I'm so happy that this LP is going further than any previous FNV SSLPs, if only because I've read them all and they've all been abandoned :argh:

...Also obviously because it's particularly good, ApeHawk. (It is.)

I rarely read updates as long as yours and end them wishing they were longer. They are the absolute right length, unless you wanted to make them longer, maybe.

Agreed. I'm keeping up with a few SSLP's and even though I like those ones, there are still times I'll see an update, go 'ehhh', and let it sit for a number of days. I can't think of a time I've had that happen with Sun's adventures. It's really good.

Same.

Revisiting this DLC through another player's eyes makes me see how good the writing of this one is. I still didn't care for the game play, but I think it's made up for by the rest.

Also, trapping Elijah in the vault is much more satisfying than outright killing him.

Nice sneaking mission. I still prefer the "throw yourself through the forcefield" method- a combination of C4 left at the base of the stairs and Eli's gauss rifle blast will clip you through it.

Safety Deposit Box is the only real way to end this.

I actually found the looping Vera tape really haunting and sad and her VA does a really good job of sounding desperate. The fact it has been looping there for ages as a ghastly reminder of what went down played well with the DLC and its themes in my book.

The gameplay unfortunately stays annoying when you enter the basement. On my first time it took forever to find my way around the emitters and speakers. On subsequent playthroughs I just flat out noclipped and turned everything off because gently caress all that.

If it weren't for the gameplay downsides, Dead Money would be a real masterpiece. I still think it's the best of the DLC's, just because of how well written it is.

And thanks to you, now I don't have to play it myself again for a while. :v:

Now that we're past it, I can tell you what happens if you're the world's biggest jerk to Christine and wants to kill you. She booby traps the corridor leading to Vera's room, comes charging at you with her fists raised... but has also retooled her collar frequency to act as a moving speaker, so if she corners you, the collar goes off and you die. Apparently it's supposed to be possible to wear her out by just running away (not too far or she goes back to Vera's room to reset the collar) and then talk to her but I've not seen any videos doing it.

Gambling in the Madre is actually far more profitable than gambling anywhere else as the chips exchange for prewar money. On a related note finding the snow globe would give 2000 chips, plenty to start gambling with.

I get it! You're, uh...
Obsidian has done some really cool stuff with themes. Another story of theirs, the Mask of the Betrayer expansion to Neverwinter Nights 2, is all about, well, betrayal; what happens when you have to choose between loyalties? That might be loyalty to one's lover, or family, or culture, or faith, or even sense of self. Just about every character in that game has to grapple with betraying someone, being betrayed themselves, or very often, both. It's very well-done. If you're not familiar with it, I believe there's a pretty good screenshot LP up at the archive. Well worth the read if you like Obsidian's writing.

This DLC has betrayal in it, but I think its main theme is obsession. Every character, past and present, has an obsession with someone or something, and Dead Money is the story of what happens when all these obsessions come together. Think about it: in the past, we have Sinclair, Dean, and Vera. Sinclair is obsessed with Vera, that much is clear. Dean is obsessed with Sinclair (ruining him, that is, and eventually the casino that is his legacy.) Vera is tougher, because while Dean speaks for himself and Sinclair left personal writings, we only get glimpses of her personality. Still, it seems to me like she is obsessed with approval- she desperately wants to be liked. Hard to know without hearing her side of the story, though.

Contrast that with the present: we have Elijah, who is obsessed with remaking the world; Christine, who is obsessed with punishing Elijah for his crimes; Dean, who hasn't changed; Dog, who is obsessed with approval and being liked; and God, who is obsessed with control. Each character defines, justifies, and acts on their obsessions in their own way; and not only that, they must navigate around the obsessions of others, even people who have been dead for centuries. And in what is IMO a stroke of brilliance, the player's obsession with winning/success is presented by way of the gold bars at the end: unless you know exactly what to do, claiming the prize almost certainly leads to a game over. Of course you can reload the game or read a guide or abuse game mechanics. But who would do that, unless they were obsessed? And doesn't that prove that letting go truly is the hard part when you're in such a mindset? We can (and should!) judge characters like Dean and Elijah to be cruel and selfish; but their inability to let go is far from monstrous. On the contrary, it's strikingly human.

You beautiful bastard. I can only assume you gambled after trapping the old gently caress in his tomb, after stealing all that gold. Also loved how SV thought out how she'd both escape AND get the gold out before going with just "gently caress this, I'mma just sneak out". Also didn't realize he pretty much name dropped the other three locations for the DLC.

We don't need to have that dialogue because it's obvious, trivial, and has already been had a thousand times.
Check out Elijah's radio signal. I'm pretty confident that at originally, the Sierra Madre was going to be revistable like other DLC locations, and Elijah would have appeared as a hologram using those lines.

There's a trap option on the vault computer, designed to trap in Dean Domino forever, but instead can trap you if you're an idiot, or Elijah if he doesn't notice you.

Alas, RPG players find a way, always.

Elijah is trapped in a number of ways, actually: the message to Dean actually seals the Vault, but it can only be accessed by the terminal inside, not outside. It's implied that that's what traps him, but the facility is also blowing up, he wouldn't know the correct path to go the long way around, there's still the Cloud and the Holograms (if the Courier didn't get them all), and the elevator is only really one-way, and Christine (who decided to stick around the Sierra Madre for life, but that's an ending slide semi-spoiler) wouldn't go down to save Elijah in a thousand lifetimes.

I DID miss the Sierra Madre snowglobe, unfortunately! It's inside a hole in the wall, accessed via the rooftops, next to one of Dean's stashes, in Salida del Sol. I honestly never bothered to get it... ever, since it gives you Sierra Madre chips instead of caps (makes sense, but still not that great) and the maze-like structure and infinite-spawning Ghosts makes it hell to navigate. My bad!

"Letting go" is certainly the theme of the story, and it's definitely a rare one to explore. It's supposed to speak more towards the player, though, and it would work better in a game without quicksaves.

I've replayed this DLC several times over different NV playthroughs, and I actually enjoy it more now that I know where everything is and how to beat it. The writing and atmosphere turned out beautifully, the gameplay... not so much.

As I think about this, I realize the F:NV is my most recent Obsidian game. I've never played any of the Pillars of Eternity or South Park games, the former because I find micro-managing a party in RTwP combat to be a huge headache, and the latter because I have no real interest in South Park. For anyone who's played them, any thoughts on how they compare to New Vegas, quality-wise?

Serra Madre chips exchange 1:1 for pre-war money at the casino cage once you get the the casino running again. Selling pre-war money is effected by barter (unlike legion and NCR money) and Trudy in goodsprings will actually give full value if you don't go with the powder gangers, end result is a snow globe worth around 20000 caps.

The casino chips also “refine” into stimpacks and chems, which are big sellers in stores and can be used afterwards. And with the packages of chips you get every few days, you literally never have to worry about caps again. And I don’t recall the snowglobe being TOO terribly difficult to find if you’re like me and explore everywhere you can for goodies to deposit at the villa entrance to take with you into the main game. Plus, with the collar off, I THINK (don’t quote me on this) that you can gain access to new places after the end because the collar would make your head explode before getting into safe spots, if any
