As an extremely low-level player of Path of Exile, and as someone who just started playing it for the first time in a year today - the fact that within a few hours I'm a badass witch who can summon flaming skulls really fast while firing off bouncing fireball grenades? Like, this is satisfying. It's a good podcast game with fun explosions to watch.

Overwatch Porn posted:no adventure mode analog and gender-locked classes are what are preventing me from diving back in next season lol I'd dispute poe is a bad recommend even for 1-and-done playthrough. It's a difficult tone to hit when you recommend it because you can never know how hard or not someone wants to go in. And I'm not someone that's been big on zealotry since it's beta days: I only dived into it for real sometime last year. If you just want to see the story and play to the credits, the game really doesn't ask much of you. Bosses have their patterns, but the rest of the areas are all 'click-guys-move-forward.' Dying has no consequence, currency is a nonfactor. You never manually upgrade or choose skills per level up, and the upgrade tree is almost all passive points that slightly upgrade your hp/str/mag. But when/if you want to try to understand the systems, play post-game, start customizing and mix and matching skills then there's a whole sea of information that's there to explore and learn. Even for slightly more casual players, which I usually fall into depending on the week, it's worth returning to POE in new seasons because there are new skills, new league mechanics, carry-overs, etc. so you never have to play the same way twice.

I don't think PoE is a bad game, it's just not everyone's cup of tea. I'm only at Paragon 315 running GR ~50 in this D3 season and I'm having a great time.

MMOs are really good for that sort of thing, you can just get into a kind of flow state and focus on clearing out your quest log instead of frustrations with your job, relationships, or some goon’s really dumb opinions about video games.

Probably the most cathartic "gently caress patience I'm merking every last rear end in a top hat in this zip code" game I've ever played was a high-chaos, high-assault run as Emily in Dishonored 2.

What are good RPGs with good minigames? Stuff like Triple Triad in FFVIII and fishing in Breath of Fire IV. Both are pretty relaxing and have good rewards

Easy Diff posted:Did they ever fix DOOM so it doesn't take up 80 goddamn gigs with multiplayer data no one will ever use? I don't think so, but it's been a while since I played it. You could always play OG Doom at a cost of <1GB, though. I'm going to toss out that recommendation for War of Attrition again, because it's honestly more fun than any Doom megaWAD or TC I've played. It has two¹ modes, one where you play through the original Duke3d levels and carry over weapons, and one where you play through a randomly-ordered sampling of the best of user-made maps and pistol-start each map. The defining gimmick is that as you use each weapon it levels up, and as your weapons level up the enemies level up along with you. So at the start it plays like standard Duke3d, but at the end every enemy is a miniboss, your shrink ray fires tame black holes, your pipebombs launch hundreds of homing submunitions, the shotgun fires armour-piercing acid sprays and you can will a nuclear explosion into existence once per level. There isn't really an ending as such in random levels mode, once you've gone through enough levels it just takes you to a boss arena and then gives you a final score once you're done powerkicking its skull through the wall. ¹ ok, there's also the titular War of Attrition mode which handles more like first-person Crimsonland, but it's not as good.
