The man who created the very show doesn't know what makes MST3K good?

You're on the right track - Debbie Harry invited the guy who was playing the song when what would become Rapper's Delight was first perform. The backstory's on wikipedia but it's silly to give her credit in that story instead of you know, the guys who started rapping.

Buster Scruggs is good so far but I'm surprised by the casting of James Franco, I thought we'd done away with him at this point. I like him as an actor, too bad he's a total shitbird.

Edit: I'll allow it under my rule of it being okay if they die gruesomely at the end

Exactly. One of his songs/videos is not just about this but he outright says it in the song.

Me, watching a movie where Jud Nelson compares his plight to poor people of color subjected to a racist exploitative capitalist society while listening to an album where a middle class white guy raps about torturing and murdering the women in his life: "Man, this is too real..."

Funny episode, but that's easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen besides the constant plagiarism and nauseating commercialism. HOWEVER... I do admire how they cast a kid with real disability (spinal bifida according to Wikipedia) and it actually had a decent ending - showing the aliens becoming citizens was kind of cute.

Also, I did a double-take when I saw that Alan Silvestri composed the score.

The actual movie is about forty minutes longer

I'm not talking about Mystery Science Theater, Shout Factory released Mac and Me on blu-ray. Just the movie Mac and Me, not people making fun of it.

edit: I just looked it up and sadly the scene where cops shoot a child in a wheelchair is not included.

Is there a book about the origins of hip-hop as a music genre? I don't really read non-fiction very much these days but I remember really liking stuff like Peter Guralnick's book about soul music and Preston Lauterbach's about the Chitlin' circuit.

Nah, "Rapture" by Blondie was the first song with rapping (which I would distinguish from an actual "rap song") that was a number-one hit on the singles charts, not the first rap song. As was mentioned above, "Rapper's Delight" predated it, as did others.
