I remember reading about this a few years ago - a wildlife ranger was telling people not to leave them if they found a drunk keruru in the woods, instead the advice was to gather them up in a bucket or something similar and bring them to a vet. Apparently the drunkness lasts much longer it would in people because the birds aren't just drinking/eating alcohol, they have a crop full of fermenting fruit so they are basically little mobile breweries staggering around the woods at this time of year. Only cure is to cut off fruit supplies until production shuts down.

I was sitting on a park bench when some magpies landed nearby and started tossing around chunks of broken sidewalk-chalk. Eventually one of them picked up a big blue piece, landed on the bench about half a meter from me, and just stared at me for a couple minutes like it was expecting something. It dropped the chalk and flew away when I pulled my phone out of my pocket to get a pic. Then when I was leaving I saw some mule deer laying down on the other side of a chain-link fence, with some more magpies foraging on the ground next to them. As I walked closer the magpies started repeatedly jumping on backs of the deer and biting them right at the base of the tail. They kept it up until the deer ran away. What the gently caress magpies.
