Guess the whole plan of doing a slow staggered closing till 2020 didn't work out. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2018/09/12/profit-chain-will-close-dozens-campuses quote:The closures come just a few years after ECA acquired 38 campuses owned by Kaplan College, another for-profit operator. They’re the latest evidence of restructuring in a sector rocked by regulatory crackdowns, negative publicity and falling enrollment as the economy continues to improve. That was only September when they said that.

rndmnmbr posted:Everyone is wondering where Tumblr users will migrate to en masse and re-establish their community and I'm sitting here going "lol, that's not how this poo poo works, people." I've lived through it time and again, watching a website and it's community die. When communities like this die, they're gone. A few will wash up on the shores of other sites, a handful will stay in contact with each other, but Tumblr was a time as well as a place, and that time is over, it's zeitgeist now dissipating. In time someone will found another site that becomes a thriving community, and a lot (but not all) Tumblr users will reappear there, and the cycle will continue. But it's over, best just to remember what it was and dream of better days. That's true but the super weird thing is when you find people again randomly later on completely different sites.

Doggles posted:Virginia College lost their accreditation overnight. This isn't quite accurate. Accreditation isn't lost overnight and Virginia College wasn't accredited (their nonsensical statement of being "fully accredited" notwithstanding as you are either accredited or not); they were in a provisional status (for a votech national accrediting body ie basically garbage) and they failed to meet the standards required and were denied accreditation. They appealed this and were denied. The initial denial happened back in May. They were accredited by ACICS prior which lost ED recognition in 2015 (which DeVos is trying to undo). Not a single aspect of this happened overnight. Very lovely for the students though of course. Black August posted:Watching the coming collapse of for-profit college is gonna be some wild poo poo For profit isn't going anywhere. Under Obama it looked like the super shady for profits that relied on junk accreditation bodies (like the ACICS) were hosed, but actual regionally accredited for profit institutions are fine. The market for it is highly competitive so not all aspects are as profitable as they once were but you'll only see for profit institutions gain more marketshare especially in the non-traditional student space. With the current ED most of the diploma mills will be fine too.

RE: Potential Tumblr replacements, obviously what should happen is that Lowtax offers them their own subforum to migrate to. He gets like a million bucks, the Tumblr users get their own place to post their porn and weird stuff in, and the mockthreads won't even have to go all that far anymore for new content, it's a win-win situation!
