Fidelity. Wait, was I'm working on again?

colonelwest posted:

That brings up something I've been thinking about, how backers and Chris go on and on about fidelity, and we all imagine it as hamstringing the development, but hardly any of those fidelicious second life features ever seem to make it into the game, and many of them seem to die a quiet death behind the scenes. Commandos can't even engage in riveting trace gas balancing gameplay yet. It seems like CIG starts a circle jerk among the backers about some new ultra-realistic feature that wont use "cheats and trickery" like other game devs, then years after screwing around with that feature they give up on it, and then implement a hollowed out version with the same "cheats and trickery" of other devs just with an extreme level of incompetence. The whole argument that "CIG isn't cutting corners and they are taking their time to make the most detailed and ambitious game ever" continually falls apart before our eyes, but backers continue to applaud CIG for these sisyphean tasks that waste time and money without ever producing anything usable in the game.

This entire debacle makes me feel like I'm trapped in a 7-year long episode of The Twilight Zone. Gamers, the one nit-pickiest group of hobbyists who usually see through bullshit like Superman sees through walls, are completely enthralled by the fully transparent lies of the worst non-game-developer fraud who ever lived. Chris Roberts has been persona non grata in the game development community since his thumb head showed up, yet every mumbled, bumblefuck word he utters is sucked down by these morons like it's candy, and they're starved for more.

Install and play the "game" and it gets even worse. It's obvious from the first second of launch that CIG has no idea what they're doing, and worse than that, their Idiot King is making sure the few things they do build, they build wrong. CIG codes like cavemen were brought into the present day with a time machine, given PCs to work on, and denied any historical data that would give perspective to their efforts and are instead expected to recreate the entire gaming discipline from the ground up, with no experience, with the dumbest man of all cracking the whip above them.

Every piece of evidence connected to this, every piece, absolutely screams incompetence and bad faith. Nepotism, lying about stretch goals, lying in their own TOS, Chris lying in every video and in every interview, stealing almost $200 million from people and building complete and utter poo poo.

Gamers were the group that were supposed to be above all this. Gamers were supposed to be "too smart to fool." And I'll be goddamned if the wool hasn't been pulled from my eyes forever, because if Star Citizen taught me only one thing, it's that the ego and self-importance of the "gaming community," and their collective belief that they were "ahead of the curve" intellectually and socially, has been proved 100% false by Chris Roberts. This community was fooled, and continues to be fooled, by a two-bit huckster who's not even bothering to hide his crimes.

If it weren't for this thread, I'd feel like the only sane man in an asylum.

I mean it's not even enough to say that Star Citizen's horrifyingly poo poo scam status is "obvious." "Obvious" is not the right word. I need a word for something that's just right there in front of you, something that's beyond obvious. Like if you're holding a basketball, it's not "obvious" that you're holding a basketball, because it's right loving there in your hands. It doesn't need a word to describe its occurrence beyond the fact that it's loving happening right there in front of you in real-time.

How much of a goddamed scam this is isn't "obvious" because it's happening right there for anyone who has eyes to see. Look: a scam; there it is, right now.

You don't see this poo poo happening with movie watching or book reading. I actually think gamers are waaaay more susceptible to confidence scams because most of them aren't confident, so when they see someone who is they assume certain things. What they usually don't do is stand up to the confident person and confront them in their bullshit. And since a bunch of 'gamers', 2 million in fact, have signed onto this project, that means other smart individuals like myself, the gamer, must be seeing the correct version of the world.

People who worked alongside him made that serviceable game. He attached his name to it. We're still suffering through the repercussions of that timeline.

That's mainly why he was never respected in the general game dev community, and wasn't regarded as a peer. Obviously he still isn't, or he would have had people jumping to help him fund this "game."

If you threaten CIG with legal action in the EU or especially Germany, they usually crumble down. I know a German Backer who even got an "audience" with Crobbler because he threatened legal action after he felt a refund (essentially an interrest free loan) would not be an adequate action to end his relationship to CIG.

of course CIG stone walls refunds in germany too. but they have no leg to stand on when it actually comes to the legal business here. everyone with SQ42 or undelivered ships can get a full refund on that item here legally. and its not far fetched to get a refund on star citizen itself.

