However it seems I can't fight the postgame boss in the pocket of distorted time...There's just nothing there and all I got was a lore. What a bummer. :\

I played Tome a little five years ago (adventurer on normal wins with Oozemancer, Summoner, and Solipsist) but just picked it back up. After getting to the prides with a badly-played Archer on normal I decided to try Nightmare with a better-played archer. Losing a character at level 45 feels absolutely loving terrible.

edit: Only two of my deaths along the way were random 100-0 instadeaths from solo mobs, the others were me being super dumb. Maybe next time. :smithicide:

Finally coming back around to ToME (been around 2 years since I last played seriously). Unfortunately, I'm getting horrible hanging issues, where every so often the game locks up entirely for around 5-10 seconds. Sometimes I can play for a few minutes with no trouble, and sometimes it hangs five times inside a minute.

Anyone have any similar issues, or know what might cause it? My best guess would be some probably outdated addons from way back when, but I haven't had the chance to mess with them much yet.

Also the posts about the gunless psyshot make me want to remake my totally passive character that just ambles through the world and everything dies around him :unsmigghh:

ive done it with cornac. your basic strategy to fight anything is to hit it with condensate and superconduction and then if its not dead with solidify air. then you run away if its even more not dead.

4/4/4/0 action at a distance 1/1/0/0 psionic fog and 1/1/0/0 gestalt is priority, after that you can do whatever you fuckin want because you do insane damage and have instant mobility+heal. you probably want 5/1/3/1 in thoughts of iron. mechstar is skippable compeltely. you want 5/1/3/0 in avoidance also with your first cat point, and 3/0/0/0 dread with your second. gear priority is like fire pen, fire damage, all resist, hp lightning pen lightning resist mindpower.

i play on insane+ am very stupid so i spend my cornac free cat point on blacksmith and get 1/1/5/0 so you are never allowed to be on fire because thats just a really really strong thing. also buy mindstar asap and go antimagic and try to get windtouched speed prodigy

good tinkers are mosstread set to autocast whenever available because it gives you a shield and gives you psi and it costs 5 steam and is instant. also the light the ground on fire on bump tinker for weapons, also the belt tinker that makes you do more fire damage

So I should hold off on getting the arms until 20? What stats should I focus focus on? I ended up splitting it even in wil and cun.

I was playing a Krog Cursed and it was going pretty well but then I had to fight a rare Sawbutcher as well as some other random rare and I just got completely destroyed. Not really Cursed specific, by I like to hold on to one of each kind of torque (Kinetic, Thermal, Charged) just in case I run into a particularly nasty elite like you've encountered. A good Kinetic will hopefully mitigate the bulk of the Sawbutcher damage sent your way, and if your target isn't dead after the 7 turn duration you should be able to retreat until the cooldown is up again. Zigur and Shatur (the wood elf town) both have torque shops.

Space out your healing appropriately -- an ideal situation would be to use a Regen infusion to start and tank the damage, then activate the torque to cancel out damage, and then use your Regen again as the mitigation shield fades. But if this pair of bad guys are bastards you may need to use both at the same time just to stand toe-to-toe at all, at which point liberal use of hit-and-run tactics will be key. Rampage is a great tool for this, but be careful not to accidentally aggro too many other enemies as you wait for your cooldowns.

I still play on the normal roguelike difficulty and die all the time even with a hundred or so hours. I don't think I understand this game in a basic way - gearing, debuffs, etc. At the very least, I think I need a small guide on these basics to get me up to speed. For the most part I just throw on whatever gear "seems better" or appears to work with my build and I just don't think it's working out.

Quack
Most of my games are on Normal Adventure, it feels decently challenging all the same for my playstyle at 300 hours in.

Getting better at the game I feel comes down to grabbing and using scouting abilities as much as humanly possible, inspecting every Rare creature you come across so they don't surprise you with a sudden Sustain removal ability or Resist ignoring attack (I find this a bit too tedious and interrupts the flow spending a half a minute looking at talent trees for each rare creature and this ignorance and lazyness does get me killed at times). If you end up facing something you absolutely can not kill at this time or potentially ever, bypass or otherwise avoid it, quarantine the entire area if needed.

