I absolutely love it, except for making you buy a dosimeter. That's pretty much a necessity. I love being able to drop all my stuff and run like hell at the push of a button, and love specific weapon degradation like breaking the firemode switch, and belt space for easy access of ammunition.

That would all be a problem if they didn't provide so many alternatives. Quick melee, dedicated pistol slot and decreased general engagement ranges as well as more interesting and sparse encounters. Good stealth and generally reasons to travel light. Having to manually sort the damaged ammo is meant to consume some time. It's much more of a procedural affair than typical STALKER, and I can't see myself going back to CoC.

Basically, it's not tedium. It's added depth providing more interesting ways for encounters to play out, though it does so with mechanics that can understandably prove unpalatable. I was out of shells for my shotgun, so I was scrambling through my inventory for a reload. Unpacked my damaged ammo, found a single bullet for my pistol and loaded it. Hit one of the bandits, but didn't kill him and he still had a friend. So I was forced to charge at them with a shovel or risk getting shot while running. Now I never go anywhere without that shovel.

I'm about %97.12 sure that I had a very unlucky day in Jupiter today.

I was trying to kill some Monolith soldiers and loot their fine weaponry but I ended up being chased by a Pseudogiant near the Concrete Bath anomaly, as I also had the mission to place an Anomaly Scanner there. Running away from the monster, I noticed a crowded group of Pseudodogs approaching, just before I could find myself a safe spot near the Bitumen Anomaly. A few minutes later, without much hope, I went back to check on Pseudogiant, as I haven't been feeling the tremors created by it for a while. Found it dead, in the middle of a pool of Pseudodogs. Decided to go back to the task at hand, I noticed that there were actually two Pseudogiants in the area... I ran towards the Jupiter Plant this time. Lost my tail, but I got surprised by flying objects inside the building. Thought it was a Burer at first, but couldn't find it and decided to explore around the plant. I saw & shot a Monolith soldier, and just when I was running at his corpse, I saw a black, small object flying towards me. I thought that was a crow at first, but then it flew from behind me and hit a wall. I was close to the wall, I walked to it to see that it was the Monolither's rifle. Picked it up so the Burer wouldn't use it against me but, unfortunately, it was a Poltergeist. I noticed this soon after I was under a very high psi-attack. I checked around, tried to spot it but running away seemed a better option.

Went to the Concrete Bath, placed the scanner and was running back to Ecologists' Lab for safety. I didn't tell but from the beginning of all this, I've also been followed by a bunch of Tushkanos. One of them attacked me when I was regaining my breath, I turned around and I saw an object right next to me. It was the Anomaly Scanner. I shook my fist at air Poltergeist.

After reaching to safety, I wanted to fast-travel back to the Swamps so I ran towards the Yanov Station. I opened the door and saw five corpses on the floor. I turned around slightly to see the Zombified Stalker and his AK, both pointed towards me and I was soon dead. Quickly reloaded a savegame with the excitement of possible Freedom loot, opened the door, pointed my FN SCAR at the Zombified Stalker, just as I was shooting, I saw a Freedom soldier running behind it. He ran, he shot at the zombie, the bullets pierced zombie's body and since I was directly behind it, killed me as well.

I hope my savegame doesn't get corrupted next.

I'm playing Call of Chernobyl for the first time in free mode, a bit fetch questy but I'm enjoying it. My only issue is that the trenchcoat bandit is a literal übermensch. He completely kicks the poo poo out of every other NPC that goes near him (two of them in a bandit gang wiped a military squad in Cordon), tanks grenades, laughs off full clips from a SIG-5k to the chest and I was a bit peeved after he survived a fuckton of fire and 10 of my knife hits, only to knock me back and two shot me. Game's still fun, but bandits sometimes feel like I'm fighting Space Marines. The "AYY MLYAA" is worth it though.

Been playing both Dead Air and Anomaly. I really, really like Dead Air, especially how NPCs become really important in the game's economy. The melee additions are both surprisingly viable and fun. The crafting is really cool tool. Tip to people having loot troubles: the breakable boxes are a really strong source of loot, and they respawn. Also, instead of selling all your random trinkets to the traders, check to see if nearby NPCs have anything you want, because sometimes the items are more valuable to them than the traders. You can purchase bandages and medkits from them using some items the traders won't even buy.

