CIG has always hindered its community from negative self analysis. This is an important part of any community, it helps to establish good rules and good posting behavior and attitudes.

The problem with CIG though, and why they must stop this self analysis and self healing, is because people will see CIG for what they are, as well as the game. Their main game of "distract and retarget" has worked very well for them. Their iron grip of shutting down even a semblance of something negative has garnered a community of defenders to the cause, willing to go an extra mile because anything negative has been put into a harsh, "evil" light.

Being negative and introspective has also been demonized and personified as "goons" and "Derek Smart". And it's a good thing CIG chose those, because goons have a history of being goofy doofuses who do anything for lols and being mean to people, and Derek Smart has a history pre-dating goons at being a hateful person to anybody on the internet. These are the best things to focus your hate and blame for all problems on.

This persists because CIG and supporters or paid shills manage to shut down conversations either by force or by turning the agenda so hard the conversation crashes and burns before it can get too far. But they have to do this because if people are given enough free reign, they'll realize goons and Derek Smart aren't making the game be poo poo, nor are they making the community a vicious head game of evil people saying weird evil things over the dumbest and most pointless "slights" against it.

Sure people can come to SA anytime and see it for what it is, but they either won't, or don't care. So the perception of goons is the reality. We're evil and have been thwarted by the genius Chris Roberts for not somehow undermining his non-game, however that's supposed to work out in people's heads.

I kind of hope that Star Citizen comes out. Only because I want people to see it, play it, and realize that not only is it just a game, but that it will inevitably fall massively short of their enormous expectations, and the community itself will fizzle out. Not because of goons or Derek Smart, but because CIG is at the heart of this whole thing.

At some level, the backers know that CIG, in its present form, is not competent to deliver their dreams. But this is the thing that, above all things, they must not accept. So they lash out. They defend. The larger their inner heresies, the more aggressive and the more ludicrous the defense.

They also know that CIG knows it too. They know it by the silence about crucial, central issues.

So what do you have?

CIG is:
Multiple companies spread across the globe. Some of these companies have people working there, some of them do not. The biggest ones are apparently Foundry 42 in the UK, something in Hollywood and something in Texas.

You have had about 400 employees pretty constantly for about the past 3 years, possibly more.

Prior to that you had numerous contractors, including groups like Illfonic working on parts of the game.

You have a constant, non stop ramp of money gathering practices, where the numbers keep getting larger and larger.

You have a bank of about $200M known in vested money. Unknown amounts of loans or private investors.

At inception, Elite and Star Citizen were neck and neck for "who would come out first and be king". Elite came out 4 years ago, and is still receiving pretty healthy updates. Sure it's boring for a lot of people, but that tends to be the nature of games like this. Regardless, it's been out 4 years now.

Later, Star Citizen was neck and neck with the next space kid on the block, Call of Duty: Infinite War. CoD:IW released about 2 years ago.

Currently there is no other really large space game that is being compared to against Star Citizen, or if it will be a neck and neck race to see who is going to come out on top.

After all this time, a demo of Sq42 was shown (as a video, not released to the public to play), which featured a captured and enslaved and beaten woman who needs to be rescued by you as the end goal of the mission. This was CIG's choice of "introduce the world of Squadron 42 to you!" as.

CIG has made planetary landings a thing, which was done by No Mans Sky 2 years ago, and also by Elite 3 years ago with their Horizons expansion. You can drive a rover in Elite as well.

Star Citizen is now in competition with Duke Nukem Forever for release date qualifications. DNF took 15 years, and Star Citizen/Squadron 42 is now up to 7.

After 7 years, of the initially promised at-launch 100 star systems, currently only 1 is available and it does not feature everything it's supposed to have.

The "MMORPG" part, Star Citizen, is currently able to hold about 24 players per server. There is no interaction as promised between servers.

Currently, players are very upset with the performance of the game. Even on very good computers it performs sub-optimally. To counter this, CIG sent top of the line PCs to some streamers specifically to try to make their game look better.

CIG has introduced hardware people can buy that makes their game better, including a tie in with an SSD Intel Optane, which they sold like evangelists to their own backers. They are also marketing some sort of webcam, but this is not out yet. They also tried to do a keyboard and joystick pack with Mad Catz but apparently the company went out of business during the process.

