That fight's scripted, since it's from the earliest teaser trailer from 2016. That Raven's either being "piloted" by another developer for the sake of a good show or it's on rails.

The game barely existed at the point that trailer was released, so that's pretty much the Star Citizen promo of MW5 footage.

It's still PGI we are talking about, and we are taking just glimpses of the big picture. That picture could be a decent game, or a poo poo heap. But so far it looks okay, and I'll stick with that until I actually get my hands on the game.

That Raven moved like it was a 200 ton mech. I'm salty because PGI has 0 experience with single player games and I would like Mechwarrior 5 to be good but I know it won't because all we've seen is what PGI has wanted us to see and even that looks bad from a gameplay perspective.

I guess they only had 4 usable mech assets when they made that video, cause that's a lot of Cata K2s being shot at in there. Plus that Raven and some Atlas/Shadowhawk sightings.

But yeah I guess I've played too much MWO to be grabbed by the sight of a Raven standing there and having a face-off with a medium. That's not how you use light mechs :argh:

You really, really want to work on those skill trees. They look overwhelming at first but for any given mech you can skip half of them, and usually even then you only want half of the skills within the trees that remain. If nothing else get the 10 points in sensors for 60% radar deprivation, it makes a huge difference between safely peeking over a hill versus eating a face full of LRMs.

They have less than 0 experience. They've spent years doing things wrong, with no testing, experimentation or input. A child would make a mistake once and figure out what happened and why. PGI is sitting firmly and comfortably on the top of mount idiot, and are happy to repeat stupid poo poo over and over. They *know* how it's supposed to be done, cause being retarded enables you to both read minds and see the future.

Thank you! I joined up in-game and on the discord; will be looking out for you lot there.

EDIT: What are good general rules to follow in skilling up? It's easy enough to make my one-trick ponies better at their one trick, but I don't really have a sense of how a 5% speed increase stacks up against a 5% increase in structure for a middle-of-the-road mech. Is it discretionary, or are there definite traps to avoid?

The skilltree is super easy once you get going, most mechs want the same skills. Here's how I do it:
10 points in the sensors tree on all mechs, 60% radar deprivation, 100m seismic.
All firepower skills for the weapons that I have, laser duration if I have lasers, SRM spread/crit, LBX spread, UAC jam et.c. I also always take all Cooldown nodes but I only take all heatgen nodes if the mech is hot. I do not bother with range or velocity skills unless I am running a PPC mech, then I take the velocity skills since there are no PPC specific skillnodes.

Ok so that's the standard for all mechs, now it start to differ depending on the mech itself.
Mobility:
For light mechs I got full mobility tree, all speedtweak nodes.
For mediums I do lots of handbrake turn, acceleration/deceleration, no speed tweak.
For heavies I start going mostly torso twist speed with some other mobility skills.
For assaults I only take torso twist nodes, usually 4-5 of them, and the nodes I need on the way of course.

Survivability:
Personally I only ever take armor or structure skills if the mech has quirks for it since you get so much more then. I do take all the -crit% nodes for most mechs if I can.

Operations:
I can't remember the exact numbers but the skills here are only worth it if you have a lot of heatsinks, I think the number where it started to be worth it was around 20 heatsinks? I only ever take the skills here on pure, heavy, lasermechs like the Supernova or Hellbringer.

That's it. It's really easy, once you figure it out you'll be skilling out mechs in minutes.
There's also a skilltree for consumables but I do not bother with that, you get 1 slot for free which I use for my coolshot. Of course other people will have other opinions but I think that I have shown that what I do works.

I just came back to MWO because of the new BattleTech game. Can I get reinvited to WoL? Name is Vayra in-game.

I had some MC left so I bought the piranha and the hero ACH and I've been having a lot of fun running around and pouring machine-gun fire into assaults, but I'm still really bad. I read the pointers on the skill trees from a little ways up the page -- should I still get radar deprivation on mechs with ECM? I thought that's what ECM did already.

e: I also have three stalkers (including the hero) back from when 5-6 PPCs didn't immediately explode your engine and you needed three mechs per chassis. Are there any viable stalker builds or are they all absolute garbage?

ECM shortens the range at which you can be R targeted. Radar Deprivation makes you get untargeted faster once you break line of sight. You may as well get the nodes since ECM really improves with its two special nodes down in the sensor tree anyway.

Stringbean
Aug 6, 2010
People can still hold and maintain locks on ecm mechs. The idea of both Radar Deprivation and the ECM skills is to make it ridiculously hard to keep a firm lock (which is nice when you've got a streak boat chasing you down)

With regards to the other persons question on the Black Knight. Tjyv has the right of it. The mounts on it sucks, but I encourage you to still try it out. It's still a cool rear end looking mech, and you can laser vomit like a champ. You're just limited with hills and ledges. You're going to want to approach fights from the second line.

I'm enjoying my Vindicator hero, but the chassis has some severe limitations. Its only torso mounted weapons are generally 1 or 2 missile slots. One headlaser is also universal, but all other weapons are in the arms, which are mounted low enough that you have to play around that fact.

Two of the three C-bill variants come with the same low engine cap most Blackjacks have, topping out at 84kph. There hero can achieve 90, the 1AA can take a 295 engine and hit 106kph or so.

Being a 45 ton mech, you've only got so much tonnage to work with anyway.

There are some upsides. They all have good armor quirks. They can take a hit in a pinch, especially if you use the missile hardpoints as your main source of damage, because it demands less exposure compared to the arm gun. They all have more max armor than Centurions on every section (depending on the size of the Cent's gun arm armor quirk, some beat it there, but not all) and is tougher than Hunchbacks in every section but the hump, without the giant target on it.

So among mechs nobody seriously plays anymore, it's the toughest with the smallest profile of the three. And when you compare it to something like an Uziel, you just laugh.

It jumps pretty well if you spare the tonnage for jets.

The 1X has a massive -25% missile cooldown and an additional bonus to heat dissipation so despite only having one missile slot, it can probably vomit MRM40s real well. It only has two energy slots but big -20% heat and cooldown quirks for them. This variant has the biggest quirks of them all, maybe to make up for the fact that using its 3 Ballistic slots for anything but machineguns (30% rof bonus!) demands huge compromises on a small chassis like this so they were desperate to make it good somehow :v: It even has bigger armor quirks than the other variants.

The Vindicator is a really awkward mech. I'm enjoying mine but if the missiles weren't mounted reasonably high on the torso it would be a lot worse, because its arm mounts are really not very good.

Finally got back to the game after a couple of years. Spend a some time with a Centurion, trying to get close to robbits butts and unloading SRMs into them. Curiously, I survive longer with a Cent than with a brawler Atlas, because I understand that I'm a short range Medium that shouldn't go toe to toe with Assaults. Meanwhile, I feel that an Atlas (specially one which can engage at 250 meters tops) should charge in, and get murdered by being dumb.

Yeah this is exactly my experience too. In addition to the assault player perhaps feeling invulnerable and overextending, opposing players often tunnel vision the big scary assaults and ignore the little dudes pouring damage into their backs
