Look at it, pretty much. It's a Toyota Space Van but it has the Mitsubishi symbol on the front and a diesel engine. Not in my experience. Suzuki Caras are way beyond AZ-1s in terms of cost from every auction I've seen. I remember hearing that there were only a few hundred Caras made vs. the sub-5k AZ-1s. Identical sure but one says Suzuki on it :confused:

Depends, kei trucks and vans don't have a simple plate like usdm cars. The vin will be stamped in about 8 places on different permanent parts of the car. At least going through the Tacoma WA port they will check five of those vins (some stamped and painted, some etched, some molded, etc). I don't know how other ports operate.

Also not that I think a Goon would do something lovely like that but remember the statute of limitations for Customs Fraud is unlimited (explained to me by the customs officers).

Like Garbageman said the chassis code is stamped all over on various parts of the car so I suppose you could try to trick someone but afaik an AZ-1 = Cara so there is no real reason to have one over the other besides owning an Autozam or a Suzuki. That and the codes stamped on the chassis and body panels wouldn't match your Cara metal plate.

Dunno man, look up 'Vanlife Northwest' and they are charging more for their Delicas and Hiaces. It's just like anything, one person wants a Harley, another wants a Ford Raptor, the other wants a JDM Delica.

Super clean and excellent condition automatic transmission Pajero (diesel of course), 1990 with four dang doors #wow. Spotless and everything is working, currently on it's third timing belt from 2013 at 180000 km. Picked up for a $4500. Departure because this is now the largest vehicle I will have imported and an automatic.

I am ina self-imposed ban right now as I have fully paid for my Majesta and even though I have 2 deposits on file I’m not even looking until they confirm my wire is all good and the car is at the port in Japan. I’ve had some stress as to whether I am doing the right thing but I am definitely looking for a side niche so we will see how it goes.

It's hard not to just keep rolling the money over and over again and again. Make a sale, buy two cars. Sell those, buy four. Like I'm not out any more money that I put in originally. Easier now to move up in the market too, if you would have asked me a couple months ago if I were going to buy not one but two AZ-1s I woulda been doubtful. If you would have told me one of them I'd buy on speculation because of Jay Leno's garage I'd probably laugh yet here we are :v:

One owner Jimny with 30000 miles, 100% clean, stock, unmolested and in excellent shape. Plus it has my favorite bits: side graphics that say 'EPI TURBO'

Extremely similar to this one that was on BaT although blue in color, the one I bought has working AC, a little less miles and the one on BaT has the altimeter gauge cluster. The BaT one seems to have a bit of bubbling under some paint too, icky.


I've now done exactly what I did last month. Buy an AZ-1, Pajero, then Jimny.

I hate to be that guy but results will vary wildly . I am on the opposite spectrum, we are stuck on our second batch of imports (boat landed in middle february) and they still have not been registered. Problem is that Oregon is a state run DMV and has decided that they do not want to plate these cars because "reasons". So I will only be able to sell in Washington (however my city is in the metropolitan area of Portland, so naturally all the interest is from Oregon buyers). Now I have to go get an attorney to get the Oregon DMV to realize that they cannot make up and interpret law.

I would say do a ton of research ahead of time, call your DMV see if they are somewhat familiar with these vehicles. Ask them what the process is, if they have registered a foreign car before, etc. Domestic buyers that I have encountered are afraid of a car with no state registration so you will likely have to do it, don't run into the same problem I have of a poo poo head state over stepping itself.

My surprise is more that there are people willing to pay that amount of money... I get the premium for rare cars or things you simply can't get on this side of the ocean, but Samurais and Monteros and even 4runners are out there.

80s and early 90s vehicles are what a lot of people in their 30s now grew up riding in. Unfortunately a lot of those vehicles are rusted right out and in need of a lot of chassis and body work. In NA people have always been willing to pay a premium for a clean (or cleanish) example of an older vehicle.

What's more is that these Jimnys aren't our Samurais, based sure, but the Jimny Sierra is the JDM Samurai, with the wider set wheels and 4 cyl engine. I don't know what kei Jimnys are like to drive being turbocharged and all so they might be exactly like USDM Samurais. Have you see prices for not-hosed Samurais lately? Assuming you can find one they approach 10k anyway. A JDM turbo one with neato stripes and a high-roof pushes the price up higher. That BaT one does have rust which is hosed but ??? Bring a Trailer is a strange place.

