The point isn't that tech companies are bastions of non-racism, but that they're aren't more racist than average for corporations. OOCC is right that a lot of people in this thread like to blindly circlejerk about how everything tech is bad in every conceivable way, then when someone points out that's nonsense they screech like vampires exposed to sunlight, because they're just pulling poo poo out of nowhere and they know it.

Case in point:

To be fair, tech industry is known for a lot of dumb stuff, a lot of which is high impact and receives a lot of publicity, especially from certain media outlets. So it’s not surprising that your average low-information goon gets the wrong impression of the industry as a whole. And it gets exacerbated by circle jerk environments like this thread, which signal-boost the bad and ignores the good.

At the bottom of it though, I have come to believe that the negative sentiments are rooted in simple envy. Techies (especially in software) make a lot of money, have relatively cushy jobs and are treated well compared to the rest of the labor force. So it’s easy to hate them and use every opportunity to poo poo on them, no matter how nonsensical, even when facts disagree with the narrative.

IT HAPPENED!

Here's a story about tech startups.

I used to work at this poo poo show called HealthTap, WebMD meets Facebook sorta deal. It seemed cool at first because there were literally people whose lives they saved by helping detect some urgent medical problems. That's neat. But everything else about this place was godawful. Here's the most bizarre hosed up thing I ever experienced in startup world.

We had a team lead named Bob. Bob led the team in India. So he kept poo poo hours and, given how 80 hour in-office work weeks were mandatory, this was starting to take effect on his health. He's tried to quit 6 times, but his manager Tiger (real name) convinced him to stay somehow, "Bob, we're saving lives!", "Bob, next release is around the corner!", "We need you Bob - you can't leave!" Too true, Tiger, too true.

There came a time when Bob found a new romantic partner who took stock of Bob's work life and rightly proclaimed "What the gently caress?" and got him to quit over the weekend via an email to whole management team. Unfortunately Bob made a fatal mistake. He came in to return his laptop in person. Bad move, Bob. Can you guess what happened next?

So these fuckers, Tiger, Pastry and Sauron (the latter being nicknames for other higher ups) locked poor Bob into a room while in-house company lawyer escorts his SO out. Somehow all of this is done quietly enough that the rest of us don't notice. Then Sauron and team attempt to browbeat our poor Bob into staying. Later accounts indicate phrases like "We''ll chain you to this table if we have to" being thrown around, half-jokingly. Bob's gf wants none of this poo poo and calls the cops. Bob is rescued. I decide to look for another job.

All of this, btw, happened on 101 University Ave in Palo Alto, pretty much across from Stanford campus, one of the poshest areas of the Bay. Yup. If there is interest, I have more stories of Sauron et al.

I worked at this one tech company right out of college. The founder/CEO was this insane lady who was convinced that employees would always steal from her given the chance. Most things were bolted to the floor and all cabinets/cupboards/etc were locked at all times and you had to fill out a form to request access. They tracked how much coffee you drank and you received a warning if you drank too much (for “health reasons”).

There were a few positives. She was adamant about no one working more than 40 hours a week ever, for any reason. Of course this was because she didn’t want to pay people overtime, but still. Anyway, the way she enforced this? Well, she would be given printouts of timesheets every Friday evening and she would go over them during weekends and circle the names of employees who worked, say, 40.25 hours that week. Those people then received warnings. A few were even fired because of it.

That’s my crazy tech story!

If you do nothing to counteract the inherent racist inputs you’re receiving by virtue of being in an inherently racist state like America, then all you’re doing is continuing to prop up those racist structures.

Crying that you’re not a racist as you reinforce the feedback loop of racism is the most FYGM head in the sand possible response to this.

Different cultural and educational attainment differences across races can lead to disparities in outcome that can only be remedied at the source by providing equality of opportunity, or by lowering standards for certain races (such as disadvantaging asians because they outperform whites). No, though you are part of a heavily persecuted minority, you don't seem to truly understand tolerance. It's not supposed to be easy or make sense, but we need to accept people's beliefs just as importantly, and in the same way that you want people to accept your preferred gender. This does mean that you will need to accept people who hate you intrinsically, though you've done nothing wrong.

Why set the bar that high? I’d settle for “when presented with the reality that your product caused the genocide of the Rohingya/is contributing to the global rise in fascist terrorism/consumes as much annual energy as Denmark, your response is not to shrug your shoulders”

Maybe the whole anti intellectualism thing is creepy and the rising number of weird fake science and technology is bad movements are scary and watching people in real time declaring they don't need facts or data to know that some vague other MUST be the other political party when everything real says they aren't is creepy as heck.

Vaccine isn't bad, the world isn't flat, photoshops of people as lizard men is still racist even if it's a technology man, and technology employees and CEOs can have the same political views as you even if you hate them a lot.
