Yeah, it's worth remembering the shitstorm that occured when Greenlight added the $100 fee to be allowed to submit stuff. Even that was considered impressively exclusionary by the loudest people of the era and IIRC some folks like the Reckless Disregard For Gravity guy were actually offering to stump up the cash for folks who couldn't afford it.

Same, though I still got few Steam friends who haven't moved over to Discord.

I switched away from Steam year and half ago because their mobile app has been turbo unreliable since it released and Discord became a thing. Oof

There's kind of a fuzzy line in US obscenity laws on what is and what isn't obscenity, but I'm guessing Valve is going to continue to try and steer clear of any content that could cross that line.

Can't wait until steam is a wasteland of anime furry pornography to the point where the only filter that shows, you know, actual games is "AAA".

I can barely believe that they found a solution worse than the halcyon days of Greenlight. They lowered the barrier to entry too far.

At this point I kind of admire Valve's commitment to doing as little work as possible.

It reminds me a lot of Facebook in 2016. Deflect all criticism by positioning yourself as a platform instead of an company with real responsibilities, use crowdsourcing and algorithms to do the vast majority of your content creation/curation, and collect huge sums of money by monopolizing the market.

Valve was doing it before it was cool.

Valve not changing anything at all won't make Auschwitz Simulator 2018 any more of a commercial or socially viable product, guys. Games are made to get money. They don't grow on trees.

Yes please. I have 20,733 games seen on my queue and 20,630 as "Not Interested" and I still get tons of poo poo from the same sweatshop dev making GBS threads out "putin vs ISIS" asset flips.

I recall at least one indie game (I think it was indie, anyway?) having to delay their release date 24 hours or so because they forgot to factor in time for whatever the Valve-side review is. No matter how low the expectations are, people will fail to meet them.

I might have posted about it when I got to play it at PAX last year but I don't actually remember and it was almost a year ago and the game got delayed by a couple months from their intended release. Got to talk to the lead dev though and he is cool as heck, super nice, and his first question when he found out I was already a Bit.Trip.Runner fan was if I'd managed to finish the first game.

I seem to only get actual games (a quick check got me stuff like Wizard of Legend and FF15 along with some indie stuff like Muffled Warfare, but I "only" have 2100 or so games seen on my queue. Frankly, this thread and games sites are more useful than any algorithm can ever be, so I don't really use the queue so much.

Without question. As are good curators like Too Shy Guy's Gold-Plated Games. I like to stay on top of the queue because it's the best way to see what has been added to Steam recently and I do honest-to-god find some fun looking things in there like;

or

I don't think I'd have found either of them without sifting through the shitpile.

I, for one, am glad that valve are fully abdicating their responsibility to curate their store so that we can get thousands more titles like this:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/868970/Cut_The_ExGirlfriends/

https://store.steampowered.com/app/791540/Maybe_Drinking_Russian_Style/

https://store.steampowered.com/app/847660/Story_Heaven__Hell/

I mean, I could filter out those tags, but then I'd be filtering out Indie and Adventure.

Dead Cells and Immortal Redneck are my favorites rn of recent games. Both roguelites in the vaguely metroidvania ish and FPS genre respectively.

Using GOG for non-old games isn't necessarily a good idea, games tend to either miss features or vital patches for some reason or another.

Keep in mind that Valve have already have a bad reputation of not blocking "illegal" and "troll" content from their store.

https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/evkp3a/active-shooter-removed-from-steam-by-valve

Active Shooter should never have been on the store. The developer/publisher was banned from Steam in 2017, but of course Valve didn't think the guy would ever just set up a new company to get on steam.
