I'm pretty sure about the only thing seperating Derek Smart from Chris Roberts is relative success and possibly charisma, and there's absolutely an alternate universe where it's Chris Roberts who briefly had mod powers before a ridiculous flameout from an inability to understand rules.

Yea that's such an internet thing, like, the star citizen people are obviously terrible on there own and provide plenty of reasons to dislike them, why bother manufacturing more reasons. Mainly, I suppose, for the more lonely people to get that brief glee in seeing your post get quoted with your hot new information to feel like you're having a meaningful social interaction in this 2018 hell scape world. Some people take it really personally that by all accounts it seems like these people are going to get away with scamming mentally ill weirdos out of millions of dollars. I can't even really blame them for crusading for "what's right" in a lot of cases cause yeah that fuckin sucks and if it were about anything other than a video game there's be huge social media campaigns and all that. Some people just embraced Derek's "no-holds-barred, gently caress-you-if-you-step-to-me" style, and some people just really like how SA has been turned into the "anti star citizen boogeyman" on places like reddit. The other thing that's tricky is that because so many people found their way here from reddit or the Star Citizen official forums, saying "don't touch the poop" is kind of meaningless, because they've been living in the poop forever. So that slapfight they're having on reddit is not just something for the thread to laugh at, but then you get someone like Derek who goes "Oh that fucker? Yeah I remember him from when I was posting there, hold on, here's his Mom's address" or whatever lol. Which isn't to say Derek was the source of all the creepy posting - there's always weirdos on the internet - but he definitely made it easier for some goons to stare too long into the abyss, I think.

Also I have never backed Star Citizen, but I've been following this trainwreck for the past couple months just for the entertainment value. Although also I legitimately would very much like to see this giant scam crash and burn. $700 "micro-transactions" for DLC that doesn't exist yet in a game sold on lies. Star Citizen may more than prove the old adage "fools and their money are soon parted", but I'd still like to see the charlatans who have gotten rich off of it suffer some sort of legal retribution. I know they won't though. That happens because they receive or see others receiving positive reinforcement for engaging in that behaviour on a smaller scale and it escalates over time. People who cross the lines get called creeps, but those who manage to just about stay on the right side of the line are thread superstars for posting "content", even when there's only a faint line separating the two. That's what's happening with G0RF right now, where he's being congratulated on every 10,000 word ~*deep analysis*~ he posts instead of being told to shut the gently caress up and go outside.

I recently watched an episode of Black Mirror where some super-autist trapped clones of his coworkers inside a VR game that was pretty much just the matrix but for Star Trek nerds. The whole time i was laughing because it was literally what Star Citizen claims its going to be. Complete with tiny minute details that no sane person could ever care about. At the end the mega-autist fails to disconnect his brain from the game before an update breaks all his mod files and he dies IRL. Meanwhile the digital clones of his coworkers escape onto a public server and try to communicate with a normal player and the player immediately trash talks them and tells them to go gently caress themselves.