Anomaly reminds me much more of a traditional STALKER mod like Oblivion Lost or OGSE, of course it is based on Last Day. At first I felt the game was way, way too easy. I found a full condition PKM on a soldier near my starting area and that felt kinda weird. However, later on after selling my loot and buying what I needed, I realized that its balance was based around giving you a lot of loot, but putting you in situations where you would use it up quickly.

I couldn't get into Dead Air. Everything just felt like a bitter slog. I changed maps a few times and tried getting involved in various quests but couldn't find an area/faction that clicked. Is there any particular favorite area/faction you like to get involved in? I'll try Anomaly next, the guy making it seems to have a good idea of difficulty balance, at least.

E: Anomaly Repack is WAY more fun for me! Though it was rather obtuse how to install - you have to get all the 7z files from the url included in the Anomaly Repack .zip, and download them individually and then unzip the lot with 7zip. Not as visually impressive, unfortunately, but you can just load in, choose a faction and enjoy some fun Chernobly times. Though you don't seem to start with any money, you do start with weapons, meds and a jacket which is far more than I'm used to.

Ok, for those who are playing Dead Air, how do you find a place to sleep? I have a bedroll (but not a sleeping bag), and apparently you can use them to camp next to a fire, but this never seems to work for me. If I actually need a sleeping bag, then why in the world doesn't Sid sell one in his inventory?

And I am also unable to get the matches and resin combo to work for me either. Do I need to be someplace special to get it to work?

I was not able to figure out the mystery of bedrolls but the translation I had suggested you could use them to sleep outside on the earth. I was only ever able to sleep with a sleeping bag. The one time I tried to sleep with a sleeping bag in DA, however, I was in the basement of the rookie camp of Cordon and somehow died in the basement with the beds. I have no idea how or who did that. I assume sleeping with a bedroll will end similarly, but who knows.

You take damage from 10msv of radiation upwards, as well as hunger damage. That'll kill you in your sleep if you sleep for a long time. Bedrolls work fine next to fires, try drum fires indoors.

I don't think I was irradiated but I don't have the dosimeter, however I was drunk off my rear end on radiation cleansing vodka. I slept for about 5-6 hours, so clearly I'm doing something wrong.

One thing I do really like in Dead Air is the Satiety meter as a background to the health meter in the PDA. It's not immediately apparent, but is actually quite useful.

Pixelponny

In order to sleep anywhere in the Zone on Dead Air, you have to use the sleeping bag in your inventory, which would place a bedroll at your feet wherever you are standing. Then you can use the bedroll and the alarm clock dialogue to sleep. Sleeping bag turns into a compression bag after being used, which is revertible if you use it near the bedroll you've placed.

I think the best way of starting Dead Air is taking advantage of the starting kits. Experienced Stalker kit would give you the Sunrise Suit; which is more than ideal for a fresh start. The Artifact Hunter kit would also provide an EO-20 gas mask. The environmental radiation levels are usually lethal, even in Cordon, therefore you should almost never take off your Gas Mask. These kits also include a back pack, Dosimeter, a basic detector, one artifact container and a headlamp. Do not try to make the mod more challenging than it is; this would make you want to quit even after hours of gameplay. Challenges should be avoided until after completing a playthrough.

In Cordon, follow the starting quest line to attack the Bandits at the Car Park. If you are lucky, you'll get a shotgun of some kind, which would help you survive against the never-ending mutant spawns. Rely on a shotgun for about the half of your playthrough; wasting your rifle ammunition on Blind Dogs, Cats and Boars would be a waste. Not to mention, good rifle ammunition is not common.

For food, you will have to utilize mutant parts and/or the food you can get by looting NPC corpses. Use a cooking kit next to a campfire to cook mutant parts. This will reduce the amount of radiation you'll be affected by it, and increase the satiety rating. You can use the commonly found Moonshine or Cossacks Vodka to get rid of irradiation. However Moonshine Vodka doesn't wear off easily and would make your head spin for (in game) hours. As an irradiation level of 500 mSv and over can kill you around the same time, you might need to use anything you can find in the case of emergency. I find the Ukrainian Beer that comes in green bottles very useful, as they don't get you drunk easily.

