Edit: is it cheating if I make an outline now?

I once won NaNo by writing a 60k Supernatural fic that was basically a gay retelling of how Gabriel the archangel became the Trickster. I was a teenager and I knew no fear and I will die if I ever see that draft again.

Godspeed!

I'm a heavy planner so I pretty much know exactly what I want to write, but that's really biting me in the rear end since I get discourage almost instantly when the words on the page don't match what is in my head.

NaNo is great for breaking that habit, because you do not have time to rewrite things. Rewrite after the month is over, just get the words out now and keep going.

2796 words today, and I think I'm about tapped out for now. I've got a pretty good outline of where I want the novel to go, and that's already been hosed to hell by the words that appeared when I started writing, but at least in a good way. Chapter 1 ended much differently than I expected, but I like how it ended up ending. I'll figure out how to bring the plot elements online that I meant to in Chapter 1 in another chapter or two. Yay for the first day being strong!

I ended yesterday with a little over 1800. Not a huge first day, but it's above target and I'm feeling good about the story pacing so I'm happy with it. I'm hoping to garner a bigger buffer this weekend.

force yourself to write at least one sentence and then you can take a break. a lot of the times I do that because it's a trivial challenge but 99% of the time the one sentence is all I need to kickstart myself into writing more.

I know people say to just write and ignore how terrible what you put out is.

But how terrible are we talking about?

Do you just let every spelling, grammar and utterly incoherent sentence fly?

I self-edit as I write. I fix grammar/typos/etc as I go, and that's how I've written for years. What "ignore the terrible" means for me is to ignore that I've screwed up the pacing, or this scene shouldn't fit here, or what have you - I'm not allowed to rewrite ANYTHING or change dialogue or whatever until it's done.

It'll be as typo-free as I can make it, but that won't prevent it from being a lovely first draft that needs rewrites and cuts and so on.

e: Also I try not to reread any of it, except for what I need to get back into the flow. If character B is out of character in Scene 8, I'm not allowed to do anything about it until the thing is done.

Yes. Just write. Write and don't look back. Looking back is for December. Make words up, forget your theme, mix your verb tenses, drop characters halfway, nobody's judging you.
