Hard same. I was like wow I am crying at Dragon Quest? What is going on. The rhyming structure and the voice acting really brought it home for me.

Another thing that's bringing me to tears is how I can't get a dragon type monster to drop a motherfucking dragon hide, gently caress, come on, I just want to make a whip for Sylvando.

It's even better, (spoilers for just after that quest) the mermen also speak in rhyme, but with a different meter :allears:

I'm just finishing up getting the last of six macguffins and I'm absolutely in love with this game. Sylvando is definitely my MVP, dual-wielding falcon blades and being better at healing than any of the actual healers. I've honestly kind of stopped using Serena...does she get better? It really feels like Rab does everything she does except kabuff, and with the ability to actually do damage to things to boot.

So I just picked this up earlier than I thought I would because you bastards kept hyping it. Weirdly, Steam has a mature content warning on it, which I wouldn't expect on a Dragon Quest game. Without any spoilers, what's that about? If spoilers are necessary, then a general idea would be appreciated (gore, swearing, just general subject area). Or is this just someone being really overzealous? The page says frequent violence or gore, plus general mature content, but is that just the usual cartoony stuff of swing sword->thing dies?

Kind of want to gauge a level here since I thought it might be my seven-year-old's first Dragon Quest and didn't want to wait until I finish the thing thoroughly to make sure there's nothing disturbing.

There's the occasional "drat" and such, but I don't think there's language harsher than that, and the violence is basically how you describe, with monsters going out in a puff of smoke, and if there are dead bodies, there's no wounds or blood. What could probably be objectionable is the sexual content. You can get revealing outfits for some of your female party members, like a bunny suit and a belly dancer outfit, and one of your party members has abilities related to her sex appeal.

Speaking as someone who left them all off, the game is rather generous at the start. I recently as of the 4th major town and getting the boat hit a couple of bosses/stronger enemies that KO'd a party member or two with Desperate Attacks or when I was slacking on keeping everyone healed, but otherwise it is a fair bit easier than the rest of the series. I was starting to kind of wish I'd turned on stronger monsters but it's evening out a little more since I'm not spending a ton of time grinding.

You get 4 seeds of each stat (and skill seeds), and the grand prize for getting them all is a Happy Hat, which is also a Casino prize later in the game. Happy Hats are pretty good, though.

Like others have said, you can always disable Draconian Quest modifiers at any church, but you can't enable them without starting a new file, so anything you think you might want, you might as well turn on. You can always turn it off later.

One thing I'll say is that I don't think the game has a good equivalent of a "Hard" mode, if that makes sense. If playing with no modifiers is Normal difficulty, then playing with Stronger Monsters on is Very Hard difficulty. You go from random battles being not much of a threat without Stronger Monsters, to normal enemies knocking off a third of your HP with a normal attack with Stronger Monsters. I kinda wish there was a middle ground. Give me an "All Monsters Are Stronger" option to go with the existing "All Monsters Are Super Strong," I guess.

I ended up going without Stronger Monsters, but I did turn on Reduced XP From Weaker Enemies, which handily prevents you from overleveling. If you're a couple levels higher than the enemies you're fighting, you just don't get any XP at all. I don't know if I'd say it makes the game any harder, but it's a nice way to prevent making the game easier for yourself accidentally by gaining more levels than you want to.

uiru

So, I currently have a Falcon Blade +3 in my main hand, Platinum Sword +3 in secondary, and the auto-equip thinks this should be reversed because the Platinum Sword is higher attack but the Falcon Blade strikes twice (which it'll do in either hand) and I swear the total damage done is typically higher this way.

Oh, and if anyone hasn't discovered it on their own, you can quickly slide down ladders by holding circle (jump button).

There is a sparkly gather place in Dundrasil that has dragon hide. You can also steal it off the enemies there.

Wario Chalmers! WAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
I feel fine about normal mode but there’s a lot of drat monsters so it’s probably easy to overlevel if you’re a compulsive monster hitter like me with auto battle turned on. If this game had random encounters I’d probably be a handful levels lower than what I am now.

Harrow
Jun 30, 2012

One thing really helping my enjoy the game is how much of a non-issue MP is for Veronica. Absorbing MP from enemies with normal attacks means I can use her spells in random battles without needing to worry about being tapped out by the time we hit a boss and that's so, so nice. I don't remember that being the case for mages in previous Dragon Quest games, either.

Yeah, that's why I turned on the no EXP from weaker monsters option. I hate accidentally overleveling in RPGs so it's the perfect option for me, even if I'm not necessarily doing it for any special "challenge" or anything. Sometimes I just need to fight like a dozen groups of cactiballs for a quest and I don't want to end up overleveling, y'know?

Maybe it's the casinos? There's nothing harsher than a "drat" or a "hell". Some creepy boss monsters and some sad parts where good people die but nothing worse than you'd see in an old Disney movie.

It's really glaring because of how polished every other inch of the game feels. The world map has those lovely, farty trumpets that grate really quickly and it really takes some of the sheen off an otherwise perfect DQ game.

Ok. I'll enable stronger monsters for the time being but I guess I'll just turn it off if it becomes a problem.

The cheatengine forums seem to have a table that has the draconian quest flags available too if I want to enable some of them later.

edit: I tested the table. Modifying the draconic quest flag for the less experience from lower level monsters worked fine and persisted through saving the game too.

I wish I could turn off JUST the overworld theme, it's the worst one by far. I would actually prefer NES era chiptune Dragon Warrior IV soundtrack to this. Sounds like modding the orchestral soundtrack into the PC version is just a matter of time but those of us on PS4 and eventually Switch will be left with fart trumpets forevs.

Yes, some of the quieter themes are actually kind of nice. But the sampling on the more bombastic themes is just awful. I have my fingers crossed for even a partial orchestral mod. I don't think every single track has been redone on that album but I hope the worst of them can be replaced.

Thing is, it isn't even the fact it's synthetic. It's just a bad track that isn't fit for purpose. It could be the orchestral version and it would still be bad.

Mind, the Orchestral version of DQXI's track is actually fine. But a parade march is NOT cool for a track you're going to be hearing for dozens of hours upon end, and its no good for exploration. It's rigid, driving, and overpowering.

I still don't personally like the battle tracks (boss theme is especially weak), but encounters are easy to moderate these days, and bosses are rare.

Replace or even eliminate the exploration track and this game is solid gold.
