Isn't this a nickname she gave herself?

Like, her major character trait is that she desperately wants to be a wiseguy -- funny, charismatic, liked, respected -- but she's actually too belligerent, petty, mean and stupid to ever be like that. I think the actress is killing it too.

Episode Three spoilers:
Not super feeling the season, but I think that's because the season is mirroring the way the characters are isolated and compelled to turn against each other -- by the FBI, by the various Block gangs -- by having characters disappear for several episodes at a time, and you never getting the sense of whether a character will stick around or not. We don't know where the characters are half the time, or what they're doing when they're not there. So when they can have major bombshells like Freida turning on Taystee and Red, it's both shocking (I do not like Freida right now) but also a reflection of how little we know about what's going on, and therefore necessarily frustrating.

It's totally a shout out to HBO's Oz, right? Black character in a maximum security prison cell sees alternate, theatrical versions of the cast performing directly to camera. They even have the Dorothy/Emerald City stuff (which is a recurring theme this season, of all things, it also turns up in at least two other episodes).

The rest of the episode was fine I guess. I always hate that point in any long running show where they arbitrarily cycle out most of the supporting cast. No matter how justified it is in the story it always makes the show feel a lot smaller.

If their plan was to turn the show into the female version of the later seasons of Oz then mission accomplished I guess.

I enjoyed this series - it was a big step up from series 5 at least. I kinda struggled to get through 5 at all.

I think skimming the supporting cast was necessary; since season 4 the recurring character list was getting pretty extreme.

I feel they actually should have skimmed a bit more, like (full season spoilers) what was the point in keeping Sophia Burset around? She could have been in a different prison and still had the same scenes if they wanted to - I don't think she interacted with anybody inside the prison at all. Only giving Frieda some chemicals which turned out to be a red herring anyway.

(Episode 1 spoilers) Yeah, the series is set in a new prison (max security) and the cast has been cut down considerably.

Three episodes in an nothing is clicking. At least in the previous seasons I felt sympathetic for some of the characters or interested to learn their backstories; so far even the flashbacks have been completely uninteresting.

Yeah, I dug the rest of episode 1, and 2 was alright. Passed out during 3 so I'll watch more today.

In general I don't mind them cutting down the cast (holding out hope for a couple characters I would like to still appear, but they have most of the characters I want to be seeing) but ngl

look bb I don't blame you but will it help if I mention I've always had a mad crush on Taylor Schilling so to take my Piper opinions w/ a grain of salt ????? I just love how unafraid they are to still be making GBS threads on her constantly b/c she really is an awful human being and I'm glad they don't sugarcoat it lmao. I like hot messes ok !!!!

Also yeah this season is kinda weird, I'm on ep6 now though and still enjoying it quite a bit, but it definitely feels off by nature of splitting everyone up and throwing them in a new prison. I like some of the new characters but I'm missing some of the old ones I'm still not sure will show up or not, so RIP on that. Overall it's going better than that first episode led me to believe this season would.

I thought she was African, not Jamaican.

Her ‘Charlize Theron’ bit and telling Piper she wasn’t good at it was great. She never got named at all did she?

I’d watch a show from her perspective. Gang wars? Drug trade? Whatever. Just cheerfully going about her day, taking care of wall rats.

Literally almost everyone in this show is either irredeemable, insufferable, or both. I think Red is the only inmate I genuinely like. Oh and Frieda and Nicky I guess. I mean plenty of my dislike is buildup from other seasons but still.

Everything with Piper and Alex literally makes me want to fast forward. I hate them both.

The flashback of Carol and Barb, Jesus Christ. I can't decide if it was disturbing, or absurd to the point of hilarious.

Also I have a visceral hatred of Badison. Like beyond her being a villain. Maybe it's the accent or something. Also it finally hits me what bothers me about so much of this show. The (I think) good guys are loving morons.

On the brighter side Caputo is the best. Just the best.

Don't be scared
I am through ep.6, and it's almost comical how hard they have to try to write anything for Piper to do. Of all seasons, this is the most "shes not like the rest and doesnt really belong here" Piper story we've had.

I also feel like the show is trying to remind us that most of these women did pretty bad poo poo to get to prison. This is the first time since season 1 where it seems as if they've dehumanized some of the characters, but that might be some commentary about maximum security confinement.

Over the last 3 seasons, this seems much more like a show about Taystee. And this season, at least through 6 eps, is making it seem more like that.

Sorry, I'm extremely bad with all accents and especially less common ones, whoops. I also must have missed where they named her? I just know her as the cool lady with rats who is down to party or stab as necessary.

At least they got rid of the loving AWFUL methhead duo. Although I found myself fast forwarding through anything regarding Piper and Alex as if they were the new methhead duo. I just don't CARE.
I also found anything with Suzanne getting more and more unbearable. I think showing her mental illness in a goofy skit fashion was...I dunno if it worked well?

Also, gently caress YOU, Black Cindy.

I'm kinda glad they brought Heely back for a little cameo. Heely was always one of the more compelling antagonists to me and seemed more fleshed out and real compared to the 'fantasy inmate' guard troupe they pulled out of their asses this season.

When people say they fast forward through certain characters/plotlines do you actually mean you skip through every time they're on screen?

I know it's bad form to tell people howto consume media but... How does any fiction make sense if you do that?

Because this show in particular has multiple stories going on. I was invested in the prison gang war, I don't give a poo poo about two characters moping around or getting prison married. You can easily skip those parts, just like you could literally fast forward through the methheads and not lose anything important.

Yeah. I can't say I did it 100% of the time but fluff scenes about them cuddling while Alex complains about Piper's breath aren't worth poo poo.

Am I the only one who has hated that relationship from the beginning because it was well established that Alex is a terrible person who did terrible things, even to Piper specifically, but it was like they eventually decided to have Piper and the audience forget all that?

Most bothersome case of this for me is the fat guard who gets his moment to shine as a stand-up friend and pretty good guy. Can the audience please forget that in a previous series he revealed that he used to make kids juggle grenades and raped/murdered a girl.

I think the Piper and Alex thing bothers me more because it reeks of what I'll call The Tumblr Effect, where fans on the internet are so obsessed with couples that the show decided they needed a main romance. So they completely sacrificed any good writing or characterization in favor of having an OTP.
