JV nearly lost the title to Schumacher who was driving a car that was probably the 3rd or 4th best on the grid, depending on track. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8XAZK14xaw The first BAR wasn't actually a bad chassis, the Renault/Supertec engine just had bad vibration that shook the car to bits and that contributed to them falling behind in development. I suspect it also shook JV's brain a bit too much and that's where we are today.
