically the only choice, and by the time other services started offering things here they were mostly inferior (no extras, stereo only, no language/subtitle options while iTunes almost always gives you English and French here at least), and then free upgrades to 4K was just awesome, especially since that means a lot of titles will go on sale for like 7 bucks or have digital codes in a regular Blu-ray version on clearance somewhere for like 4 or 5 bucks.

Still it would be nice for 4K in general for the catalog to expand, very few movies older than the Obama administration on the format, and I think only 3 non-American films, one of which was a movie mastered at 1080p anyway.

4k has become the new smart TV in that it's pretty much is the standard hardware-wise in newer mid-range tv's now, even if its actual utility is questionable

straight 1080p is only available in the cheapest models and tends to come with a lot of other faults besides
