KISS ME KRIS

Deathwing trip report: My grand scheme of adulting while waiting for the inevitable 0day patch to deploy was undermined by a freak power outage. So I got to play through the first level while waiting for the patch to pull. It was pretty good but rough in spots. If you're a fan of the genre of squad style FPS with milspec, it might not be as full featured but familiar. Lore nerds might yell about the psygate mechanic.

I felt the tutorial wasn't quite as fleshed out as it should be. Some of the map operations were mostly trial and error.

The weapons didn't feel big enough. Bolt rounds explode when they hit. Their part of the bigger strategy with Space Marines. They push foes back so they can organize a firing line then use their heavy armor and explodey bullets to herd enemies into kill boxes for artillery strikes or straight fuckin executions. These felt like I was throwing solid slugs down hallways.

Squad ordering was clunky but no single player game will be able to match the Star Wars Clone Trooper game, where they built putting your dudes into the right spots as part of the story. This felt more like trial and error. Plus because of the nature of the xenos you put down, hard point fighting just doesn't work.

The atmospherics are fuckin awesome. You're on a space hulk, its scary as poo poo. Steam and spooky poo poo everywhere. I shot a few things from cheap jump scares, which was pretty good.

Monsters are scary, the genestealers move like hordes of teethy murdery murder things. They don't react getting shot as much as I'd like but they do kind flail over so you can pin them, but there's so many its hard to capitalize. Good stuff, felt like I was fighting water out of a faucet.

I'm pretty surprised you managed to parse what was going on. A first playthrough as a Malkavian seems... just confusing as gently caress.

It was! The overall plot and motivations made sense but I had no clue what was going on with the Kue Jin. The entirety of Chinatown was confusing. I think I accidentally sided with them? I'd be walking along and suddenly I'd be taking to a stop sign, or I would hear the tv warn me about an upcoming ambush, it was super surreal especially since I had no clue to expect it. I had heard a friend talk about it and I thought it was just Deus Ex But Vampires. It's an experience I'm glad I had but I don't think I'd recommend it for a first time for others.

I'm playing Yakuza 0. I spent 45 minutes trying to win a dumb dinosaur thing with a top hat. I finally win the thing, then decide to have one more go and try to grab an iguana looking thing. I accidentally pick up another dinosaur in a top hat.

Also I have a bunch of model race car parts in my inventory I have no idea where I got them from or what to do with them.

Pretty cool game.

As a non-American I still can't wrap my head around how your healthcare system "works", it's utterly insane.

Last year my girlfriend, who has no insurance, went to the ER and got a contrast test and zofran for what wound up being just hell's worst case of food poisoning. They stuck her with a $20,000 bill. For two months, we tried to call and negotiate the ludicrousness of this and they stonewalled us to the point of ceasing to pick up our calls. When we engaged a medical cost advocate, the hospital abruptly discovered a 50% discount "for living in the same zip code we do business in." The advocate described that kind of situation as "really distressingly ordinary." Her pay was 20% of whatever amount we saved.

Everything about American healthcare is a god damned nightmare and anyone who says it's not is insane.

When I still lived in the US, I refused to go to the doctor's unless there were severe problems, and even then I kinda avoided things. My employer only gave us those awful, awful health care saving plans and I wasn't making enough to either pay for my own care or save up for preventative features. And dental care is even worse because even if your health plan does cover it (which is not all the time), it's only for a fraction of the cost and you're still expected to pay for the bulk of it, which runs between hundreds and thousands of dollars.

When I came to Japan though, I was able to fix my teeth for almost nothing and every health issue that arises can be easily taken care of for non-catastrophic prices. The only problem I have with it is that Japan has a paranoid belief about pain medication to where the strongest thing they'll prescribe is something that's available over-the-counter anyway, and even that's weak compared to, say, Excedrin. Japan's system is both public and private. It would be a perfect system for Americans to migrate to, but, I still heard weirdos complain about socialism when I explained it to them.

I did have to use the NHS once for a blood infection and I have to say, the hospital I was admitted to in Solihull (outside of Birmingham) was kind of frightening and I'm guessing it got torn down and replaced in the subsequent years.

We let the hospitals set the prices.
Which is like letting people charge for air.
Because we worship money and the wealthy are our gods.

I got a 60 dollar bill for a specialist visit 2 years after the fact. As best I can tell my insurance spent 2 years negotiating the price and 60 bucks is what I'm saddled with? I really don't even know.

I have a friend whose partner is American and moved countries to live with her, and he hurt his ankle really badly so she wanted to take him to the hospital to get it looked at. He burst into tears and said he couldn't let her blow all their hard-earned savings like that and he'd just have to live with the (agonizing) pain till the end of his life or until it got better by itself, whichever came first. She had to explain to him that almost everywhere else in the world you go to the hospital and they fix you up and at worst you get a relatively minor bill while the rest of it is taken care of by the Government since they have an active interest in a healthy population (and this is also part of what everybody pays taxes for in the first place!).

The fact that vision and dental are fuckin comped gratis "hey thanks for being a US citizen" is loving baffling to me. Bad teeth leading to painkiller addiction is something I see a lot.

I guess its that "hey thanks" part that the government doesn't get. I mean they're already doing the circus part, they might as well give us some bread.

Deathwing playthrough update: Still fun the but friendly AI is really dang bad. There's this spot where the autogun dude has to dick with a console for a few minutes. Its up on this raised bridge dealie but you can jump down on the sides. Which is dumb to do because the bridge acts as a natural funnel. Which is exactly what doctor dude is doing. So I order him back up to the spot, figure he'll stick there. Big Nope. This dude is loving determined to die in the tactically stupidest spot of the drat map. Which sucks because there's a nasty monster thing that really needs concentrated firepower to down. I dunno, I'll try it with an autogun or a flamer and see if that helps.

The main menu has this really swag customization menu but none of it applies to the solo game, which is hella wack. Half the fun of being the pointy stick for the deceased son of the uber facist to end all fascists is playin paper dolls.

Anyway, I'm gonna smoke some weed and read more Shadowrun short stories because I don't think I was nerdy enough today. If you do ibooks there's short collection up for 99 cents.

My wife had back surgery 2 years ago and looking at the insurance breakdown of all the charges were insane. $150,000 for 4 days in the hospital. The insurance company only payed $60,000. We payed $200. The rest just disappeared. Every other line-item for the procedure was just as bad. 3 months after the fact we got a bill for $5,000 from the anesthesiologist because they were 'out of network', which we were not informed of at the time, and didn't even get a choice in who the anesthesiologist was. It took 4 months of phone calls and letters before it was thankfully cleared up and we didn't have to pay anything. We ended up owing a total of about $6,000, which we're paying off $25 a month for probably forever.

This is all for a procedure that if my wife didn't get it, she'd be paralyzed from the waist down in 5 years.

The American healthcare system is fundamentally broken, and Republicans have done such a good job poisoning the idea of making any improvements to it that I feel like in 50 years we're going to be an entire country either crushed by medical debt, or with a life expectancy in the mid-40s.
