all suggestions were cool and good, notably so that Colored Music album because it's a dead ringer for weird mid-80s A Certain Ratio, but like a happier bull market version of that, which supports my theory that the Japanese economic miracle had a profound effect on the entire post-punk ethos the picky picnic album is not at all what i was looking for, but it's weird and cool and i am better for having heard it e: in fact relistening now, ACR's "Lucinda" sounds a little TOO similar to that first Colored Music track quadrophrenic fucked around with this message at 07:18 on Sep 18, 2018 |

Looking for more stuff like 16 Horsepower and Wovenhand. Really haunting Christian music, ideally folk/country/acoustic but I'm really open to anything.

Can I get some mumble rock recommendations? Stuff like Blue Mountains by Diamond Rugs Gimme Some Salt by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Blue Boy by Mac DeMarco Laugh At Sex Not At Her by Strange Boys And alt-J and Modest Mouse are popular ones, too. Bonus points if it's female mumble singers instead of dudes.

So the first two minutes of "Vanishing Beauties" ( https://youtu.be/boXCtctwifY ) by Les Discrets has these fantastic electric pop bits and I wish to god the whole song was like that. It's a bit dark and morose but in a poppy way and I feel like there has to be something adjacent to synth pop and goth stuff that will scratch the same itch. Similar itch: remember Heartbeat by Justs Sirmais on Eurovision? https://youtu.be/l7P5D4CDRnA anything like that but less hammy?

Can somebody recommend me some new synthwave/retrowave (or something inspired by it) that does something different with the beat other than going duh-DSHHH, duh-DSHHH the whole time?

I really like the band Om, and want more of that but without the metal part. I love the religious elements and middle-eastern sound and droning, meditative music.

Probably Mother's Milk by the Chili Peppers, but I imagine you may already be familiar with it. I don't think much compares with Janes Addiction, except Porno for Pyros. Of all the late 80s early 90s alternative stuff, Perry Farrell was doing something pretty unique sounding.

Some good rock bands with low baritone or bass vocals? No metal preferably, ideally punk or grungey sounding. Uptempo anyway. And with a singer lower in pitch than, say, Scott Weiland who is a high baritone I think. Already familiar with Joy Division, but in that vein is fine too.

I have something of a strange request. Looking for music I otherwise might not come across based on an eclectic listing of bands I currently listen to regularly. Hoping that some resounding theme stands out that someone might be able to laser in on some new places to look. Clutch (okay I lied, starting with my favorite band, from here there's no significance) clipping. Death Grips (Ex Military / The Money Store era mostly) Church of the Cosmic Skull Merlin (The Wizard, something about that sax) Superorganism High On Fire (not crazy about their latest album) Mastodon (situationally) Aesop Rock Hail Mary Mallon TimeCop1983 Run The Jewels (soured on most of their stuff, sadly) Ghost Serj Tankian Deltron 3030 The Dead South Nero Crywank Carpenter Brut

Eh, we have close enough music tastes that I'm going to recommend my current favorite band from Bandcamp, The Black Queen. Specifically the Fever Daydream album. https://theblackqueen.bandcamp.com/album/fever-daydream-3 They're basically NIN if he went a different direction after Pretty Hate Machine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kj9-QKZVW54

Pretty big band so you might've known them already but eh. Adjacent to The Dead South, maybe Goddamn Gallows will do something for you? The Night Flight Orchestra is cheesy as fuhhuuuck, but you listed Ghost so you're probably not too worried about cheesiness. And as total gut feeling hail Mary I'll additionally toss in Whoopie Cat.

If you like Carpenter Brut, try Perturbator. Former black metal guitarist who started making cyberpunky synthwave stuff. Has done some stuff with Carpenter Brut. Also HEALTH. Especially the album DEATH MAGIC. For more old school sounding industrial (Skinny Puppy ish) try Statiqbloom. 3TEETH, especially their album EXECUTE.EXE. Industrial metal. More rap oriented, MF DOOM maybe. Definitely more light-hearted/tongue-in-cheek but in a similar vein to RTJ.

Despot is awesome, but has never released an album, so you have to kind of make your own from all the various bits and pieces that are out there oh, and Burnt by the Sun

Thanks all! Awesome looking recommendations, some of which are things I know and love, but a lot of new ground to explore too! Awesome, I had a really busy day yesterday so I'm still checking out The Black Queen, but these are on the list! Will look into them! I'm a huge fan of Dan the Automator, but haven't listened to all of those so I'll have to give them a look. My memory is that Dr. Octagon was a little too... uh, lets call it absurd for me too listen to regularly, but was definitely an experience. I've heard of Perturbator and MF DOOM but never got super deep into either, I'll definitely give them more of a chance and will try those others soon! Dance with the Dead is in the same category with Perturbator and MF DOOM in that I've listened to them some but not enough to break into them, so will give them more of a chance. Graveyard, are they still good? I saw them live a while ago but heard they broke up and then reformed? And haven't given them much of a listen since then but the newer stuff seemed different? (They were the opener at probably my favorite concert experience wise, it was Graveyard/Clutch/Mastodon at Red Rocks, but Brent decided to mumble his way through his set which I know some people don't mind but I found it a downer.) And yeah, no shame here. I'll check out TNFO soon! I've heard Whoopie Cat, and liked it, but it'll definitely go in the listen more closely category. I'll definitely do a follow up with thoughts (that's okay in this thread right?)

What I love about DwtD are their shamelessly catchy and memorable melodies, and how they utilise butt rock electric guitar riffs and solos to accompany the synths. Their new album from a few months ago is a bit more on the heavier OONTZ OONTZ side, but great anyways. Near Dark, which I linked to in my post, was what got me into them and is still my favourite release of theirs. As for Graveyard - I like the latest album, Peace, that came out this year. It's a definite step up from its kinda lacklustre predecessor, Innoocence & Decadence, which was a bit too soft imo. Peace takes a step or two back towards the rougher, fuzzier sound of their older stuff.

Anyone else listen to CAN or other krautrock bands? I recently got into it and was thinking of starting a thread however krautrock is such a broad genre and I'm mostly just enjoying the Motorik beat stuff. I would encourage a krautrock thread. There are broader ones with threads and it's popular among the kind of people who use internet music forums. The problem is nobody really plays it anymore.