The trekker and starwars fan are just subset of the same technology fetishistic nerd/gamer fandom, before videogames that was the best they had in escapist fantasies.

I think newer stuff like Harry Potter fans are just part of this new wave of normies entering nerd culture because it's become so loving popular. So they want to emulate it. Not sure what Whovians are.

I mean I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you won't find a single trekkie or star wars fan who also isn't a gamer at some level. I don't think you can say the same about Potter Fans.

Than again I don't really know those communities, mostly just the gamer group. Maybe the difference is technology stuff, with fiction that looks back to a fanstastical time of Dragons and Magic you don't really have anything to look forward too, unlike sci-fi which has inspired technology/society in ways, and at it's core sort of is prescriptive of future events. Games I think are just the most addictive version of this sci-fi looking forward, because the medium is driven by technology moving forward.

How this makes them more gulliable, gently caress me I have no idea. I'm mostly speaking from personal experiences with the nerd community dealing with women, and how loving easily that manipulation happens. Like friends of years and years willing to break friendships because a fat girl smiled at them. And if you can be that easily fooled by sex, I don't see how other forms of social coercion wouldn't work as well.

Wow.

What breakthroughs are he refering to?

Literally everything that CIG has attempted (and failed miserably at) have been done before, there is nothing in their knackard collection of disjointed sublevels that strikes me as 'new'. Everything they have classed as 'never done before' has been done before, apart from the money gathering techniques, but that's because very few other games companies are as loving bare arsed brazen and willing to lie so blatently about what they are doing.

I feel the end is near for this epic saga of non-development fucktardery, everything is turning against CIG and even as it does so, they reach, grasp, tear and rip at the pockets of passers by hoping to snag ever more currency. The talk of ever more features and gameplay will continue, the promises of ever lasting enjoyment will continue to echo indefinitely, but in the end there will be nothing but one community stood agasp, laughing, pointing at the wreck of it, and another community so crippled by goonfear, braced for the heckles and jeers, and then having to tell their partners exactly how much they lost on the game that never was.

The argument could be made that a spaceship is simply a "reward" for backing the project, which at its inception was SQ42 with Star Citizen as the multiplayer. In which case, no amount of "playable" software has been made of SQ42.

That being said, that would require very specific legal language that isn't at the mercy of CIG's responses. I would not suggest a small claims case on this merit.

We live in the age of identity, in fact we're drowning in it. Everyone is constantly Balkanized on dozens of levels, based on superficial things from race and gender to PC vs console gaming. It creates atomized humans with the belief that identity is a zero sum struggle, there is always the ominous other out to destroy them as a bisexual black female or a straight white conservative male. It's a nebulous struggle for the expression of identity in the public sphere, producing only a vague anger and fear from which no concrete or actionable understanding of the world and power structures that govern it can ever be formed, leaving people isolated and powerless.

People feel this dis-empowerment on some instinctual level, but they're incapable of understanding its source, so they paradoxically cling more and more to intrinsically meaningless forms of community in a search for agency and meaning. There are whole multi-billion dollar industries that cater to this, from blatantly predatory things like Scientology and multi-level marketing to the more innocuous renaissance of "nerd culture" entertainment and merchandising.

Star Citizen is one of the more comical examples of this. It's a fantasy for citizens to retreat into from the harsh realities of a world devoid of meaning and fulfillment, a replacement for traditional forms of community that have either atrophied or they are alienated from, and a vehicle to feel empowerment through changing the entire landscape of gaming forever. They will be important and respected people someday in this new world they helped create. Star Citizen is a social phenomenon which acts as an easily accessible microcosm of post-modernity, and that's why its so fascinating to me.

Personally, I'm okay with highly complex games that require constant re-balancing charging over a hundred or more for the complete package, or around 50 or so with everything on sale, especially the least accessible games in a niche genre, and I'm happy the company has found a way to deliver good products in the new way video games are monetized. I'd be irked if they had a no-sale policy, but you can always wait a bit and just get the DLC for ~50% or more off a few months later.
