Just saw IDLES live and they’re so loving great. I haven’t had so much fun at a show in quite some time, and they’re super nice to talk to! Go out and see um if they’re in town, totally worth it.

The opener was Banbara and, having not heard them before, super impressed me. Great night overall.

new Joyce Manor is... spotty. They have a way with making particularly disappointing records (lately in late part due to weird production choices).

Maybe this is partly on me, since I think Never Hungover Again is basically perfect, who knows.

Anyway it's mostly good songs but it lacks much of an identity and is sonically all hosed up. The production choices on various songs are really strange and sterile, there's some weird like solid state guitar drones and kooky acoustic reverb stuff and kind of bland backing vocal mixes and all kinds of weird panning choices, I dunno what the hell was going on, especially since Kurt Ballou produced most of it. It seems really clumsy and insecure.

But most of the songs are pretty good (especially Up The Punx), but I wish Barry wanted to be in a punk band still, they're softening out which is fine in theory, but the songwriting starts to lose its punch when the resulting songs are less emotive (and produced to sound even more sterile).

These like acoustic ballads and "Silly Games"-type songs are pretty disappointing when you get a 20 min record every few years.

Still, when they're on, they're on, and I'm looking forward to seeing them in DC in a few weeks regardless.

I really like that they got weird for the second half. On the last couple, I'd start tuning out toward the end of the record because all the songs ended up sounding kind of the same.

Well got to see Alkaline Trio last night and they shredded. They pretty much stuck to big crowd pleasers which was fine BUT they played "she took him to the lake" and I wasn't honestly expecting to hear that and it made my night. Since I'd never seen them before I was a little surprised that they didn't do the cliche thing of coming back for an encore with acoustic instruments and playing "blue in the face" or one of their other acoustic songs, but they did close out with "Radio" which was about as perfect as I way to close as possible I think.

Would definitely see again but I dunno, I think the Showbox Sodo kind of sucks and I'd much rather have seen them at the Paramount or the Moore.

Hell yes, Thursdays tour hits my town next year. These things tend to sell out pretty quick yeah? Gotta find $100 or something by Friday then if I wanna do both dates. Which is frustrating as I have tickets to a hockey game on the War All the Time night that I don’t think I can get back fast enough from. Dilemmas!

Buddy of mine just dropped another album: Fun Abuse, a crack rocksteady band out of Redondo/Torrance.

Pretty good stuff and the mix is better this time because they mixed it on speakers instead of headphones.

I thought I'd long outgrown shreddy skate punk and then Hit the Switch released Entropic. Was also a fan of:

Pianos Become the Teeth - Wait For Love
Astpai - True Capacity
Tiny Moving Parts - Swell
Hopesfall - Arbiter

And it doesn't really fit in this thread, but Light This City's Terminal Bloom was pretty good as well.

The Armed - Only Love is my AOTY for sure. Those dudes loving kill and I love it so much. From 1:50 to the end of Witness is some of the best stuff ever put down on tape.

Palm Reader - Braille came out so early I keep forgetting it was this year and not last, but Palm Reader are underappreciated as hell and every track on this album is great.

Rolo Tomassi - Time Will Die And Love Will Bury It is also really really good, it's very much the logical next step after Grievances.

Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want disappointed some folks and I'm not into every track, but the good ones are so good, and honestly just Ocean Song alone would make me feel the need to include it.

Direct Hit - Crown Of Nothing features the best riff of the year. You probably know what you're in for with Direct Hit at this point.

The Wonder Years - Sister Cities is ok, too many slowed down ballads. Raining In Kyoto and the title track slap though.

Dance Gavin Dance - Artificial Selection is something I listened to a lot, too. Borderline for inclusion in this thread though? All I know is they're divisive as hell.

Also speaking of The Armed, they released a new video today:

I saw Drug Church the other day, and the singer seemed really arrogant. He tried to give props to the opening band but couldn't even be bothered to know their name or watch their set, and then commented on how one of the bands they were touring with was actually good.

nah the thing is, drug church vocalist is like extremely wry, their whole shtick prior to this album and even often on this album is like a strong sense of self-deprication and jitledness. the singer is a bit of a weirdo but he's a pretty reverant dude, I've seen on many smaller tours and also some of his other projects (end of a year) and anyway, I would find it supremely strange if he were being outwardly, aggressively arrogant. just is rly rly not their scene, to me.

almost all of the lyrics are about like despondency and growing up in bad poor suburbs and poo poo.

edit: not to invalidate your experience tho, maybe he was having a poo poo day or maybe now that ppl actually listen to them he's a oval office, who knows

Oh poo poo I forgot about Birds In Row - We Already Lost The World. Birds In Row are kind of goofy because they're dudes with pretty heavy French accents who sing in English that isn't always coherent (case in point the spoken-word "15-38"), but they put so much feeling into it that I don't really care. The songs are all pretty much the longest of any of their releases and sometimes that doesn't work out so great but overall it's still good angry yelling stuff.