Having atleast 3 or 4 GET THE HELL OUT abilities at all times, a few Damage reduction torques and/or alternate resist gear on hand is always a good thing too. Sometimes spending a Category point on another Infusion/Rune is worth more than the potential gains of a new tree of abilites to invest in, especially if nothing is grabbing your attention or you feel your incoming levels skill points are as good as invested already, depends on the class/race really.

Getting Immunities to Status effects is usually incredibly high on my To-Do list. Stun and Confusion can screw heavily with your Get out abilities and are awful in general. Blindness is annoying but you can sometimes just deal with it or Teleport away. The other status effects can be worth looking out for but are more annoying than lethal in my games.

Until you reach the very end of the game you usually have the option to just back away and come back when you are more prepared as well, explore some more areas, look in the shops, upgrade your Infusions/Runes, maybe rearrange your last spent skill points.

A thing I keep forgetting is that I can dig through walls and create choke points in that way that I can always run back to.

They do an absolutely bugfuck insane amount of damage, they don't suffer from very much multiple attribute dependency, the Reflexes tree is unbelievably powerful defensively(seriously, Sentinel is disgusting), and generally just have no actual weaknesses. It's not any particular silver bullet that makes them so powerful; they're just brutally powerful in general.

Here are the tips that took me from Normal to beating the game on Nightmare:

1. Don't open vaults unless you're owning super hard. This goes double for Dreadfell.
2. Don't ever disrespect trash.
3. Don't go in the dark crypt unless you're really confident in yourself.
4. Bpat's inscription guide and Cathbald's inscription guide.
5. If a fight doesn't seem to be going your way, just leave and reset.
6. Always remember where the stairs are.
7. You need a Track-like ability from an escort, item, or a talent. Use it before opening most doors.
8. A rough stat priority for most classes: stun resist > confusion resist > armor > physical/spell/mindpower (depending) > life > damage and pen > spell/phys/mind crit (depending) > crit mult. Saves are garbage stats.
9. You can always take back your last three general points and class points in town (they are counted separately). You can take advantage of this to put points into an early nuke that you don't intend to use later, take the points out when you get back to town, and spend them on new abilities you actually want.

If you kill the game process you can go back to your old autosave - which is usually just before you used a transition. You can use this to reroll floors, escorts, vaults and treasure chests, or save yourself if some bs rando boss is about to kill you.

Things like this are why I prefer normal over nightmare. If I can't leeroy my way into vaults then what is even the point.

My advice for Poultron would be to play some Cursed. It's a class that strongly encourages aggressive hit and run tactics which 1) is really fun, and 2) forces you to learn when to fight and when to run. The latter being pretty much the most important lesson you need to learn in this game.

Vaults aren't more dangerous on Nightmare, and are straight-up safer than normal on Insane since rares / randbosses can't spawn in vaults. Open all the vaults you want.

Finally got my nightmare archmage win. I am far too careless to play that class effectively at low to mid game lol but with all the fire damage increasing gear, the speed increasing sustain, Harmony etc you end up making GBS threads out an absurd amount of damage at ludicrous speed. I don't think I ever really worked out the best shield rotation for maximum EHP but it didn't matter too much.

Final bosses went down pretty easily thanks to dispel and stone wall, the fight ended somewhat farcically with me and Argoniel exhaustedly chasing each other round a pillar hitting each other with our staves and occasionally squeezing out a cantrip until she fell over.

Now for the polar opposite - brawler time

I'm not saying Cursed is a strong class by any means(even though it's my favorite), just that it teaches good gameplay habits. The exception being CC since that works automatically through Gloom.

The hit and run balance you need to learn to make Cursed work will serve you well with other melee classes.

Vaults tend to have much higher level enemies than the surrounding floor and many of them force you to fight a lot of dudes at once, so they can be pretty murderous to a suboptimal build. Plus you have the occasional "dig through walls vault" where you dig into a chamber and whoops there's two multi-hued wyrms and a multi-hued drake and they all breathed the turn the wall came down. I mean I open every vault I find before High Peak anyway, but it's probably safer not to early on.

Cursed is so weak by the current power standards of the game that it's almost a challenge class. I guess it can teach you good gameplay habits(because you have to work very hard to overcome the gaping limitations of the class), but I don't think a new player is going to have a lot of fun playing one compared to exploding things as a brawler or a doombringer or something.