I find that when someone buys a car from me they are 'grabbed' by it. Someone might just be browsing around but once they physically come see whatever it is I have that they are interested in they take ownership of it as soon as they see it, as in they want to 'save' it before someone else gets it. Lapses in conversation with the buyer looking at whatever car it is and simply blurting out "I love it". Not always of course, but the sorts of buyers I see are people that are wanting whatever it is well beyond practicality. The guy that bought the 83 Acty van I had was a 60~ year old Puerto Rican dude that's a (head?) mechanic guy at a Porsche dealership. The guy that bought the 90 Acty was a gun shop owner that just loved it (he bought his son the J70 Land Cruiser) and dailies a Tesla Model X. The 83 Hijet I had was sold to a dude that owns this huge arborist outfit. Guy that bought the Rugger was this young kid from Georgia that was specifically looking for "something RHD and diesel" who also happens to have a collection of odd Duesenbergs. And the Liteace van is a super-tatooed-and-piercing dude into Gwar from the Miami area that makes giant foam costumes.

It's easy for me to empathize with that desire for these things too since that's why I brought them over in the first place, because there was something there that made me want them. I drive all of these too (probably not going to be able to keep up if inventory keeps ballooning) so when people ask me about a specific car I can fire back an answer immediately. I also don't try to him and haw about any issues that a car might have, I lay out that poo poo flatly because I want people to be happy. I guess what I'm really saying is the people that are buying these are chasing an emotion, and that has no limit.

I have no idea who Mitch McConnell is, but yeah, that seems like total bollocks. The thing is, stuff that's 25+ years old and specialist is hardly a threat to domestic manufacturers, which comes with the implication that it's not meant to be protectionism wrapped in whatever seems convincing, they actually believe this poo poo.

I agree, no one is cross shopping a 2018 F-150 and a 1991 Subaru Sambar.

I tell everyone who looks at these, "kei trucks are not safe if you hit someone" and they all don't seem to care. So that part is true. But emissions wise they emit way less than the federal requirements (Oregon is more strict and they pass those), most have cats, rhd is easy as poo poo, they all have seat belts, all have vin (just not that stupid plate on windshield), you can put DOT tires on the vehicle, the whole light thing is a joke, windshield I cannot comment on the difference (or non difference). Fuel tank on the outside is a lie, none of them could even be confused as "outside the frame rails".

It is frustrating for sure, I will get off my soapbox. Just take it as a heads up to people who want to start bringing in a bunch of these things, do all your homework first.

Kaker being in Florida makes it much, much easier. Florida will title anything with wheels. My favorite example was in college, I'd see guys at autocross driving a (literally) burned-out Subaru Outback with no doors or body panels left. They bought new headlights and taillights and it had fresh plates with registration stickers on it. It's never surprised me, the amount of both legit and shady import operations there are in Florida.

Coolest thing about my dad's 1988 Toyota Pickup longbed was the stripe decals on the cab and bed. If I ever put a oem-style bed on mine it has to get the decals.

In all seriousness, I wonder what put the bug up his rear end about this? What harm, in the grand scheme of things, could allowing these cars in possibly bring? We pretty much all understand that an old car is not going to be as safe as a new car.
I'd also like to point out that any study from the UK regarding LHD vs RHD vehicle incidents needs to take into account that most likely most of the incidents are the people from LHD countries driving on unfamiliar RHD roads, not necessarily the fact that the car is LHD. I wonder if the Canadian study factors in the likelihood that most of RHD imports there are :fastandfurious: (dammit, where the hell is that smilie?) cars , and associated drivers thereof.

I've been told by the mailwoman who delivers to the last place I lived that Canada Post subsidizes at least part of the cost of a vehicle and recommends rural drivers use RHD imports or conversions. She didn't like RHDs and about half the time her husband rode along and did the actual box-stuffing from their Corolla's passenger window. She had a long grabby stick for the other half of the time.

E: When I lived in Kitchener, there was an intersection that was dangerous at the best of times and someone from across one pond or the other turned left into oncoming and did not survive. Was behind the wheel of a LHD vehicle, but had only been driving on the right side of the road for a week.

I think it might be easier with other imports, I am just working with kei's because my market is flooded with about 8 dealerships selling all the jdms but no Kei. I would call your DMV office and start asking questions, also probably dont call a branch just cut straight to the source and call the capitol DMV office they will know the most. Also being in Ohio might mean boom or bust , it seems the farther away from a RORO port you are the less competition. Don't let my story discourage you, just make sure you have a good idea of what is going to happen before you buy a bunch of cars.

Also if it helps , you do make really good money selling pretty much anything from Japan.

Okay, so here's what we do. We get the shittiest JDM scrapheap kei car at auction and the shittiest scrapheap plated and driving USDM car and then perform a 35mph crash test with Mitch McConnell behind the wheel whichever one he feels is safer.
