For me at least I read any article I find interesting and expand upon it and take it to a creatively logical end based on assumed advancement in said study in the distant future and it's been a great source of inspiration for science fiction writing while maintaining a sense of verisimilitude.

CS2 has essentially become abandonware because Adobe can no longer maintain the activation servers for it. You can download a "backup copy" from Adobe on the honor system that you have a license for it, but it's in no way truly released as free.

I just switched to a new large-format dye-sub vendor. I need to have him dye the entire Pantone Solid Coated color book on my blank stock to use as a reference. Is there somewhere I can simply download an AI or PDF with every swatch on it? I don't want to build something like that from scratch.

Any recommendations for dye-sub vendors? I've been looking to do a few small batches of 10-20 shirts and so far every place I've found has quoted about $30 for double sided prints of that quantity.

I can only assume this is part of the reason that freelance prices keep dropping. I can't use a site like Freelancer or Upwork anymore because the people looking for someone to do work price it at cents on the dollar. One person was billing $50 for a minimum of 5 hours work...

Assembled shirts, or flat panels to be assembled? My vendor charges $15 per 57 X 36 inch flat piece, single-sided. My cut-sew-then assembles. That's extended CMYK with Neons.

Small batches, each piece unique.

Art folks who are familiar with Gnomon and Schoolism should know about the Society of Visual Storytelling. They have really good classes and are adding more at an alarming speed. You can buy the classes a la carte or do an all-you-can-eat subscription for pretty reasonable rates considering the quality and breadth of subject matter. Courses are focused on illustration as opposed to concept art or game art. They also have a forum with monthly challenges and critiques. Highly recommended all around!

100% this! Conlanging can get really rear end backwards annoying if you don't know what you're doing or don't know some common holes that'll make things annoying later down the line.

Initially I just wanted to get a few whipped up for myself just for fun because I have some cute designs in mind, but from my cursory research it looks like they need to be produced in large batches, is that correct?
Any production companies that you guys can recommend?

Some years back, a goon posted his WIP graphic novel here (possibly it was in GBS) and It looked incredible. I asked him about how was able to get such nice looking backgrounds/environments and he revealed that he was using a CAD program, and then I believe he redrew them in PS.

I'd like to do something similar. I have a project I'd like to start working on and I'd really like to build a foundation for what will amount to a ton of illustrations. I have zero experience with CAD. I'd like something that will let me build/pose crude models of my characters, and craft simple environments to create reference material for something that will later become ink/multimedia illustration. The only other requirement is that I'd like to have some sort of lighting system I can control. I guess tldr I want to be able to create story boards and remove the guess work from perspective and lighting because I'm lazy and let my self get too tripped up with perspective sometimes. It feels a little cheaty but whatever lol.

Do you guys have any recommendations for what program might be the best place to start? I know there are a lot of free ones, would they be sufficient and in that case which one would be the best? I'm also willing to pay a bit if it's worth the price although my funds are limited. Something that can run on a 5 year old macbook is also a huge plus.

Also any beginner tips would be greatly appreciated. I'm kind of a luddite and I have very little experience with using computers for art in any capacity.

I'm in a weird spot where I own a Surface Pro 4 but cannot really afford a PS sub for drawing.

ArtRage is great for "real" materials but I need something closer to Photoshop but hopefully not nearly as expensive.

I'm a rank amateur so I don't need professional level but something less than $100 and would help to (re)learn the basics.

What sort of styles do you want to do? That'll mostly determine what software you want.

Krita is way better than PS for drawing/painting, and super-configurable, but it kinda sucks at text editing. It's free, though!

Gimp is offbrand photoshop (also free!), though iirc it's not so great at brushwork (that might have changed), focusing more on photo editing, transforms, etc.

Between the two, you should be able to do anything PS can do.

I'd say... comic art, I guess. I've used Gimp a bunch for design work and I kinda hate it.
I've noodled with Autodesk Sketchbook but it feels really limited.

I'll try Krita. I've never heard of it.

I know you said you found something, but speaking from experience: Manga Studio/Clip Studio Paint is a fantastic drawing program, especially for comic stuff. It's spoiled me for most anything else. The best version's a bit expensive, though.

Agreed, manga studio is good for non-weeb stuff. I think they've changed the name to 'clip studio' in later versions, to shake the weeb association.

Glad you like Krita, I love it. Love how I can get my control freak on and have everything set up just right.
