I guess my next question would be have any other of the old classes gotten reworks that are worth looking into? I don't recall others being in dire need of any but mostly just curious.

It definitely felt that way--I'd never been that far in that campaign before and was going in completely blind, so when I busted the door open and had two unique giants ready to rumble I rushed one as quick as I could... and then more started showing up shooting steam guns and all sorts of chaos broke loose. It was crazy tense and probably my most memorable sequence in ToME in all my playtime, basically body-blocking ranged attacks with my grapple targets and trying to wring every last mote of use out of all of my cooldowns that I could.

Also the new dungeon is pretty unforgiving. I managed to beat it once as a writhing drem because it starts with runes instead of infusions, but then I got mercilessly killed by the arena quest in that one starting town. And that's usually a freebie. :negative:

Is it possible to leave, do a different starter dungeon, then come back later? What are the rules for that?

you have one thousand turns after leaving the starting town to return and enter the maggot

the timer stops ticking when you're in (but presumably resumes if you beam out to town)

You can beam out and go level in one of the starter zones yeah. Keep an eye on the thousand turn timer. If it's low (200 or so) beam back into town and jump inside the maggot. It'll reset the timer which let's you play a game of beam out->level->beam in->enter maggot->rest to reset teleport->beam out->level->repeat.

Yeah, the Fanged Collar. When you die, it gives you a choice and if you take it it respawns you instantly with monster head.

Now that other people in the discord have also messed with it, I've also learned that if you have a racial tree, you keep it but can't put more points into them. I'd assumed it was like the die-and-turn-undead prodigy, so that's probably really dope (Yeek +18% gspeed, parasite +25%?).

This is my guy if you wanna check the racials. Shield doesn't scale amazingly, same with the bite's hot.

Sooooo use it on a class with amazing racials, like skeletons or something?

E: There's an addon called Undead Heritage that recognizes the fact that undead used to be not-dead and were presumably some other race back then, so it gives you a button to select a race you used to be and gain access to its tree. Obviously this is a massive generic sink, but... Skeletal Ogre Headcrab Writhing One, anybody? :p

With the new DLC, if there's anything you guys want me to add to the OP, just let me know! I don't play ToME much anymore (yay grad school) but I try to keep tabs on the thread and to not be too much of an absentee OP. Or if anyone wants to take over, I'm happy to pass along the raw text for the first couple posts in a pastebin to make life easy.

Also, new DLC probably warrants a new thread title, so if anyone's got good ideas, post em!

Give him good shielding and regen infusions(he will use them automatically as needed), keep his gear as up to date as you can manage without compromising your own, and make sure to invest in Shared Insanity(because the bonus applies to him, too).

This will keep him around for longer. He's still going to explode semi-regularly, especially early game when you don't have any of that stuff and late game when you fight extremely nasty stuff, but you can pop him out mid combat if he dies for 40 sanity and a turn which is usually enough to keep your shared insanity buff going for a whole fight.

A PSA regarding the Arcane Might prodigy and the Writhing One class: While it does add an additional 50% Magic stat modifier to the tentacle offhand like you might hope, the prodigy has the side effect of breaking bump attacks. The tentacle will not be used in bumps, so no offhand damage, cleave or Insanity generation results.

The prodigy does make all your abilities that utilize the tentacle hit much harder so it's probably still a net gain, but be warned.

Having a hell of a time, given that Writhing One seems to have a really rough start, along with the fact that the game keeps crashing on startup unless it loads with the Embers of Rage splash screen

Well. Found the new ring that gives you a free prodigy in exchange for summoning an invincible horror that'll follow you around forever on every floor of every dungeon, effectively making auto rest and autoexplore unusable. You're supposed to be able to take it off when you're out of combat but it seems to be busted cuz nothing counts as out of combat anymore. :(

That makes some twisted measure of sense, at least. "You said I could take this ring off when I was out of combat!" "You're doomed to be pursued eternally by an invincible monster trying to kill you. When did you think you wouldn't be in combat under those circumstances?"

Jawnycat
Jul 9, 2015
I've always gotten a code from the zone lore there, and I want to say it's not random? Not sure though, as I've only gotten three characters to the egress so far. It just feels like it's been the same code for that one. The code for the drem unlock area has been different tho.

Found another code in the wild tho, during a map encounter, one glyph in each corner of the map. Putting it in after figuring out the order made all map patrols permanently slower, so that's neat.

Also, there are new 'trees' in the mark of the spellblaze, like a dozen or so per screen, and they each can lead to their own mini-dungeons, and one of the plentiful rares in them always seems to drop three random uniques. Been getting allot of good gear by 'tree'hugging.

I only got one character to the egress, so I don't really know if the code or the zone it takes me to is random, but the zone was a desert zone with a random looking name, kind of like the far portal zones. But do I need to recall out?

You have to equip, apply infusions/runes and put points in his talents manually, but apart from that he is pretty low maintenance, uses blindside to close gaps and uses all cooldowns he has.
Just be careful not to equip him with stuff that deals AOE damage or causes diseases since he does not care about friendly fire and being a reaver he spreads diseases (even to you) just by hitting stuff. I thought equipping him with two blightbringer weapons would be smart because casting epidemic on hit means more corrupted strength procs, but getting a 50 damage dot and -80% healing mod every fight was just not worth the modest damage increase.

Level CON to the cap (60 CON) make a Lifebinding Emerald + Petrified Wood amulet (+40 CON), go for all the constitution-boosting quest and escort rewards (from which you can probably get another 5-10 if you're lucky), add a Crystal Plating tinker to the armor itself (+10 CON) and you can probably get the rest from good rings or belts.

Just in case anyone else gets the idea to try and brute force some of the Egress codes I spent an hour trying them all and the only portal that opened was with the code I had seen from the lore page when you enter.
The only other things that happened with it were 2 relic spawns and a randart.

I guess this means you have to 'see' the code for it to work.