There are some canned missions in the game, such as entering a level and pressing a button. The messages for different actors are said to the whole server, so for example if somebody is talking to an NPC somewhere else you may have that speech text flash on screen while you're in space flying away for a frame.

You can also attempt a delivery mission, but this is very buggy and more often than not fails to function to completion. There are multiple YouTube videos of people attempting this huge undertaking of "pick up and move a box from A to B". This is not shaping up to be Witcher 3 in space.

Attempting to land on a planet may not always work. You can land upside down, you can also bounce like a ball. You can also leap out of your ship and fall to the ground and be perfectly ok, sometimes. Actions and results seem to be very random, and the game does not really know what it is doing.

There is no female avatar.

You can choose your character appearance by selecting one of 6 pre made, non editable, male characters.

You can buy clothes. In fact, you can buy lots of things. You can buy $75 real money missiles. You can buy guns and space suit armors. You can buy $27000 space ship packages. You could say the one feature that works mostly well is the purchasing system on the webpage. CIG is also hard at work attempting to get buying kiosks into the game as well.

You can have a space battle, but it is not fun or easy or fruitful. There is no point to fight outside of wanting to. There is no piracy ability to steal cargo.

You can have a ground fight, and death means you resplendent inside the "wank pod" again, and may face up to a 15 minute travel back to the fight zone, possibly to die within seconds of arrival again.

Organizing multiplayer battles with friends is next to impossible.

You can move around a vending machine, but only your screen will show it. It is not persistent. This has become a meme itself because it was one of the few things people could interact with.

You can refuel and repair your ship.

When your ship is blown up, either by bugs or other players, you can experience a cool down timer mechanic before it will respawn, unless you pay money to shorten the timer.

In game money, of course, can be bought with real world money (bet you didn't expect that feature).

This is about all. This is what is considered as a better than most AAA game productions game. If you did everything and the game did not crash, there is about 2 hours of content, minus the "looking at 3D models" you can buy.

To recap, the game is currently 7 years old, and has over $200M in budget, with 3 direct studios CIG control directly working on it actively, with about 400 employees steady for about the last 2-3 years since "ramp up" operations were happening.

It is a non-functional physics equipped object. So people took to playing games with themselves by trying to ferry the object around like cargo in their ships to other places.

Oops, also yes. A considerable amount of interactions are handled client side. In fact, CIG has made a statement that they will ban cheaters even in the current state of the game if they are found to be abusing this mechanism. To do this though, as CIG does not have good logging it seems, the offended needs to make some kind of video of the offender as a submission.

I'm not sure if anybody has actually been banned for this yet.

You could assume, likely very correctly, that if Star Citizen ever releases it will be hacked immediately and these hackers will get a bit richer in real life so long as the grey market exists even a little bit.

The people making the game are so very distraught over just making a product that kind of sort of works that they are not including many things necessary for a real mmorpg to actually function, like client-server security and how the client has far too much trust currently.

It's possible that nobody on CIGs side even cares about this because the developers know the game isn't going to limp into being a real game where stuff like this needs to be seriously considered.

DNF was never really constantly worked on though. It was partially worked on, abandoned, then thrown away, over and over and over again. Eventually someone else bought the rights and just made it from scratch. So even though 15 years passed between the first man-hour spent on it, and the final delivery, it wasn't really 15 years of development.

Although there are some parallels with things getting refactored and reworked and thrown away etc., the core project for SC has been being worked on by CIG for the entire 7 years. I'm not sure which other game that puts it in true competition with, but what's most impressive to me is how little has been done. It's a lovely proof-of-concept that shows the concept doesn't work, and it has been for literal years. Every patch reveals an astounding lack of development progress, and what appears to be increasing amounts of instability as they attempt to stack more of the impossible on top of the abominable.

Also, meanwhile, as the game routinely gets sub 10's of FPS performance with a 24 player limit and no severs can see another server, Chris Roberts is also working at trying to add in a technology that will allow the webcam hardware you can buy to directly interact with your face. This will result in your in game character's expression matching that of your real world counterpart.

Somehow this is going to work in a game where it is already barely functional and doesn't have enough bandwidth to support itself, and your PC is basically crippled while playin it.

This is more important to Chris Roberts than making a fun game that works well and allows for a real mmorpg experience.
