Because to express outward emotion is improper. You must remain stoic and impervious at all times. Therefore, when you love someone in a manga story, it has to be a secret. Then, you get to confess to the crime of having feelings or possibly the worst crime of all, not being some kind of soulless husk.

Did that sound racist? It's not meant to be.

mediocre translation

"acknowledgment" or "profession" or etc. synonyms would work just as well for the first hit in a dictionary, "confession"

Yeah, I always thought that was weird. Why do they use the same verb for telling someone that they love them and telling the world that they're gay or some other secret.

Don't worry, it was.

There's just this cultural idea in Japan that young people, mostly in middle school and high school, start relationships through a specific declaration of feelings, either in a letter or in person. "Confess" just became the normalized translation because "profess" isn't as popular a word anymore. A vast majority of Japanese to English translation is of anime, where love confessions are a really popular plot device.

That isn't really that different from how a lot of Western rom-coms and romantic subplots treat it too, and is probably just as unhealthy and unhelpful for teaching kids how human relationships actually work. I keep telling ya, romantic comedies probably have more to answer for than porn when it comes to screwing up young people's concepts of relationships and sex.

Of course, translation is always weird with manga, let along getting into the whole honorific and politeness issues. Given the language apparently has a billion layers of politeness and nuance built around past and present social structures there's an entire genre of comedy about say, referring to a drunken beggar as if he was the Emperor, and/or saying incredibly rude things in incredibly polite ways, etc.

No, from a skim of a Wikipedia summary I'm not sure whether it's meant to be breaking the mold, though I find those dry summaries are pretty awful for getting an idea of what the tone and themes of a movie actually are.

I think it comes down to that the idea of casual dating never seems to come up for protagonists in media, either you have a long period of denied attraction culminating in immediate upgrade to Boyfriend and Girlfriend as a lifelong whirlwind romance, or they don't know you exist until suddenly you save their life or something and immediately return your until then distant totally-not-stalkery affections.

...you actually start to see it being acknowledged more in like, incredibly recent media and some webcomics, complete with lessons that a breakup isn't the end of the world and you can have mutual friendship and attraction without it necessarily being a good idea to date. Hell, Venture Bros had Dermott acknowledged as giving good advice for the first time in his life: "You don't hafta nail her, just talk to her and see what happens."

Wendell posted:

Where do you think I got my data samples from?

I think anime in particular (though everything else isn't much better) may also have cultivated 'If you don't find your ONE TRUE LOVE in high school or at least while you are young and photogenically attractive you are rejected from society and will be alone and miserable forever' in particular. Though that might also be because it's a particular issue with Japan's society. (which is constructed more or less entirely out of social problems)

Also, sorry this got rambly, ranty and wildly off topic. Anyone got any comics about dysfunctional relationships as a result of unrealistic expectations learned from media?

It is supposed to be an exploration of those two extremes. The guy is addicted to porn, his girlfriend is super into sugary romcoms, and they both desperately try to live their respective fantasies through their broken relationship. The film does have problems, but the idea, I thought, was cool.
