I never actually read any reviews of Stranger Things season 2 but me and my buddy hated it so much we abandoned it immediately after the slow motion 80's style 11 music video scene. The kids were super annoying compared to how they were in the first season and it just came off as super cheesy, was that like a deliberate thing to parody other types of 80's movies or something? It's like it went from Stephen King style tribute to Lost Boys parody

Sleepy Hollow going completely off a cliff after Season 1 just still feels so baffling because Season 1 just go so much right with its characters and writing and it really seemed the writing crew knew what they were doing. The cast were really fun too and they just ended up completely squandering them after Season 1.

A lot of shows do and I've never quite figured it out. I never liked Downton Abbey but I could tolerate it for social reasons during Season 1, but then S2+ happened and it's so loving bad, and no one else seemed to notice? It wasn't until I saw this that I felt, oh poo poo, thank goodness I am not insane in this very specific way:

Yeah, season two was pretty boring. I'm gonna watch season 3 since I think it's the last season, but I'm not gonna go out of my way or have a viewing party for it or anything. First season was amazing though.

Eeesh. Unless they move on to some sort of anthology type thing I can't see how much more story they have to tell.

I was fine with it, it fits a very narrow niche of 80s pop culture, the idea that you could run away to the big city and a gang of punks who live in a graffiti covered warehouse full of pinball machines and neon lights could help you realise who you truly were while moody synthwave plays in the background is something I’d have been in love with in 1984 when I was thirteen.

My problem with it was how it destroyed the pacing right at the end of the season. It had a lot of momentum and then.... bam, spend an episode in another city entirely.

My mom LOVES Downton Abbey, and every character went from being a scheming rear end in a top hat to being relatively nice after Season 1 ended. It was so bad. Like the whole point is supposed to be that all these people are petty jerks who are constantly scheming against each other. Season 2 on it's just nobility porn.

Pardon my French, but gently caress That Noise. There is a literally unconsumable amount of media available, today. I can't even bother with a show if it has a crappy first season (or even first few episodes). Start strong or get out.

I mean, with an episodic comedy show, you can usually just skip all the rough early bits once it gets going. Like, I love Always Sunny, but there's no real reason to watch anything from before Frank's intro episode; the show's just a ton weaker without DeVito.

e: also, Stranger Things was a show that really, really needed to be a one-off or anthology. People turned on that show hard in the time between s1 and s2, and I feel like s1 being the definitive end of that story would have probably kept people from thinking about it hard enough to turn on it.

I also liked the Sean Astin/Paul Reiser nerd teamup, and that they both turned out to be pretty solid dudes even though they were kind of telegraphed to be bad.

Brett Gelman was the sleaziest dude, even though he only helped them. When he gave his “you see Nancy, not everyone is like you and me speech” I got super uncomfortable.

Also he had the same model A-Team van as the lovely x-men team, but I guess it was just a coincidence.

The next season will be interesting because Jonathan’s actor got busted trying to bring a bunch of cocaine into the us and will likely never be allowed back into the country.

Prison Break did that thing where the studio execs obviously had meeting that said 'the viewers won't keep cheering on all the criminals who did crimes; let's rewrite their back stories so they all actually innocent. That's the only way those feeble-minded viewers can handle having empathy with someone who was in prison'

Talking about a show that should have been 2 seasons at BEST, and even then it fell off the rails really quick killing people from season 1.

If there's one person who makes it easy for me to agree with "separating art from the artist", it's Graham Linehan & Father Ted (and other shows). Though there were occasions like the "I used to be a man" B-plot in one episode of The IT Crowd that are worse in hindsight, and maybe only good at the time because I was younger and edgier.

P.S. None of Stranger Things is good, it's all nostalgia-driven drivel, which I say from the certainty of never having actually watched it :smug:

Like it had some good moments like Eleven and the cop's relationship and the Upside Down and more of bat kid (its been a while I forgot names) but it just felt like a retread and the Christmas lights alphabet was way creepier, more effective, and cheaper than the house wide child drawings map which felt overdone

It’s kind of the curse of TV that a lot of shows have really good premises that don’t work at all as an open-ended story. The idea of a meticulously planned out prison break is cool, but once they’re out of prison, the story is really done.

Downton Abbey started out with a sort of typical period drama plot, and I don’t think anyone anticipated how wildly successful it would be outside the typical PBS audience. I suspect that it was only meant to run until the main plotline (the inheritance of the house) was resolved, but that changed when it was so popular, so they just kind of turned it into a period soap opera.

I mean, this was a UK show with some US co-production. It didn't live and die on its PBS audience.

Season 2 absolutely ruined season 1 for me. Season 1 ended with the perfect amount of unanswered questions and still felt like a complete story. I think the worst thing was how it made it look like Eleven vanished without a trace and season 2 starts with her just hiding out in the cops house.

Glancing at Wikipedia it was a case of them finding traces of cocaine and him voluntarily withdrawing his request for entry into the US (which is different from being denied entry), so I'm guessing it'll be okay.

A friend of mine had a band. His manager booked them a bunch of venues in the US, but organised the tour under the wrong kind of visa. This was treated as the band trying to illegally enter the US, they got turned back, tour cancelled etc. My friend still isn’t allowed to enter the US, more than 20 years later. He works for an American guy with a huge amount of money and resources who assured him that making all this ancient history go away would be child’s play for his legal team. Wrong.
That’s just a for a visa mix up.

IMO Angry metal-douche was the only interesting character in S2. The guy who played him was so good. He was just completely under-utilized.

It felt like they went "Ok, 80's Spielberg/King-pastiche about kids, so we need that guy with the muscle-car and a metallica-shirt". And then called it a day.

The two best bits of S2 were a)Mike getting got by the mind flayer, and b) the Duffer brother's winding up Lucas' actor about the kiss

"Uhh, yeah, that was actually my first kiss, and it was kinda weird doing it in a room with like 20 people watching"
"Dude it's TV, a lot more people were watching"

It may seem like semantics but it's actually a huge difference between "denied entry and turned back" and "withdrew request for entry". The second one is technically you going "Oh wait never mind I don't actually want to go to the US anymore for some reason :downs: "and it doesn't get marked down as denied entry.

That's why if a border guard ever even slightly hints that "you are allowed to withdraw your request" you immediately take it and eat the cost of whatever the trip was for, because that's their way of being nice and hinting that if you keep trying you will be denied entry and then there'll be long term consequences. I've had friends run into work visa issues, voluntarily withdraw on the recommendation of the border officer, and come back with the correct paperwork a couple weeks later with no issue.