It's best to take care of your survival needs in Stalker camps / faction bases. A medic can take care of your irradiation problem and heal you back to full health in exchange of 1850 RU, for each treatment. Locations of these utility NPCs are marked on your PDA if you're in a faction base. Other than that, I've been told of one Medic in the Stalker village in Cordon, but don't seem to find him, instead I could find an unmarked technician by the campfire.

Keeping above suggestion in mind, make trips in the Zone that you can start and end in one day, preferably during daytime. Planning your trips has a lot to do with both survival and economy. Take advantage of saving your game and save your game to a clean slot before your trips. Any environmental damage (chemical, radiation, burn damage, shock damage) that is above your equipments' protection levels will degrade your equipment. Even if you survive a situation or can safely return from a trip, you might lose money on repairs. Do not forget that your backpack is also subject to degradation. A damaged backpack carries less weight efficiently, therefore decreases your endurance. Always monitor your equipments' condition and repair early. Maintaining your equipment can cost a lot, easily. If you realize that you will end up losing more money than you would earn, just return to an earlier save. It will still save you more time, especially when you get your hands on good & expensive equipment.

Early in the game, having one equipment condition dropping below 85% would mean not being able to repair it using the basic repair kits. Use the provided additional items to boost the uses of your repair kits. Read descriptions of items before considering selling them or trading them. Inevitably you will need to store your maintenance items. You can use the blue box near Sidorovich in Cordon to pile up your loot and utilities as no other NPC can steal from there. You will need to have stashes in multiple places, so try to find good spots for them. A stash in Rostok (Bar) area is useful but just until you can have trips to further north.

Looting is the best way to make some money. In Garbage, take advantage of Bandits and Stalkers killing each other. In Agroprom, the Northern Complex is usually attacked by some mutants, which's a situation that you can turn into opportunities easily. Also the location of this area is useful that you can make looting runs back and forth to the Clear Sky base in the Great Swamps. Clear Sky base probably has whatever you need during your first days in the Zone. Visit the barman, Librarian to buy some Beard's Tea, it is great for regaining endurance and increases satiety as well.

For food, try getting basic fetch quests. These usually yield food items as rewards. Canned/packed "quality" food is rare when you start, but they are obtainable in Rostok. Don't forget to talk to the Duty guards and pay them 5000 RU. Or just wait until mutants wipe them off. It doesn't take a long time. If you want to make sure that happens earlier, just exit the map back to Cordon, reenter Garbage and run to the guards. The game periodically spawns new mutants around the PC, so wherever you go, NPCs around you are also in danger.

For medical items, you can visit Sakharov in Yantar but you might encounter a lot of mutants, especially Bloodsuckers to the north of Agroprom. Fighting a Bloodsucker is harder on this mod but you'll need to learn how to do it. This is why investing on a good shotgun which can load more than 4 shots is almost essential. I picked up a SPAS12 after killing a Master Bandit, which happened to be resting near a campfire in Northern Complex and I used it nearly until the end of the mod. Shotgun shells are easily to find and they're rather inexpensive if you consider that you'll be dealing with random mutant spawns all throughout the game.

I just installed Dead Air after navigating the MODDB site. They could have made it a little less painful...

I think I'm irradiated even after drinking 3 bottles of vodka. Currently dying either to radiation damage or lack of sleep. Are there indicators for being tired? Almost died to a cat when walking to the car park. Died several times when killing bandits solo because I didn't know where Fanatic was and had to stealthily knife one to steal his busted SKS. I climbed into the attic of the barn and sniped the remaining bandits. I'm currently in the Cordon basement trying to sleep on the bed in there, but I don't think I can, so I'm going to die due to my severe wasting disease or whatever it is that's killing me.

Being tired makes you have double vision and your screen slightly wobbly. If you don't have a dosimeter, you won't be able to tell how many rads you have, and you won't know when you're taking them. It's possible that you gained like hundreds of rads while naively wandering around an area you thought was safe.

Also check the hunger bar, which is the green one right below your health bar in the inventory menu.
