I'm never sure if hummingbirds are birds that have adapted to be more like moths, or if hawk moths are insects that have adapted to be more like hummingbirds.

Likely the moth's and their behavior came first, of course. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/blog/featured-creature-hummingbird-hawk-moth/ Btw, the vid seems to be slowed down. It's difficult to see a hawk moth's wings when they fly (~90 Hz iirc)...when I was a kid my old man neighbor had a huge clump of petunias, which the hawk moths visited at sunset. He SWORE that they were humming birds, but his sight was probably lovely. Pretty sure hummingbirds are not petunia feeders normally.

Helicopter rotor blades are another thing commonly affected by it. I just can't remember the technical term off hand.

Rolling shutter, the sensor picks up the image one line at a time working top to bottom, the wings move so fast that by the time it's finished getting the previous line they've already moved and you get that effect.

Rolling shutter is actually an effect caused by shutter speed causing distortions as one point on the picture is sampled at a significantly different time from another. The the wagon wheel effect is an interaction of the frame rate of the camera matching the RPM of the rotating object. -Zydeco- has a new favorite as of 04:37 on Oct 19, 2018 |
