I'm not surprised by the Roko's Basilisk/$TSLA crossover since they're the same thing*.
AI/car will save the world. This will definitely, 100% happen because, uhhhhh, reasons, and anyone who disagrees is a dangerous idiot. You must love AI/car. You must devote your life's work and finances to causing AI/car to come into being. Those who do not will face eternal torture in a simulation/be crushed against a fire truck. *e: see also Star Citizen

Someone in the both green and amber thread posted a video last week, of 1/16th of a Tesla battery being transferred to a hot rod by some enthusiasts. Naturally the whole thing burned down right there on video. Flaming batteries flying off like bottle rockets, shooting giant fireballs up on the roof and on other cars in all directions, leaving the engine bay a smoldering heap of black ash and melted battery holes in the pavement. When the fire trucks arrived they appeared to immediately spray it with their hose and the fire went right out. Was that not water?
|
# ? Dec 3, 2018 18:18 |

No, there are specifically chemical fire extinguishers that use powder compounds for exactly that sort of fire. You don't put water on a lithium fire unless you want to level the block.

infernal machines posted:Well, if they were doused in water without exploding, I'd say not enough to matter. For lithium-ion batteries in an EV, the ideal NHTSA guideline is let the fucker burn and just contain the surrounding area. Which works for parking lots, it doesn't work as well with fires on roadways. So water in massive quantities is going to be the likely treatment. There are various things that are preferred but you're unlikely to them them have on hand in enough quantity for a full battery pack fire. For smaller batteries, foam extinguishers are better, but for a car fire that isn't at an airport you just won't have that much foam. Generally for lithium-ion batteries, the lithium salts used react less violently with water than metallic lithium would. And using water has the advantage of cooling the cells surrounding the fire which can reduce thermal runaway. The big issue with using water is that you need a lot of it. More than usual for a car fire which can present logistical issues. And you have to keep an eye on it. The fire can start back up again pretty quickly. One of the Tesla's that caught fire was thought to be put out at the scene and loaded onto a tow truck. Which the fire started again. And thought to be put out again. Where it reignited at the junkyard. So one of the ways they are handling this is looking at the car through thermal imaging to make sure the battery packs are cooled.
