A few months ago someone brought up the band Razor. I heard one song and put them on my list of bands to checkout...

Just stopping by to say they own and are all I've been listening to for like two weeks now.

Thanks metal thread.

New Irreversible Mechanism released the other day. They've gone to a more experimental route and it sounds great. Been listening to it nonstop. https://blood-music.bandcamp.com/album/immersion - highly recommend.

So I just blundered blindly into Amorphis' Tales From the Thousand Lakes, and discovered that this kind of thing is very much my poo poo. Where do I start listening to their other records?

There's good news and there's bad news. The bad news is that Amorphis only had two other albums in that style. The Karelian Isthmus leans a lot more in the death metal direction, while Elegy was a bridge to the prog albums that came to define their later style. The good news is that the three styles they've done—melodeath, prog butt rock, and death-vox AOR—are all good in their own right. The only album I'd outright say to avoid is Far from the Sun, which isn't offensively bad so much as it's teeth-clenchingly boring. (You can probably skip Am Universum as well. Everything it did, Tuonela did better, but it's a decent listen if you end up really liking that style.)

e: people have come and gone over the years, but one pretty neat thing is that as of last year, all of the founding members from 1990 are in the current incarnation of the band

Eclipse was probably better than Skyforger, but Silent Waters was kind of a retread. Agreed that The Beginning of Times and Circle are not essential listening.

Huh, for me it's probably the only one that actually works outside of context. It's been a hell of a long time since I've listened to that whole record though. Maybe I should remedy that.

Went to Helloween's Pumpkins United tour over the weekend. Incredible how all three vocalists still have it after like 30 years. Michael Kiske in particular sounds almost exactly how he did during his Keeper of the Seven Keys days. Had a Proustian reverie when they did I Want Out, so that was cool.
